I can understand being exhausted.....mom of 3 boys....and I can understand cat napping on the couch while they watched cartoons.....I don't understand going to bed and leaving a 5 yr. old alone in the other room for 2 or more hours. But, seems like to many, that is perfectly fine and wouldn't have made a lick of difference. She could have been bathing or showering for 2 or more hours, changing the baby for 2 or more hours, in the kitchen doing whatever for 2 or more hours....a 5 yr. old puts on coat and boots and leaves the house. Could have been in an accident within minutes. So.....I think.....what if mom was aware of where her 5 yr. old was? If awake or paying attention, would she notice him putting on coat and boots and hear the door being opened? Was this something that was normal for this little boy? Taking off without telling mommy? Maybe it was....he basically was on his own at times? I think I would be described by lots of people of being a helicopter parent.....maybe that's why I don't "get it".

During WWII my mother got word that her husband was wounded in France-they were sending him home on the Queen Mary to New York for R&R-she left her 4 year old child Butch with her sister in Pennsylvania. While visiting in the hospital with her husband they were writing Butch a letter-my mom got an awkward feeling and told him 'oh let's not finish it now' An hour later they got a phone call-Butch had fallen into the Ohio River. They had to take a 20 hour train ride from NY to PA only to find out that Butch had drowned. My mother's sister could not face her for a year. Finally my mom called her sister to meet for lunch-with good news-that she was expecting a child again and that sister was not ever to blame for tragedy. My mother had a miscarriage at that lunch meeting.
Tragedy happens in life. My mother went on to have 7 more natural children and adopted 2-I am one of them.

And she adopted me because my own mother-her younger sister- was murdered in NY-and our dad died a month later-leaving 5 children-we were parceled out-my mother actually took 2 of us-I was the last picked-being the baby-18 months-who wants to deal with that ha ha. Life hands out good, bad, and in-between.

People seemed to be a lot tougher back then. They just dealt with it and the neighborhood kept everyone straight.

That said-I don't believe that this beautiful smart boy was in any way neglected, unloved or forsaken. He was the picture of health and I grieve for his family.

After some googling I came across at least 2 cases where the bodies of adult men were disposed of in septic tanks. So apparently there are septic tanks that have sizeable accessible manholes (I hate that word).

It was stated earlier he may have been playing with another child? Was that verified? I could easily see how two little boys could stumble upon this and one get hurt and the other be too afraid to say something.

Regardless of what led up to this, all I have is prayers for this family.
*Snipped for space* I don't know exactly where the idea of two boys came from, but when I was watching Nancy Grace...she made it sound like Barway Collins and Noah went missing together when first mentioning their cases. It even threw me for a minute.

You have quite a sad and yet hopeful story. I am sorry about your parents. The woman who became your mother sounds like she is full of wisdom, strength, and plenty of love to go around. She must have taught you some valuable life lessons along the way. And by the way...they always save the best for last. ;)

I agree, he looked healthy and happy and loved. And for that I am grateful that it seemed he had a good, albeit short life. He doesn't look like he was neglected as far as that goes. But I do think it was negligent to leave him unattended while she slept. But the same could be said for my mom. She did tons of things that I believe fall under the negligent child care umbrella, and I'm still here and we have a great relationship. But never ever would I emulate her parenting techniques, it's a small wonder I'm alive! Cases like this are especially tough because no parent is perfect, no parent knows all or what is best and what works for one family doesn't work for another. at this point, the best we can hope for is it is the horrible accident it appears to have been and it can prevent other children from the same fate, not that that's really any consolation.

Imo, if such a small child could get into a septic system...someone was at least negligent. The installer, the landlord, the caretaker, someone. Yes, accidents happen, but this never has to happen. Jmo

Several people here have mentioned Pokemon cards. What's the connection here? Do the investigators believe he also had those when he left the house?

I have never been so grateful for Websleuths as I am tonight, when we can have a discussion around what might have happened that is not filled with hateful comments and rumors.

As for his mom sleeping - I am not a parent and can't say what I would have done. However, keep in mind that sleep deprivation is also dangerous. People who are chronically sleep deprived are at greater risk for accidents (including falling asleep behind the wheel), illness and bad decisions (ie, losing your temper with your kid over a minor issue). One mom falls asleep and the unsupervised kid has an accident, another one is exhausted and crashes the car. No great solution here.

I hope this turns out to be an accident. People can learn from accidents. The horror of someone intentionally killing a child is much harder to comprehend.

All we know for sure is that Noah's body was found in a septic tank. No word yet if accidental or otherwise. Septic tank on the property where family lives.

Your post at the beginning of the thread has haunted me since I read it. You posted that he was in water. You were right. When I came on this afternoon and saw that he had been found dead and where, all this made perfect sense in a way. I really appreciated your clueing me in as I didn't think about how kids love to play in the creek or throw stones in a fountain in the mall. You helped soften the news today. Thank you for your wisdom. Sincerely meant.

You are so right-my poor mother was an alcoholic and when her husband went into the hospital with cancer-she went crazy for respite-and it got her killed.
My Aunt/Adoptive mother was very stern and hard -but she instilled values that stuck. I am very grateful and I try to forgive all wrongs she or others in my life may have made.

I think your name Dogface would have been very popular back then lol. Like a pit pull with a kind heart. I was raised in a playpen with one.
