Police said the gunman was wearing a burgundy jacket and blue jeans. He may have been driving a black SUV.

Jones, who is a student at the university, was listed on the university's athletics website as a football player in 2018, but did not appear in any games.

In 2018, Jones was featured in a story for the Richmond Times-Dispatch with the headline, "Petersburg High graduate navigated a fractured path to graduation."

The article says that Jones, who grew up in the Essex Village and Mosby Court housing complexes in Richmond, saw his parents divorce at age 5 and did not see his father again until years later as a teenager.

"That was one of the most traumatic things that happened to me in my life. I didn't understand why he left. When I went to school, people didn't understand me," Jones told the newspaper then.

In high school, Jones had success in academics, earning ‘Student of the Year’ twice at Varina. He also earned honorable mention all-conference as a freshman and second-team accolades as a sophomore and junior. Jones was a member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, president of Key Club and president of Jobs for Virginia Grads Program.

A University of Virginia student is in custody who police say shot and killed three football players on the school’s campus in Charlottesville late Sunday night.

The players are identified as Devin Chandler, D’Sean Perry and Lavel Davis.

Two other people were hurt during the shooting. The suspect, is a U.Va. student.

''According to reports, Jones played football throughout high school. Prior to transferring to Petersburg High School, he spent three years at Varina High School. According to Newsweek, as a senior, he played linebacker and running back. Jones was also featured in a Richmond Times-Dispatch article in 2018 with the lead phrase, "A Petersburg High graduate navigated a fragmented path to graduation".

''Jones did well in school, according to his relatives, but he also got into fights, which resulted in suspensions. He claimed that mentors and family members pushed him to concentrate on his grades and control his anger. According to Jones, "If it wasn't for these people in my life, I would've been just another kid whose dad left him."

Wonder what's up with this rapper's rage toward UVA the same night? any connection?

This guy went viral on Vine years ago for his ridiculous videos. He's a "social media personality" and posts a lot of crazy things for attention.

One of the two injured players has been officially named. Not sure if he is the one in "critical" or "good" condition. Pray for both of these guys and their families!

Mike Hollins was shot twice and first surgery went well. Hopefully the other is fortunate to come through surgery or whatever is needed. The second originally named was not injured per his mother. It sounds like she has been getting messages all morning. I guess there is just a lot of confusion when something like this happens but what a horrible mistake to name the wrong person. Praying for all of them for sure.

Former Baton Rouge athlete injured in University of Virginia shooting, sources say

Hollins was injured after being shot twice and had gone through one surgery, which went well, according to his former coach Chad Mahaffey.

Mahaffey said Hollins’ mother is on her way to Virginia where he is expected to undergo another surgery.

Dontayvion Wicks, a former football player at Plaquemine High School, also now plays for UVA. Wicks’ mother posted on social media Monday morning that Wicks was NOT injured in the shooting incident.

In high school, Jones had success in academics, earning ‘Student of the Year’ twice at Varina. Jones was a member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, president of Key Club and president of Jobs for Virginia Grads Program.

These accomplishments suggest a person with life options beyond staring on the high school football team and playing on a college football team.

Then factor in that Jones evidently made only a brief, one season appearance football wise at Virginia State in 2018. Four years is a lifetime to young people and would seem to be plenty of time for football rivalries to wash "under the bridge".

These articles, however, show a slightly darker picture- but no red flags of a shooting rampage when combined with the aspects above:

Jones was evidently investigated for a hazing incident (dropped after the witness failed to cooperate) and one concealed weapon charge. Likewise, he was apparently administratively investigated following a comment he made about "owning a gun" (legal in Virginia, but perhaps not on campus).
