James and Iola Hipp were retired and had been traveling up the east coast, through Vermont, towing a camper with their car on vacation. They were both found deceased in their camper in a pull off in a wooded area at the base of Town Highway 46 and 47. Their vehicle was found on Route 2 next to some ledges south of a pull off. Both deaths were determined to be homicides that remain unsolved

If I read this correctly, the trailer and the tow vehicle were found in different locations. I understood at the time, apparently incorrectly, that the trailer and the bodies were found at a turn-out on Route 2 in East Montpelier. Do you know the current names of town highways 46 and 47 in Calais?

1969: Fear and violence


The murderer then drove the Hipps car and trailer to Adamant. On the way there, the car became temporarily stuck on the dirt road and the witnesses, highway workers, approached the killer with an offer to help. At that moment the murderer was able to spin free from the loose earth and continue on his way. Then, according to States Attorney Cheney, he unhitched the trailer and made his way back to the Route 2 rest area where the Hipps car was left partially concealed at the roadside.

During the week the car was abandoned at the Route 2 pull-off, the Oldsmobile was stripped of its wheels and tires, as well as the side mirrors that were installed for greater visibility while pulling a trailer. The man who stole the tires contacted the police as soon as the murder was reported. He said the car had been raised on a jack in an effort to allow someone to push it into a ditch and hide it from view. By the time the police found the car, the jack had been stolen, too.

In addition to the suspected killers description, the police also had two good fingerprints which were not those of the victims. States Attorney Cheney said that despite the fact that the trailer in which the bodies were found had been sitting in damp woods for more than a week, the prints could be used to link a suspect to the crime scene. Cheney also said, according to the TimesArgus, that while Mrs. Hipp, 62, was not raped, her body bore many unusual knife wounds which were most certainly administered after she was dead.

She was naked, and apparently there were some post mortem stab wounds, they didn't specify, but i wouldn't be surprised if she was stabbed in her genital reigon
