GUILTY VT - Melissa Jenkins, 33, St Johnsbury, 25 March 2012

I am thinking of Melissa's son Ty tonight. From what I remember, Melissa's family and Ty's father were stable, loving people and will raise Ty with love.

I am also thinking how smart Melissa was to let someone know why she was going out that night. That led to her toddler being found within hours and led LE right to her killers.

I expected I'd celebrate Allan Prue's conviction. I seemed like a guilty verdict was a slam dunk, but you never know....

The news from Ottawa today has tempered my reaction to the guilty verdict here. Especially parallels to this murder of a young single mother. Today a little boy in Hamilton, Ontario lost his single parent. His father, Nathan Cirillo, was the 24-year-old reservist killed at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. Cpl. Cirillo was raising his 5-year-old son. I hope that little boy will grow up in a safe, loving environment.

Two Canadian soldiers were run over in Quebec in Monday by an Isis supporter. One soldier, Patrice Vincent, died. He was a father of young children as well.

Allan Prue is a monster. It helps to know he won't be free to target and murder anyone else. His wife's day in court is coming!

I don't think it's going to do him any good!

Patricia Prue wants to plead guilty.

<snip>

Patricia Prue was expected to go to trial in March, but her desire to plead guilty has cast doubt on that schedule.

A Vermont woman who wants to plead guilty in the 2012 killing of a St. Johnsbury teacher will undergo a second mental health evaluation so a judge would be sure she is competent to make such a decision...

Prue's husband, Allen Prue, was found guilty last year of first-degree murder in the death of Melissa Jenkins and sentenced to life in prison. After initially pleading not guilty to aggravated murder, Patricia Prue said she wants to plead guilty so that she can resume written contact with him.

A detailed article from the local paper about taking the plea deal.

A change of plea hearing was quickly arranged and at 12:38 p.m. Judge Robert Bent accepted the deal in which Prue pleaded guilty to 1st degree murder in exchange for a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, guilty to conspiracy to commit murder in exchange for a sentence of 4-5 years and guilty to kidnapping in exchange for a sentence of life in prison.

Prue also waived her rights to an automatic appeal and a pre-sentencing investigation which would have delayed the sentencing for weeks. She also withdrew her claim of insanity and agreed to be formally sentenced today at 10:30 a.m.

Prue said little during the hearings but spoke clearly and deliberately when Bent asked why she was agreeing to the state's deal.

"Your honor, my answer to the question is that I would like to remain where I am, um, for the rest of my life," said Prue. "And that's why I'm doing it. Thank-you."

Part of Prue's motivation in taking the deal was also to be allowed to resume written contact with her husband and now convicted co-defendant, Allen Prue, 32. The contact is part of the plea deal but is contingent on Department of Corrections policies regarding inmate contact.

We don't have a lot of crime here in Vermont, but when we do, the cases seem to be heinous like this (ex. Brooke Bennett, Pat O'Hagan). :(

RIP Melissa
