It's been one year since Adre'anna disappeared
This weekend marks the grim one-year anniversary of Adre'anna Jackson's disappearance. The 10-year-old Lakewood girl disappeared on her way to school and her body was found five-months later, but her case has yet to be solved.
The roadside memorial where she was found is covered in dust, and the stuffed animals and mementos are all pretty worn. But Adre'anna's memory is still fresh on many people's minds.
"We certainly have been thinking about it, especially with the snow that came the other day. It kind of reminded us of that terrible night. We miss Adre'anna and the community misses her," said Scott Fennell, Adre'anna's old pastor.
Fennell and his Tillicum Baptist Church became the search base one year ago as folks fanned out in the snow looking for Adre'anna. She disappeared after heading to school, not knowing school was cancelled due to weather.
Search crews and volunteer scoured neighborhoods, while divers combed nearby American Lake and investigators chased after tips on suspicious persons of interest.
"We were told search every dumpster, every bush, every car. We did that until three in the morning. The officer that sent us out said 'I hope you don't find anything," said searcher David Anderson.
But no one found any sign of Adre'anna until last April, when two boys found her body in the bushes across the freeway overpass from her home. The autopsy failed to show how she died.
Lakewood police say they continue to vigorously investigate the case and are still checking out leads.
But there still haven't been any arrests made in the case, and that has some area parents on edge.
"We haven't had any arrests, no arrests in our community. I don't feel any safer than I did a year ago," said one parent, Brian Cook. "I still don't let my kids go to school unattended until I see them walk in the door everyday."
The kids and staff at Adre'anna's school are dealing with the anniversary of her disappearance privately with everyone still wondering 'what happened?'
Her parents still live but have moved the home where she disappeared. They say the memories there are just too painful.
A fun run in Adre'anna's memory will take place on February 10th at Fort Steilacoom Park.
