I am wondering if everyone is of one of two minds here:

-Suicide
OR
-A well-planned, target attack on Cheryl in particular

With the most recent releases by LE, is there anyone here who still believes that this could have random strike by an opportunistic druggie?
I'm just asking as it is hard to discuss the possibility of a targeted murder on here with out breaching the guidelines and so maybe the discussion is being skewed in the only direction we are permitted to take...

I'm probably a stubborn brat, but I still think that's possible. Idk though if I have on opinion on how likely it is. Like I can't say I believe it 90% or 50% or such. JMHO.

This would make sense if there was also animal hair ....

Yes it would. Even Ted Bundy pretended to have a broken arm and cast! Someone could have asked her for help in order to take her!

Wow! Seems such a crazy place to stalk a victim just before peak hour in a car park filled with cameras?!? So brazen. Did he looked possessed by drugs or in any other kind of desperation...?
Is it possible he was carrying the knife in protection against another?

ETA after thinking about this further: Is it possible to break into car by removing the rubber seals with a knife?

He did not look strung out on drugs but I knew as soon as he started to slow down and lock eyes with me and keep walking towards my car, he was no good. The possibility that he was carrying the box cutter for protection crossed my mind later but he was walking around the parking lot in circles with a hood on, grasping a large box cutter. After talking with my husband, my husband suggested maybe he circled again because my front windshield is not tinted but the rest of the windows are and maybe he circled back to see if I was alone in the car.

I work near the transit center and culvert. On my way home today, I needed to pull over to call my husband about dinner, I was near the transit center so I thought to park there. It was about 5pm or so. I parked in the lot (not the garage) kind of in the corner closest to the road. As I was talking to my husband on speaker phone I noticed a man walking in the parking lot. I didn't think anything of it until he circled around the parking lot a second time. I looked up and at first he was sort of power walking but then he started to slow down while locking eyes with. He was wearing a black and grey sweatshirt and jeans. He was wearing a hood which struck me as strange because it was sunny and warm out. But the most alarming part was that he was carrying a rather large and obvious box cutter. It was a thicker kind of box cutter all silver and he had his whole hand wrapped around it. I immediately hung up the phone, locked my doors and started the car. I backed out and exited the park and ride while dialing 911. As soon as i mentioned the transit center I was transferred to someone else and they immediately sent LE out. I gave all of my information. This is real. This happened. It was busy. It was daylight. Keep your eyes open and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement to not only help them with this case but to keep you and others safe.
Oh my goodness! I'm so glad you're safe! It was very wise of you to call 911! Great job trusting your gut!

Doesn't a cell phone that has been turned off still ping until the battery is completely drained?

I realize this wouldn't provide a trackable location, but I'm curious if it was tossed in a trash can, etc.

Do we know if Cheryl's family has tried to find the last location via find my iPhone or the Android equivalent?

if she is in a pipe under the road, or the culvert is beneath the roads level, how can you see into it from the road, which is also several feet away? from photos you cannot see into it..

As per photos in mrsgladysgravitz' post 489, thread 5, if you are driving eastbound on the street that Ts into Cedar Way, you can see the west side opening of the culvert where Cheryl was found.

Cheryl was found on the west end of the culvert, which isn't a pipe under the road, it is a very large concrete structure (with an opening estimated to be 6 feet high).

If she was put into the culvert at the east end, which is what is believed to have happened, and the water carried her to the other end of the culvert, then the current of the water would eventually carried her completely out of the culvert where it appears she could have been seen by vehicle traffic.

There is a handshake message sent when the phone is orderly-powered down. We've had that on prior cases. It is different than losing signal.
Interesting! Do you have a link about this? I believe you, I'm just genuinely curious and would like to know more!

It would be interesting to know if she had a Google account. If the location settings are on, it tracks everywhere you (your phone) go!

Hmmm.. I would hope LE took this VERY seriously!

Sorry I do not. It is part of the cell tower data. I don't know that every single phone does it , but most do.
It is probably part of the GSM spec (at least for GSM phones). However, if you take the battery out (on phones where you can access the battery) I believe it is not sent.

To believe it was a homicide you need to believe:

- the perp forced CD to send a text saying she'd left her card and would go by herself
- the perp forced her to park her car, not quite at the park and ride
- the perp forced her to cut her fingers with a razor blade and made her put the razor blade in her pocket
- the perp put animal blood in the car
- the perp turned her phone off, and then kept it to throw away later or keep with the wallet
- the perp made her walk 1.5 miles, (at gun point...) and no one saw them together or saw a gun
- the perp put a bag tied loosely on her head, and she didn't struggle, and made her get in the water and drown/asphyxiate herself
- the perp didn't rip her clothes, or leave any marks on her body

My laptop battery is about to die but I envision myself going through this point by point in the morning. IMO it is not necessary at all to believe all or possibly any of those things in order to believe it was a homicide.

Feel like organizing something? I have nothing better to do on a Saturday than dig around in ditches and bramble :)

Unfortunately I do have a bunch of things planned for the weekend. It is about 1hr drive for me each way.

However the weather this week would be good to search. The most likely place the phone is in the creek, somewhere. I don't know how deep or swift the creek is, but I bet it is cold. We hate searching in mud or water, very difficult to find things. Dive units typically don't do shallow bogs or creeks. I do have a waterproof metal detector head I use for streams etc. If anyone goes searching, BRING A BUDDY and stay safe (and out of the water).

One tool I commonly use for those kind of searches is a very bright flashlight (during the day), very effective for finding metal/manmade objects.

I'd suggest looking at the west side of the creek, in the creek and edge of the road from 236th down south to the culvert. I wouldn't spend too much time near the culvert itself because I assume LE/SAR have been all over it.

When we do a grid search, if I have spare time I will do a very quick search further afield than the grid, been lucky a few times. Once we found a gun in about 10 seconds just following the path the perp took (after spending 2 hours searching with the police K9 thought the gun was....)

ETA: I meant to quote ANZAC's points listed above, what he feels would have to be true for this to be a homicide.

What about the perp forcing her into another vehicle rather than compelling her to walk to the culvert? And I don't think anyone would have had to force her to send the text; I think the text was genuine and in fact she did leave her badg at home.

I am not sure whether I think it's homicide or suicide. But if homicide, I imagine her sitting in her car, texting her carpool buddy, getting ready to head back to pick up her badge, then being interrupted by the perp before she could get moving.

But it always seemed unlikely that, in this scenario, she wouldn't have honked her horn and/or just sped away if someone was trying to intercept her. This is on top of a perp happening to spot her in that brief vulnerable window of time. And what would be the motive? Robbery? If so, IMO Cheryl would still be alive.

So my other thought was that she had started to head to the shortcut path before she realized her badge was missing, then stopped out in the open to text. But if she was accosted then, there would have been a huge chance of witnesses. So - possible but risky.

I keep saying it but I still think that each and every scenario anyone has suggested has at least one very unlikely element. This includes homicide and suicide scenarios.

Why couldn't Cheryl send the texts about the badge?
Why wouldn't she park where she parked, given that she was known to park there in the past and her husband had no difficulty locating her car?
Why couldn't the perp cut her fingers?
Why assume a perp has no car?
Why assume the bag was loosely tied on her head, especially given that it was still attached when she was found?
