Maybe a brave soul on the police force can try to recreate the suicide by loose plastic bag/falling face first into the water scenario. (With backup to rescue him/her of course)
Not sure if you were joking, but even if they actually did try to recreate this it wouldn't work because the person would have to have the incredible will to actually die, and I don't think a police/researcher could muster that from nowhere.

He is a link to a possible walking route from the location of Cheryl's car to the culvert. ... it therefore it avoids major arterials and intersections - as a result there are no traffic cams visible and few commercial properties en route...
ETA: Who knows what time of day google collected these images but I am stuck by the lack of traffic, both vehicle and pedestrian.
See how far back the houses generally are from the road? If they have security cameras facing toward the street I feel like there would be several problems with this regarding Cheryl walking that route:
1. It wasn't completely light outside.
2. It was overcast.
3. Too great of a distance for a camera to pick up good info on anything.
4. Security cameras are gaining popularity, but still, not everyone has one. (we have a LOT of package thiefs in King County/Snohomish/Kitsap so most people I know of aim their cameras at their porches and driveways.)

Look at this lady!
Who would hate her?
Seriously Its just a photo of her but I cant see anyone hating her.
Someone who wanted something she had. They wouldn't even have to hate her.

(regarding belongings) My wording was very confusing. I remember reading that and thinking it could confuse someone.
Stryker: What did your mom put her credit cards into? Did she carry a tote bag to work, and if so is that missing? I know so many people who commute into the city (myself included) and I kept a ton of stuff in my messenger bag. With being a System's Analyst - especially a laptop in case I was on-call and someone needed something that required remoting in immediately. So, I was curious about a messenger bag or tote bag - she had to keep her phone/glasses/keys in something?

It would help us to know in case any of us go out looking for evidence using Anzac's guidelines.

Finding the phone and wallet along a secluded (creek) route to the culvert would tend to support suicide IMO.
In fact, the phone being turned off (a murderer wouldn't go to the trouble of turning it off, they'd just throw it away) does support suicide because it is a very deliberate act to obscure her trail, and right after the text too IIRC.
Just wanted to mention that if the cell phone was thrown away into water it would have turned off pretty much immediately. (Unless she had it in a waterproof case.)

Feel like organizing something? I have nothing better to do on a Saturday than dig around in ditches and bramble :)
Don't forget that tomorrow is the Washington State caucus!!! Voting is cool. All the cool kids are doing it! :) I would, however, love to try and join in an effort another day if I can!

You can't see into the east side ditch/culvert from the road.

Sorry if I am repeating any posts. My errands today just took me past the culvert for the first time since Cheryl passed. There are still many lovely floral tributes.

I came east on 244th down to Cedar and was surprised to see how clearly you can see into the WEST side of the culvert. The hill leading down to Cedar is steepish and offered much more of a view than I realized. You definitely cannot see the east side from the road, though.

Is there an exact time when the phone was "powered down" -- or timing between the last text sent & the phone being turned off?

Is there an exact time when the phone was "powered down" -- or timing between the last text sent & the phone being turned off?

Last text was at 7:02, and then phone was powered down.

"At 7:02 a.m. a text was sent from Cheryl DeBoer’s phone to a carpool friend saying she forgot her identification badge needed for her job at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

“Just go without me,” the text said. “I’ll probably ride home with you.”
Her friend wrote back asking how long it would take and saying that she would wait.
The text back to the friend estimated that DeBoer’s trip back home would take 10 minutes.

Her friend waited until nearly 7:30 a.m. and tried sending her a message and calling her at that time. It appeared to her that DeBoer’s phone had been turned off.

Detectives learned that the phone was “powered down” shortly after DeBoer’s last text."

I am wondering if everyone is of one of two minds here:

-Suicide
OR
-A well-planned, targeted attack on Cheryl in particular

With the most recent releases by LE, is there anyone here who still believes that this could have random strike by an opportunistic druggie?
I'm just asking as it is hard to discuss the possibility of a targeted murder on here with out breaching the guidelines and so maybe the discussion is being skewed in the only direction we are permitted to take...

I don't think a random drug user is responsible for Cheryl's death in part because her car was locked.

I lean towards the latter, but as you said, it's so difficult to explore those avenues and yet stay within the guidelines of this site.

BBM - I could not agree more.

Thank you... I think I was just wondering what "shortly" means. If it is possible for them to know exactly when it was turned off or just an estimate... Immediately after sending vs minutes later?

They would know precisely when it was powered down. I don't know why they wouldn't just say what time it was powered down, though.

I had assumed that it was right away - to explain the reason she did not follow up regarding the carpool waiting 10 minutes or leaving without her, but perhaps it was a couple of minutes later.

If this was a suicide, I understand that shame is a reason to hide the actual suicide, but why the blood in the car? What is the reason to make it appear as a murder?

From that article:

"There was also a large amount of blood on the car floor which has been determined to be animal blood."

Perhaps she witnessed an injured animal and put the animal in her vehicle. Perhaps she spoke with someone who was responsible for the animal injury. Perhaps that person offered to take her and the animal to the vet. That would explain both the blood, the locked car, and missing Cheryl, but it doesn't explain why she didn't connect with her carpool friend to say that plans had changed.

I wonder if anyone is missing a pet.

Did Cheryl work with animal blood where she worked? I wonder if there was a preservative in the animal blood.

This would make sense if there was also animal hair ....

My sister worked at Fres Hutch a million years ago and they did animal testing then, and I imagine they still do. But as an IT professional, Cheryl would most likely not have had contact with this area.

I work near the transit center and culvert. On my way home today, I needed to pull over to call my husband about dinner, I was near the transit center so I thought to park there. It was about 5pm or so. I parked in the lot (not the garage) kind of in the corner closest to the road. As I was talking to my husband on speaker phone I noticed a man walking in the parking lot. I didn't think anything of it until he circled around the parking lot a second time. I looked up and at first he was sort of power walking but then he started to slow down while locking eyes with. He was wearing a black and grey sweatshirt and jeans. He was wearing a hood which struck me as strange because it was sunny and warm out. But the most alarming part was that he was carrying a rather large and obvious box cutter. It was a thicker kind of box cutter all silver and he had his whole hand wrapped around it. I immediately hung up the phone, locked my doors and started the car. I backed out and exited the park and ride while dialing 911. As soon as i mentioned the transit center I was transferred to someone else and they immediately sent LE out. I gave all of my information. This is real. This happened. It was busy. It was daylight. Keep your eyes open and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement to not only help them with this case but to keep you and others safe.

Welcome!!!

That sounds very frightening. Were they able to find the guy?

I am not sure. I gave all of my details and was hoping someone would call back with some kind of information

Yikes! How frightening. Someone walking around wielding a box cutter in a transit parking lot? Stay safe!

From Seattle Times:

“The emotional strings that are being pulled are creating a constant need for information,” Police Chief Greg Wilson said. “They [community members] automatically consider it’s an act of homicidal violence, but what we have to do is look at this without emotions. … We have to look at just the facts themselves.” He said investigators have no evidence to suggest DeBoer died of homicidal violence. They are asking for patience as they continue to investigate her manner of death, he said.
Forensic experts at the Everett Police Department are examining DeBoer’s computer records, Wilson said, going through her history to see if she researched methods of suicide, among other things, for instance.
Considering DeBoer’s pattern of behavior, which was to charge her cellphone every night, investigators believe the phone did not run out of battery and that she powered it off, he said. Investigators have found no evidence it was destroyed.

Wow! Seems such a crazy place to stalk a victim just before peak hour in a car park filled with cameras?!? So brazen. Did he looked possessed by drugs or in any other kind of desperation...?
Is it possible he was carrying the knife in protection against another?

ETA after thinking about this further: Is it possible to break into car by removing the rubber seals with a knife?
