Investigators urge women to use caution

With no suspects in the murder of a Wenatchee High School senior, an investigator suggests that young women in the Wenatchee area take extra precautions to be safe.

“We don’t know enough in this investigation as to who this person is so we’re telling the public to use due care and caution, maybe a little more heightened than usual,” said Capt. Doug Jones of the Wenatchee Police Department.

“Knowing your surroundings and using basic safety skills are what would be prudent right now, especially for women because the victim was a woman.”

Jones suggested that women use escorts or go places with others.

“Don’t walk alone or in remote areas,” he said. ‘If you can go somewhere in pairs, that would be best.” - snipped

From boondock's article linked above:

The task force is asking anyone who might have seen someone walking out of Pitcher Canyon, down the Squilchuck Highway or along the southern portion of Methow Street between 5 and 8 p.m. Feb. 9 to call the RiverCom dispatch center at 663-9911.

Asked if this request means investigators think someone other than Cowell left the car there, Jones said “We have no firm indication either way.”

If no one walked out of the canyon, then whoever dropped off the car would have been picked up by someone in another vehicle, “which would mean multiple suspects,” he said. “It’s just one of the many possibilities that we are looking into.”

If you read between the lines, Capt Jones basically implied that Mackenzie did not walk away from her car there.

Yes, yes he does imply that. He basically leaves no option that she left the car on her own. He says either the suspect walked on these roads, or there are multiple suspects. Hmm...

Here's a map I just made for myself.

Point A is about where her car was found.

Point B is just a reference point on Methow St. The point itself really has no relevance and was pinpointed by Google on my search for the street itself.

You can see what looks like a "Y" where Squilchuck and Methow meet. According to the most recent article posted, LE is looking for witnesses who saw someone walking on either of these roadways.

I wonder if they have reason to believe the perp would have gone this way, if he did indeed walk? If so, what would that tell us about the perp if he was heading in that direction? If he left on foot, I'd say it means he lives fairly close. I'd also say it means LE thinks he lives in that particular direction.

Has it been noted how far the prints go? Hmm...

There's a lot of fear mongering going on in town right now. Lots of rumors about other missing girls, weird dudes roaming the streets, ect...

I can tell you that like Rider said there are a LOT of people in this town with drug problems (meth is BAD), alcoholics, and just plain crazy people. In any given day there is probably some weirdo scoping out chicks in public places and saying inappropriate things. Hey, you might get slapped 99 times, but that 100th time you might get lucky.

I think people are just following the herd instinct and right now the herd is about to rush off the cliff.

They must have something to go on if they are looking for someone on those specific streets. Don't cha think? :waitasec:
Would that mean the person was headed north?

Those 2 streets are the only way to get out of Squilchuck canyon unless he went further up Pitcher and cross country. Both streets run roughly parallel and head... umm I think roughly NE.

So I would think this request to the public basically confirms that he walked down the canyon as opposed to up.

I just want to thank all the locals for posting great detailed information about this area/community.

Indeed, and with an unsubstantiated rumor around town with a second missing person, gun and ammo sales have increased (as if stockpiling a small weapons cache will deter this type of criminal that gets in your head first).

It's absolutely crazy in town though, so many people now packing heat or pepper. All as there is a delegation of local volunteers in Vancouver trying to pitch the area to international investors at the Olympics.

I found the snippet below to be interesting. From today's article, Case now turns to lab work:

Cowell had been missing since last Tuesday when her red 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix was found abandoned near a driveway to a cattle gate in Pitcher Canyon in the Squilchuck area of Chelan County. A resident reported finding the car at 8 p.m. and told deputies the car had been there for the previous hour.

It's a bit confusing, even though it is interesting. If the resident reported 'finding' the car at 8 .... oh gees, 'reporting' these days. :shakehead:

I'm going to assume (and we all know we shouldn't) that the resident made the report (about 'finding' the abandoned car) at 8pm. And, that the person who reported it, had noticed the car there an hour earlier (at 7pm).

IF accurate, that would certainly narrow the timeline down a bit.

Very interesting, good catch Liz. At minimum you caught the local rag in confusing reporting, a serious crime against journalism :p

So, now they're saying the car was first noticed around 7:00pm by the resident. Changes the time line a little bit.

The neighbors in Crescent Bar first noticed the brodies in the yard on Saturday morning. Who's car made them? It couldn't have been Mac's car. Were they made when placing the body? It can't be a coincidence that nothing has happened on that property in months, and then these tires marks mysteriously appear the same day she is found.

If the brodies were made by the perp that Friday night/early Saturday morning, where was Mac from Tuesday until they found her body? From the looks of the pictures of the house, I don't know where he could have hidden a car from the eyes of the neighbors. If they saw the tire marks, they would have noticed a car there.

All along I thought that they went to the house right after the abduction, he hurt her, then drove her car back to Pitcher and dumped it. But this obviously makes no sense. Did he hurt her right away and leave her in the house? And then decided to go back and place her by the river to be found on Saturday?

Yeah, there are somethings coming to light which make this whole situation more interesting. Why did it take an hour for the resident to report a vehicle in the entry way to their cattle pasture?

Where was MC between school and discovery.

Couple of things that are unclear to me, sorry if they have already been asked and answered;

I think I read Mackenzie left the beauty school and was going to get a coffee. Was she expected to return? Meaning, was she just running to get a coffee on her 15 minute break?

There was a three day lapse between Mackenzie going missing and the discovery of her body. Have we considered that she may have been alive for a portion of that time and not killed Tuesday night?

From that same article I linked above:
Cowell was last seen about mid-afternoon Tuesday when she left the Academy of Hair Design, possibly to buy some coffee, officials have said. Peggy Strozyk, director of the academy, said this morning that she had not heard anyone there say that Cowell was heading out to buy coffee. She speculated that Cowell might have been heading back to the high school to practice with the school’s dance team, which she often did at that time.

My answer to your question would be that it has not been determined. And maybe it never will be, unless Mackenzie texted a friend about her intentions.

I think some of us have definitely considered it (although my personal opinion is that she was killed on Tuesday, shortly after she disappeared). Maybe once the autopsy results are released, we might have an official answer to that.

The fact her phone went offline at about 5:45 PM Tuesday night leads me to believe she was deceased about that time. If she wasn't, she was clearly in a captive state.
