'Light the way home': Barron County residents come together to support Jayme Closs
Emitting a soft glow, the homemade lanterns are inspired by one goal: Lighting the way home for Jayme Closs.

From there, the lanterns grew into a way to support the Closs family. Embossed with a green ribbon and the hash tag "#findJayme," they can be purchased for $20 and shipped anywhere in the United States for an additional $7. Brion's Smokehouse Deli in Cameron is helping to sell them.

And all profits go to the Closses. Though the money can't help Jayme right now, Salmonson said, it will when she comes home. "I think it’s really important just for people to feel like they’re doing something to help," MS said.

The lanterns are just one example of how residents of Barron County and beyond have come together in recent weeks. Green bracelets that say "Find Jayme Closs" are available for $5 in multiple locations, including the deli. A Facebook fundraiser for the family has received nearly $15,000.

Sterling Bank, which has locations in Barron, Rice Lake, Chetek and Luck, has also set up a fund for Jayme. The money is intended for Jayme's use. In the event she doesn't return, it will be donated to a nonprofit. Donations for that fund can be sent to the bank.

The days in the Jayme Closs investigation has turned into weeks. In an exclusive interview, Fox 9's Paul Blume asked Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald where the case currently stands.

He wasn’t there stealing shoes and backpacks and jeans,” said Fitzgerald. “He was stealing specific items that interested him. Not to outfit Jayme wherever she is.”

As cleaning crews descended on the Closs family home Tuesday, the question now remains - where does this search for Jayme go next?

The sheriff reports tips have now topped 2,000, but are slowing. Among the tips still under investigation include those regarding the two vehicles of interest.

"In fact, people that have owned red Dodge Challengers have called to say, ‘I own one. Come and interview me, so I can be cleared,'" he said. "We have license plate numbers on a list, so they’re not interviewed twice."

Former FBI official gives insight on Jayme Closs investigation
Loven has led many high-profile criminal cases during his 22 years with the bureau. He says the disappearance of Jayme Closs following the brutal murders of her parents is one of the most baffling ones yet.

Loven believes from the first moment police entered that home, a massive forensics investigation started within the house and online to trace the digital blueprints of the Closs family.

“Computers, laptop computers, cell phones, iPads, any electronic device - they want to grab all of those devices to do a complete and thorough analysis to see if they can put together a narrative to at least piece together whether or not there were communications between Jayme and someone else or the parents—just to find out what the communications were,” said Loven.

Loven believes investigators have a much more detailed picture of what happened to Jayme than they're letting on. He says there's a balance between keeping the public updated and protecting the integrity of the investigation.

Investigative Force in Closs Disappearance To Be Cut By Half, Sheriff Says
Within days the number of law enforcement in town - participating in ground operations like searches in and around the Closs home, cornfields and nearby land - swelled to 200. That included local deputies, the Wisconsin Department of Justice, FBI and ATF agents and other police agencies.

The investigative force will be cut in half going forward, from 200 to 100 as the journey to find Closs enters a new phase. The focus now is online communications and messaging apps.

News of the new investigative approach touched families on Halloween night, who supervised their kids out trick or treating, like MC of Cameron. "I was really looking forward to this, but it became a bit spooky considering what happened," she said.

MC's mom, KG, only allowed her daughter out after dark if she drove alongside her as Crain walked through town with friends to knock on doors. "I keep them close at hand anywhere they go now, they aren't allowed out of my sight," said Gronski.

Other parents in the town of Cameron simply refused to let their kids out for the night. The Barron County sheriff said extra patrols were out for the holiday, but the agency does that every year for safety's sake.

Barron Co. Parents Take Extra Precautions This Halloween After Jayme Closs Disappearance
“Parents are watching all kids, regardless if they’re their kids or not, so everybody is keeping a safe eye out,” said Chetek mother D.

The case remains unsolved, but things are slowly getting back to normal, even though residents must live their lives with a new set of worries.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald told WCCO-TV Wednesday that tips in the Closs case have slowed down.

Fitzgerald is expected to announce more details Thursday about the operations of the case, as they will be scaling back some.

Hunters asked to help find clues to Jayme Closs
The Barron County Sheriff's Department says they've had a drop in the number of tips coming in on the Jayme Closs case, and the number of officers working on the case has been reduced by nearly half.

Nonetheless, the Closs case continues to be the number-one investigation in Barron County, and hunters are being asked to help. "Just today we got a tip on a trail cam. That someone saw something suspicious on a trail cam. Because hunting season approaches us, and we're going to ask our hunters to be on the look out for anything suspicious, something that may be got dumped in a wooded area, somewhere across northwest Wisconsin," Sheriff Fitzgerald said.

Sheriff Fitzgerald says people who own cars similar to the vehicles of interest have called on their own behalf to be cleared. They're being added to a database that will help clear tips faster.

Search for Jayme Closs Enters New Phase
The search for a missing 13-year-old from Wisconsin is moving into a new phase Thursday, which includes scaling back the ground search. Authorities said that decision was made so investigators can focus their efforts on analyzing messaging apps and online communications.

According to the sheriff, the leads that remain center on the two vehicles of interest. The first vehicle is likely a red or orange 2008 to 2014 Dodge Challenger. The second vehicle is either a 2006 to 2010 Ford Edge or a 2004 to 2010 Acura MDX, both black.

The vehicles were seen by security cameras near the Closs home on the night of the incident.

Barron County Sheriff's Department

November 1, 2018

The Barron County Sheriff’s Department would like to thank all of our law enforcement agency partners who have assisted and continue to assist us in the mission to bring 13 year old Jayme Closs home. Each agency contributed an unbelievable amount of resources to this investigation, and we could not be more appreciative of the help from our local police and sheriff’s departments, the Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

I want to reassure the great residents of Barron County and everyone else across the nation who continue to support and follow this case that we have left no stone unturned. As of today, we have transitioned our Emergency Operations Center from a 24/7 reactive operation to a more deliberate and methodical effort to progress the investigation. This is based on a declining number of tips. However, we will continue to fully investigate those remaining tips and new information we receive going forward. This case remains our number one priority and we will have agents from both the FBI and DCI continuing to support our local investigators until we bring Jayme home.

To date we have received over 2100 tips and we follow up on every one of them and all of them have been contacted in some sort and follow up is being conducted. Again, just because the posture of our operations center has transitioned, does not mean the tips should stop. We still have a team on-call, to handle them as they come in. Please continue to call in your tips - there is a tip out there that will help us solve this case and bring Jayme home.

We built a great team of investigators to work this case and they spent the last 18 days, around-the-clock, going over information from social media platforms, phone records, family, friends, coworkers and every other kind of tip that has come in. They have worked with passion, determination and resilience to solve this case and bring Jayme home. I am so proud of each and every one of them. They were only able to do this due to the overwhelming support from the community with meals, tipsters and search volunteers that continue to keep our hope alive. We also want to thank the families of all of the law enforcement personnel assigned to this case, as most of these hard working individuals have been home very little, and that family support means the world to us and this case.

We will continue to actively work this challenging investigation, but again, I want to thank everyone across the county for all of the help so far, through your tips, messages of hope, support and prayers. However, none of us are done until we bring Jayme home.

Please continue to call in tips, again the Tip Line is
1-855-744-3879. We are here waiting to hear from you.

New electronics K9 team trained; worked on Jayme Closs case

The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has added an electronics-detecting canine, Kozak, to help assist regional Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force teams.

“When people think of police canines, they often don’t know the true range of tasks different dogs can accomplish,” said Attorney General Brad Schimel. “Kozak has already assisted agents in discovering evidence that might not have been found.”

Electronic detection canines are a useful tool in uncovering electronic devices as evidence in a variety of crimes, prominently when people try to conceal electronic devices containing child *advertiser censored*. The intensely trained canines are able to sniff for particular chemical compounds, including triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) and hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone (HPK), which are found in electronic devices. Kozak, like most electronic detection canines, is on a food-reward diet, which means he is only fed when he finds an electronic device. This requires him to either be trained or deployed on an operation every day, in order to stay fed and keep his skills up to snuff.

K9 Kozak and Special Agent Tami Pawlak, Kozak’s handler, completed a comprehensive training in August. Since then Pawlak and K9 Kozak have completed additional trainings and seven deployments, including the investigation into the disappearance of Jayme Closs.

Ground search for Jayme Closs scaled back
Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald says the search for Jayme remains his number one priority and authorities will continue to analyze new leads. But he says incoming tips have declined, so authorities are transitioning from a round-the-clock reactive operation to a more methodical investigative approach.

Authorities shift from 24/7 effort to 'methodical' effort to find Jayme Closs
Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said that the "declining number of tips" has prompted "us to shrink our operations" from a round-the-clock Emergency Operations Center to a "more deliberate and methodical effort to progress the investigation."

"Please continue to call in your tips. There is a tip out there that will help us solve this case and bring Jayme home."

Fitzgerald said he is convinced that "there is something out there" that can lead to find Jayme, given all the digital breadcrumbs in this world from smartphones, the internet and video surveillance.

"We're in this digital world, and we just can't get it," the sheriff said, adding that he and others in this effort to find Jayme start every day with that thought.

Operation scaled back in search for missing Wisconsin girl
The majority of the 2,100 tips received by the Barron County Sheriff's Department have been closed, the department said Wednesday.

"As of today, we have transitioned our Emergency Operations Center from a 24/7 reactive operation to a more deliberate and methodical effort to progress the investigation," the sheriff's office said in a statement Thursday. "This is based on a declining number of tips. However, we will continue to fully investigate those remaining tips and new information we receive going forward."
