Silver Alert issued in Bayfield County for missing Joyce Lenz, 81, White, Female, 5 ft 0 inches, 130 lbs., with Hazel eyes, and Gray or Partially Gray. She is missing on foot. Joyce was last seen wearing a denim jacket and black pants or possibly pink sweatshirt, wearing a tennis shoe on one foot and a slipper on the other foot.

Ron Lenz was working with his wife Joyce in the woodshed at their home in Drummond on the evening of May 24. He went inside for a drink of water, and when he came back out, his wife of almost 50 years was gone.

Joyce, who suffered from dementia, had wandered off before. She had always liked to go for walks near Owen Lake, where they live, but she never went too far and neighbors knew to keep an eye out for her and send word if she was out and about.

But this time was different. Within a half an hour of her wandering away, Ron had found no sign of her. Neighbors hadn’t seen her, either.

So Ron called police, kicking off a search involving hundreds of police, dogs, dive crews, drones, volunteers and other rescue crews — a search that continues to this day more than a month later.

The entire Lenz family – the six kids Ron and Joyce share, their 31 grandkids and 41 great-grandkids — are waiting for resolution.

Ron just wants to know what happened to the love of his life.

Ron and Joyce met in 1973 when Ron returned from service in Vietnam and was stationed at an Air Force base in Minnesota, working part-time at the base bowling alley.

“She had four kids at home and they all liked to bowl,” Ron recalled. “That’s how we got together. We would take the kids camping and bowling, and it went from there. It’s history.”

That chance meeting an instant attraction began a life traipsing all over Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin, with Ron working in construction, maintenance and other jobs. The constants in his life were Joyce and kids — they ended up with two of their own to add to the four Joyce had from a previous marriage, but they also spent almost all their spare time with other parents’ kids.

The Sawyer County Rescue Team was actually one of four search teams that came to Bayfield County on Oct. 9, as part of a combined training exercise, said Patricia Sanchez, head of the Sawyer County unit. She said the other three teams involved included the Wisconsin K-9 SOS Search and Rescue Team of Sun Prairie, the K-9 Emergency Response Team of Menasha and the Minnesota-Wisconsin K-9 Search and Rescue team.

“Besides the four K-9 teams, we were working with the Bayfield County Sheriff’s office and the Department of natural Resources, who provided us with watercraft,” Sanchez said. “We had multiple canines and multiple ground team members. When we finished with one section, we always put another canine in, just to make sure.”

Despite their efforts, this search ended, as have all the others, with no results.

The poor dear. I noticed in this article from May 2022 that she has been "found in cabins" when she went missing previously. Maybe there is one cabin or building or hut that hasn't been checked?

"Police say Lenz left her residence at 5:00 p.m. She has gone missing before and has been found in cabins.
