STEVENS POINT - A Plover detective became suspicious that the Krista Sypher missing person case could be a homicide case within days of her husband reporting her missing, according to testimony Thursday.

By March 27, police suspected the missing person case could be a homicide, Plover Police Detective-Sgt. Brian Noel said during testimony Thursday at the fourth day of Jason Sypher's trial. Police had learned through GPS data that Jason Sypher had taken odd routes through the Plover area the day his wife went missing, Noel said. Jason Sypher went to Menard's to buy industrial-sized garbage bags, and there were problems with some of his statements, such as where Krista Sypher went March 13 and where Jason Sypher said he went.

Noel stopped a garbage truck after they went to the Syphers' Hoffman Drive home. Noel asked the driver to bring the Syphers' next garbage pickup to the detective. The driver brought Noel three white garbage bags that Jason Sypher had left by the curb on the next garbage day after police visited the home March 22.
Noel showed the jury items from the garbage bags on Thursday. They contained sweatshirts and other clothing that appeared to have belonged to Krista Sypher. The pocket of one sweatshirt had $49 in it, Noel said. One of the bags also held three unopened bottles of wine.

Noel took a break from testimony Thursday afternoon when Kryshak asked to bring in an expert on cadaver dogs. Andy Falco Jimenez appeared from California by teleconference.
Jimenez has written several books on dogs, including one called "Dog Sniff Evidence," Kryshak said. Jimenez, a former police officer, said he didn't know for sure how many times he had testified as an expert witness because he did many before he realized his expertise would be in demand for trials, he said.

STEVENS POINT - It took a jury less than two hours to find Jason Sypher guilty of killing his wife, Krista, who went missing more than two years ago and has never been found.
Jason Sypher, 44, of Plover, decided not to take the stand Wednesday morning in his own defense. Instead, Wisconsin Assistant Attorney Annie Jay and defense attorney Gary Kryshak gave closing arguments.
The jury began deliberating just before noon Wednesday and announced they had a verdict shortly after 1:30 p.m. The courtroom, which had few observers during the eight-day trial, was full when Portage County Circuit Judge Thomas Eagon announced the jury's verdict. The jury found Jason Sypher guilty of first-degree intentional homicide in the death of his wife, Krista, 44. They also found him guilty of hiding Krista's corpse.

Jason Sypher faces a maximum of life in prison. Eagon will decide whether he will be eligible for parole and, if so, at what point in his sentence.
