He has to be a suspect then. No way can they access his phone without that. They must have way more than we know.

His parents may have done him in. ISPs and hosts (like Google, Facebook) accept subpoenas related to criminal investigations OR missing persons cases. So LE may now have access to all of his records because he is technically a missing person lol no criminal warrants needed

NPPD is drinking from a fire hose on this. I understand they are the lead agency, but they need help communicating IMO. I wish we'd hear from an FBI spokesperson. MOO not faulting NPPD, they are a very small dept, and need help.

What do we think they mean? iCloud? Google?

If you subpoena Google they can give you GPS records down to what room in a house a phone is located if the phone is logged into any Google service. It's insane.
It takes months for that info- recent cases we were told 18 months.

Petito, 22, last spoke to her mom over FaceTime around Aug. 25 while on a tour of national parks out west in a converted van with her beau, Brian Laundrie.
Gabby Petito's mom says texts might not be from her daughter
The mom, however, declined to provide the rest of the text from Aug. 30 (corrected). According to NBC, she sent a text to mom on Aug. 25th saying they were in the Tetons, and a snapchat to a friend on Aug. 27 saying they were heading to Yellowstone. For further context, a store owner said the couple was in her store in Victor, WY on Aug. 25 or 26. A couple said they saw the van at Jenny Lake in WY on Aug. 25. And Amanda Baker said she picked BL up in Coulter Bay hitchhiking. These areas are all fairly close together. Aug. 30th she was due to meet friend in Yellowstone.

I think that as a missing person, the police will be able to gain access to his phone via the telecomms provider.

In the same manner that they can gain access to Gabby's phone because she is a missing person.

(Don't you love it, this thread moves so fast that by the time I reply there are 5 exact same replies before this one. o_O )

I wonder if he knew that it was only a matter of time before they were granted permission to access the phones

FOX31 reached out to the Fairfield Inn and Suites after FOX13 in Salt Lake City confirmed that was where she was last seen. All the hotel staff could say was, “Unfortunately, we’re not allowed to comment”.

We also reached out to the FBI in Denver to independently confirm where Petito was last seen and are waiting to hear back.

The hotel is located down the street from the FBI Salt Lake City office, which is less than 700 feet away.

I wondered that too but could they get access to his phone if he was classified as endangered missing? I know there is a big grey line getting access to cell records

Yes they can get access if he has made a credible threat. But again- that too is largely up to the discretion of the provider. I’ve had to call providers as a dispatcher for somebody threatening suicide and they would say “we’ll see what we can do but I can’t make any guarantees”. Trust me: your location is totally safe with your cell provider. They are difficult to get information from.
