Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

[...]

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

[...]

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

Anyone who has seen Gabby or has any information on the case should contact the Suffolk County Police Department at 1-800-220-8477.

Mod Note:

We are starting to lose focus that this thread is about Gabby and the current search for Brian.

Mental Health: Only bring it into the discussion if it is a statement in media or LE reports. Do not expand beyond what has been provided to us regarding Gabby and/or Brian and mental Health.

Domestic Violence: Many posters here have stories. In our own personal ways, we all have stories. The challenge we have in these threads is the separation of our personal stories and the focus of the thread.

This thread is about Gabby's story.

As mods, we have hearts, we care about each of you, and it is hard to delete a post on thread that may include your personal story. However, we have to remind ourselves this is about Gabby's story. Please keep her the focus of the thread.

Have a great day everyone!

Now, a REALLY savvy lawyer would have had them go out in broad daylight and lay the BIGGEST wreath on the pile, kneel in prayer for a minute, then sadly return inside their home. That's the difference between Johnny Cochran and SB. Creativity and professionalism.

^—THIS, a MILLION times!!
The public is appalled, with many being absolutely furious, at the fact that CL and RL have shown absolutely ZERO empathy for the death of Gabby. They could still protect every legal right and silently show compassion for Gabby and her family. This will be on the jury’s mind, if Gabby’s case ever gets to trial. MOO

We are missing so many of the details. Some sleuthers claim channel 5 helo saw something like a body but turned away. If correct she was not too covered. Which makes me think he was not hiding the body but in panic and mental trauma ran from the scene as quickly as possible.
Yes, panic and run, not go hike for two days, hitchhike back for an alibi, then just run, anyway. I'm a broken record, I know, but killing her after his hike on the 29th and immediately running makes the most sense to me. I ask myself, what could possibly get them into a severe enough physical altercation for one to be killed? Well, we know they seemed to fight severely over control of her phone and van. There's police reports to show that. If he took off hiking for two days with her phone and van keys, imagine the argument that would ensue when he returned. It would basically be her Moab fears coming to fruition. Jmo.

I agree. Stan text would be explained too, as well as the phone being turned off. Could explain why NS can't talk about that text too.

When did he really leave? I know the parents backtracked and said September 13 - but if there are no sightings after the 6th at the campground - as others may have suggested - was that the day he took off? That's one week earlier than the 13th - however, lying to the FBI is a pretty big deal so is the new date because other evidence contrary has now surfaced? And I wonder about the alleged CCTV from the neighbor saying he was seen on the 17th?

Good exercise of logic.

I'm inclined to believe the date of the 13th. If he's gone with no sign of coming back, parents can't protect him anymore and would go back to self-preservation. "Mistaking" that date a second time wouldn't be a good plan.

This is from previous thread which closed just as I was about to post it.

But wouldn't you consider that as comparing apples to oranges? One family just lost their daughter, the other family has an adult son who may be involved with the death of someone. I don't think I've ever seen the family of an accused person giving media appearances reminiscing about what a wonderful person their kid is. Their mindset is in an entirely different place, wouldn't you say? Defense vs. offense, I suppose.

I've seen that, yes. I have seen families come out and defend their son who committed murder. That's rather common, in fact. The Laundries did a different kind of horrible thing. They ghosted the family of their future daughter-in-law who was literally living with them until their son killed her. Even if their son is somehow innocent and they are protecting him, there is no defense for how they treated the Petito family who was desperately searching for their daughter. They wouldn't even pick up the phone. That tells me they knew their son was guilty right off the bat. The excuse the lawyer gave - that you get accused of things in the US even if you don't do them - if you're a well-off young man in Florida? - no, that's hogwash.

I tend to think that it happened the evening of the 27th about the time RW&B drove by, and we saw the door furtively being closed. But you could be right. I really believe more campers have come forward to LE, to declare they did or did not see movement around the van, especially from the 27th through 29th. She would not have camped out on the river bed alone, IMO, so if she was there she would have been moving around the van area during the 28th and 29th. She was so pretty, she would have attracted attention, and she was outgoing and had confidence, she very well could have communicated with other campers driving by.

But I agree with you, by that time, if still alive, she had enough of him stealing her hard earned assets like her van and cell phone. Basically he was a parasite. IMO.

My first thought was just running away, not for alibi but just to get away from what he had done. After hiking on his own he realized he had no where to go so went back and got the van....and raced home. Probably the last text to Gabby's mother was to buy more time, and she was told not to discuss it because the ping on cell towers was on his way home. When he got home he did not try to hide the van. I think he told his parents, and they did not know what to do so they called lawyer. Lawyer told them dont talk to anyone. They might have not completely leveled with lawyer on what really happened.

Just not sure the lawyers advice was good. So much better to come clean, imo. Especially if Brian is now dead. But, maybe his parents are counting on his outdoor skills not to get himself killed.

OH...and I think she was killed right after they got to Spreading Creek on the evening of the 27th.

Ive even wondered if they got in a fight and she dropped him at the airport, then he hiked back to camp and killed her then.

Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County remains closed to the public according to county reps. Crews with the Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources are assessing the trails “and overall conditions to ensure safe public access.” @mysuncoast

Here’s the statement straight from county reps. The link to the park status’ in Sarasota County can be found here: scgov.net/government/par…

I was there earlier…main access road doesn’t have the do not enter sign up but the rest is closed off. All gates are shut past that.

And didn't they report him missing on Friday but didn't tell LE about the car in the Preserve until Saturday? I remember they weren't completely upfront when they first reported him missing. I think their attorney had to make a couple of statements during that time to correct information.
