Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

Again, i took that window to be a rough estimate, not at all precise. "3-4 weeks" is not "Aug 22-29" in my reading, but perhaps that will come. As for the unauthorized use, that doesn't prove whether or not she was dead at that point.

I think they believe they can prove she was dead before he used the cards, or else they wouldn't be able to convict him on the fraud. I think they have solid information that we don't know about that shows Gabby was already dead at the time he used the card(s).

I am sorry now that I brought it up (again), but I did it to point out the absurdity of some of the scenarios (which I am still reading every day). Point is, if BL pushed Gabby and she somehow fell and died (strangled by rocks? Coroner Blue said evidence of thumbs...) or he thought she was not dead (partly strangled - died later, of which I can find only the one case posted here - and that was a self strangulation in an elderly man, where the pressure of his thumbs was in entirely different place than would be the case with someone else doing the strangling)...one could still charge BL with something. Pushing someone down onto the ground, hard enough to incapacitate them, is a felony. Person dies later from those injuries, it's still murder (we don't need the felony. murder rule for that).

Several threads back, there was a truly robust discussion about ATM cards and banking regulations.

Apparently, it's not legal to use someone else's ATM card, period, full stop. Even with permission. So all of us who have occasionally given our card to a kid or a spouse are...breaking the federal law? Several lawyers weighed in and that's what I concluded.

Don't know about credit cards, but if BL used one on, say August 31, pretty sure it'll be hard to argue that Gabby gave him permission to do so. The best defense won't be timing, it will be proof of permission given (for the CC).

If BL used her iPhone and its wallet to use the ATM, that would require entering the debit card numbers into the phone (which many of us have already done) but then, it would not be okay for BL to use that phone to access an ATM. It will be hard for him to argue that any. purchases he made away from Spread Creek had Gabby's permission, especially if he had her phone - she couldn't give permission for use of the phone OR for use of her debit or credit cards.

I think LE knows a lot about those phones, btw.

For whatever reason, no one I know (except me) will drink water out of the faucet. Most people get the refillable 5 gallon containers. Our filtration system provider went out of business during COVID, so we buy in refillable 2 gallon containers (and keep some none refillable ones on hand for the people who won't drink the "sink water") It does taste a tiny bit like chlorine and it is slightly cloudy, but if you wait 3-4 minutes, it's fine. IMO.

But yeah, many many people won't drink water from the faucet, whether camping or not.

We still use water from the faucet for everything.....and have to buy a new coffee pot every 2 or so years, and have quit bothering with the dishwasher because everything is cloudy. I'm still alive. I doubt my demise will be the water. jmo

He's going to have to appear. Unless it is dismissed prior. Person making the claim must have some knowledge that the location of the posting was not his property. If this is the case it would appear only the city or town would have the right to remove it. MOO

No idea. All the photos of BL and Gabby I have seen, they are living in North Port at the condo near Taco Bell and Publix. The condo in Venice is drastically different from the one in North Port - there is no mistaking one for the other.

Arguably protestors didn't have a right to place on town/city property; and CL didn't have a right to remove and destroy another's property. Both may be found to be without rights technically. We'll see what the court does. If it's not dismissed out of hand, both will at least have to appear. MOO

Yeah...I reluctantly agree. I leave the legalities to the lawyers and LE, but from what little information we know, I do feel there is an open window of time where her TOD could have occurred. Even if we do believe the debit card use from the warrant is after her death, we don't know what time on the 30th he used them, nor where. And the FBI still is asking for witnesses from SC between Aug. 27-30th.

The coroner report doesn't narrow it down well, either.

I mean, personally, I can't with any certainty narrow the TOD window more than between afternoon (after 2pm) Aug. 27 through afternoon/eve (before 9pm) Aug. 30. If BL left Spread Creek at 9pm MST on Aug. 30th and basically drove straight through, it would put him in North Port around 10am EST on Sept. 1st. I don't think he left that late, but I have no proof he didn't and am willing to accept that.

Imo, we can argue all day about how obvious it is BL killed her on this day or that, but there really isn't anything irrefutable to narrow it specifically... that the public has been given, at least. Jmo.

Need lawyers to weigh in on this please. Aren't homicides occurring in the commission of other crime or attempted crimes such as rape arson robbery....considered 1st degree murder? Could the importance of the warrant for use of Gabby's cards after her death get tied to the commission of robbery of said cards?

I wonder if SB isn't negotiating a surrender because it would jeopardize his "other" clients - the parents. MOO. This is why each one of them should be receiving representation by independent counsel. This is a situation fraught with peril for this attorney IMOO.
