Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

[...]

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

[...]

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

Anyone who has seen Gabby or has any information on the case should contact the Suffolk County Police Department at 1-800-220-8477.

Mod Note:

We are starting to lose focus that this thread is about Gabby and the current search for Brian.

Mental Health: Only bring it into the discussion if it is a statement in media or LE reports. Do not expand beyond what has been provided to us regarding Gabby and/or Brian and mental Health.

Domestic Violence: Many posters here have stories. In our own personal ways, we all have stories. The challenge we have in these threads is the separation of our personal stories and the focus of the thread.

This thread is about Gabby's story.

As mods, we have hearts, we care about each of you, and it is hard to delete a post on thread that may include your personal story. However, we have to remind ourselves this is about Gabby's story. Please keep her the focus of the thread.

Have a great day everyone!

He did offer $200 to the couple that picked him hitchhiking. When they picked him, iirc, he asked where they were going and they said Jackson. I think he took that mean Jackson Hole and once he realized they were going Jackson he wanted OUT. I don't think he wanted to go anywhere near Jackson out of fear of being recognized from the Merry Piglets incident.

My speculation is that maybe he thought he could go to Jackson Hole and possibly catch a bus or another ride to where he could.

Once they let him out I think he realized his options were limited and he then returned to the van and drove home to Florida.

There can be no question that Brian's intent all along was to get back to the van. He was in Colter Bay and asked the couple if they were going to Jackson. He assumed they would take highway 191, which went right past the backroads leading to the van. Unfortunately for Brian the couple decided on the way to turn off onto a different route (Teton Park Road). When Brian eventually realized they were on the wrong road he asked to be let out immediately. (It was probably when Brian saw Jackson Lake and/or the Jackson Lake Dam that he realized they were on the wrong road. It probably had nothing to do with the actual conversation. They let him off at the Jackson Lake Dam.) He would have then had to hike back to highway 191 and follow it to get back to the roads leading to the van.

But perhaps he didn't know any of this. He demanded to be let out when it was clarified they were going to Jackson.
He demanded to be let out when he saw they were taking the other road that went away from where the van was parked. Perhaps he didn't want to alert his first ride of where he was actually trying to go, and planned to say they could just drop him at a location once he was near the site. He was more clear on his second hitch attempt. Or maybe he was panicked, originally wanting to flee without the van, but had second thoughts and hitched back to the van. Perhaps he was just looking to make imprints on witnesses that he could tell his story to about being away from his girlfriend for a length of time that, coincidentally, she just happened to be killed during.

Laundrie's dad stays silent as he installs cam after protesters bash on door
Brian Laundrie manhunt: Chris Laundrie installs apparent doorbell camera

The extra protection comes three days after Christopher and his wife Roberta Laundrie, 55, were visited by rowdy protesters who pounded the front door of the home of Brian Laundrie's parents while shouting "you guys like to strangle people" - and calling the family "dirty Laundries."

Christopher can be seen adjusting the white-colored camera device and then making his way along the driveway and recovering mail, according to Fox News.

Chris Laundrie is getting watched and filmed just for walking to his mailbox, note Gabby poster behind him.

Brian Laundrie: What happens if he isn't found in the coming weeks - CNN
[...]

CNN reached out to North Port police for more details on the search.

"We will not be providing daily updates and details on the search. If and when something of substance is found, we will be a part of that conversation at that time," Taylor said.

The FBI did not comment on CNN's questions about the search.

[...]

Those initial areas of focus would likely include the dry areas, as parts of the reserve tend to be swamp-like, according to Chris Boyer, executive director for the nonprofit National Association for Search and Rescue. Other areas of focus could include places that are away from hiking paths or trails, in case Laundrie wanted to evade authorities and avoid being found.

[...]

Boyer added that he believes if Laundrie was in the reserve authorities would have found him by now or would have found clues from him.

A big part of how investigators search and what areas they focus on usually has to do with the kinds of tips they're receiving. At this point in the investigation, many tips are still likely coming in, Belli said.

"I'm sure they're getting many, many tips. So continuing the search, it seems perfectly appropriate to me, even though it has been a while," he said. "In (2006) we had the murder of one of our police officers and there were over 6,500 tips in that particular case over the years, and a good 4,000 of those came in the very beginning months of that investigation."

[...]

"You look at this and you go back to the day that he actually was reported missing and you go, 'Okay, even if the guy was only walking at three miles an hour, and he only walked eight hours a day, that's 24 miles a day that he could go in any one direction, times X number of days,'" Boyer said. "He could have walked out of the state of Florida, probably. If he was in a car, driving at 35 or 40 or 60 miles an hour, he could be anywhere in the United States."

[...]

"As far as this being a cold case... it's a department by department definition, but across the board, typically people will accept three to five years with absolutely no new leads, no new evidence, no new nothing (until it goes cold), and that is so far from where we are," said Sheryl McCollum, director of the nonprofit Cold Case Investigative Research Institute. "That's not the case here at all."

The witness at the restaurant, Merry Piglets, said in her interview that she pointed out the confrontation between Brian, Gabby and the staff to her partner. I'm getting that he wasn't aware of what was going on. What I take from that is that it must not have been the screaming match that I had previously thought, based on prior discussions of the incident.

Or it could have been just angry talk at first but became a screaming match when he went back in four times to argue.

Apologies, haven't watched it yet, but I did see a few snippets in the article. Didn't she mean after the event, when she saw them on the news that she pointed out to her partner it was the couple they saw at the Merry Piglet? Again sorry for not watching it before asking!

For me, the fact that the woman who saw Brian and Gabby in Merry Piglets has an online presence/following loosens her credibility.

I wonder how many extra followers she's gained since going public with what she saw? The stories she posted about it were certainly very self-indulgent and melodramatic IMO.

Also, if she had to point out to her other half that they were arguing when this was supposedly going on at the table right next to them it can hardly have been an argument with raised voices, otherwise she wouldn't have needed to point it out.

Unless the tables in that restaurant are positioned 40ft apart perhaps.. ;)
