A bit more information from Ancestry. Her birth date is 25 May 1958 in Helena, Montana. Allen is her married name (she was born Kimberly Kay Novak). This comes from multiple family trees with her picture and a birth record confirming the birth details. The obvious question (especially given the reference to a custody issue) concerns her marriage and husband - but he is only named as Tom Allen in Ancestry with no further details or records.

The discrepancies could be a result of her lifestyle. Just like her family last saw her in 1986, but last spoke with her in Feb 1989, she could've kept in touch with her friends in a similar way. Maybe she spoke with one friend on the phone one year, gone out with a second friend the next year, and been seen from afar (but not approached) by a third friend the following year. Drug and alcohol use would also impair recollections if one or more of those friends were also users.
