Bakers' Caldwell County court hearings pushed back

Adam and Elisa Baker were scheduled to appear in Caldwell County court Monday on several charges unrelated to the death of Adam’s 10-year-old daughter, Zahra Baker. Neither case was heard Monday.

The charges Adam, 33, faced included simple worthless checks, communicating threats and failure to return rental property. Elisa, 43, was due in court on charges of worthless checks, communicating threats, failure to return rental property and traffic citations.

Although Adam has waited in attorney Shell Pearce’s office during past Caldwell County court dates, he didn’t this time, Pearce said, adding that Adam waited at home this time.

NEWTON, NC (WBTV) - The step-mother of Zahra Baker, who was killed sometime last year, was rescheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Superior Court Judge Timothy Kincaid will preside over Elisa Baker’s felony charges as they appear in the courtroom, according to an order that was filed in court this week.

Citing “unique characteristics, as well as national media attention,” Kincaid said it would be better if one judge presides over all of Baker’s cases, rather than judges who are on a rotation and must review the cases each time they preside over a hearing relating to the charges.

“The assignment of one judge to hear all matters concerning these cases would promote consistency and judicial efficiency,” the order reads.
