I must say, my first thought was hiding a pregnancy (be it from a teen relationship or from abuse, I kind of hope she will be examined for signs of both home abortion and having given birth), but it could also be a part of general child abuse (she had just finished middle school and it's probably easier to pull someone from school after that) or something like a mental illness on the parents part (but as I understand, both the mum and dad are there?).

From what I understand, there was nothing unusual about her prior to the hiding. But 27 years of brainwashing, intentional or not, would have heavily distorted her reality.
