Judge denies Casey Anthony's motions

Circuit Judge Stan Strickland didn't offer any explanation for denying a request by Casey Anthony that would have forced the Orange County Jail to destroy videos of the visits with her parents. The videos are subject to public record laws and can be scrutinized by the media and others.

The judge also denied a defense request to dismiss some check fraud charges against Anthony.

Casey Anthony case: Judge denies two of the five motions from Friday so far

Strickland denied the defense's request to dismiss any of the 13 counts of various fraud charges filed against Anthony.

The judge ruled that statement of Joe Jordon, who was a volunteer for Texas EquuSearch, which was recorded in October can't be released.

Strickland heard several motions on Friday. He's expected to rule soon on the remaining two issues, which include whether the state can pursue the death penalty and whether the jail can continue to record Anthony's visits with her attorneys.

On the Today Show Tuesday, the Anthonys said they hoped the motion would be granted.

Judge Strickland also refused to throw out charges in Casey's check fraud case.

Judge Stan Strickland signed three orders Wednesday, and it was not good news for the defense team, as two of their motions were denied.

Video of jail visits with Casey&#8217;s family will not be destroyed, and nine charges related to the check fraud case will not be thrown out.

We are still waiting for the judge to rule on the defense motion asking to take the death penalty off the table.

The prosecution stunned observers Friday with its graphic theory about how the child was murdered. WFTV-Channel 9 returned to Anthony&#8217;s reactions in a report yesterday on Judge Stan Strickland&#8217;s decision to deny several defense motions.

WFTV&#8217;s Kathi Belich observed that Anthony &#8220;seemed to cry&#8221; as the defense argued several motions, but when the prosecution offered its theory about the child&#8217;s death &#8220;Casey&#8217;s cold, steely expression changed only after words from defense attorney Jose Baez. Even then, still no tears were visible.&#8221;

Judge Stan Strickland denied another defense motion in the case against Casey Anthony Thursday. Judge Strickland said that Casey should not get special treatment in the jail.

The defense wanted the jail to stop videotaping Casey whenever she was meeting with her lawyers or with her family, but the jail videotapes every inmate in those situations so the judge denied the motion.

Judge Stan Strickland denied the defense's motion Thursday to prohibit Orange County Jail officials from videotaping visits between Casey Anthony and her legal team.

Strickland also considered delaying the release of any videotapes of the meetings until after the trial, but saw no need to do so and cited the trial's late start as delay enough.

The judge did stipulate that he must first approve of any videotaped interview before it is released to the public to guarantee that nothing compromises Anthony's fair trial.

A judge has denied Casey Anthony's defense team's request to prevent the Orange County Jail from recording Anthony's visits with lawyers.

Judge Stan Strickland issued his ruling Thursday afternoon. He acknowledged that the release of these videos could affect Anthony's right to a fair trial, however, so he will view any video of taped visits involving Anthony before they are released to the public.

"The court has witnessed at least one prior video, which could arguably affect the defendant's right to a fair trial, as well as jury selection," Strickland said in his ruling.

Casey Anthony case: Judge says jail can keep recording

Orange Circuit Court Judge Stan Strickland ruled Thursday on the defense's request to stop those recordings. He wrote in the two-page order that he can't force the jail to "cease and desist from videotaping Ms. Anthony's meeting with her attorneys."

However, he does have concerns about content of any videotape that might be released and has seen at least one that would impact Anthony's right to a fair trial, Strickland wrote.

It's unclear which video the judge is referring to in his motion. Several months ago, Strickland did stop the release of a video that showed Anthony's reaction when she learned about her daughter's remains.

The judge in Casey Anthony's murder case will allow the Orange County Jail to continue videotaping visits with her attorneys.

Anthony's lawyers filed a motion to prohibit the procedure, but Judge Stan Strickland said he'll allow their release, but not before he signs off on it.

In his ruling, the judge said any delay in the release of any recordings would be minimal, and the defendant's right to counsel and access to the courts would be protected.

Report: Death sentences on the decline

There were 106 death sentences imposed in 2009, the Death Penalty Information Center estimated in its annual report released Friday. That number is the smallest since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976 and compares with an annual average of 295 death sentences during the 1990s.
