I've been on a few juries and I can honestly say I've never seen this many jurors be excused, ever. This is surprising to me, to say the least.

remember though.....most trials dont last two to three months

Someone just said that KC rolled her eyes when the young mother was explaining about her five year old and how she would have to leave her with her husband and basically she does it better.

Does anyone know about that. I find it hard to be lieve that she would roll her eyes. Anyone?

I did not see that. I was looking directly at her and I did not see any change of expression on her face. She is beginning to look serious. Don't know if she is tired or trying to hold back yawns. jmo

My company pays people on jury duty... regular wage with no time restriction. I guess I was surprised to hear that so many employers out there do not pay their employees to be a GOOD CITIZEN. too bad I can't serve on a jury because I'm not a citizen. I would love the opportunity to serve.

They need young parents on this jury and they are the ones that are going to be the hardest to get, hardship and not wanting to leave their child for such a long time.........and the woman who said it was against her religious beliefs scares me...not a good juror for the State...

She is going to be outed.

Well, I differ. Here's how I handle it:

--I will not write any sort of letter for anyone who works for me to get them out of jury duty;
--I will pay them while on jury duty;
--I, myself, always report for jury duty when called, ready and willing to serve. Although defense attorneys don't ever want me. But I'll keep going.

That's how important it is to me, because again if I ever end up at the defendant's table I want people like me on the jury. If I refuse to serve myself that would make me one hell of a hypocrite, don't you think?

ITA with you, and wish people would think the same. However, I think the system itself has caused a lot of apathy to where people find it a chore, rather than a civic duty. At this point, I can't help but feel bad for someone who has a legitimate problem serving, but is forced to do so because they fit some profile the Defense may be looking for. For that person, the duty has become enslavement.

Were you sequestered? 6-8 weeks is a long time to be away from home for most people.....

Solace it wasn't a full eye roll but she did make a smirk and seemed irritated. It was clear.

Might be that since this is to be a lengthy trial it is easier and more efficient and far less expensive to weed out potential problems now that mid-trial.

well adnoid and a few others with sense have just ruined my life :| I always swore I would never sit on a jury if I was ever called, I'd say anything to get out of it....but now that it's been pointed out to me that were it ever me on the defense side, I sure would want people like me on the jury! dang it!

I think the issue here really is the time- 6 to 8 weeks is a LONG trial.

I agree with you, it's our duty to keep our system working.

Your comment about defense attorneys not wanting you reminded me of a Becker episode where Ted Danson's character had jury duty and kept being refused because he was reading a book!

Sadly, my health keeps me from serving on a jury, but I think the process is fascinating.

I'm in Seminole County - names are drawn from voters registration here.

From the Pinellas web site:

"The Florida statutes required the selection to be random and all names must are placed back on the list every year. Jurors are selected from the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle files, which include both licensed Florida drivers and those who have a Florida identification card. Jurors who have served within one year from their last service date may be excused."

I commented about this upthread. I thought that the potential jury pool would have been surveyed about possible moral or religious objections to the DP and those individuals who had reservations about their ability to impose the DP should have been excluded from consideration. jmo
