I don't think Gerus is dead, fwiw- I'm pretty sure "went down" means "went down to the call". Maybe somewhere south of where he is stationed

I don't know about everyone else, but in my neck of Mississippi/Louisiana/Alabama Gulf coast, we "go down" to the store, the bar, hospital, beach, etc etc Just colloquial speech with some people around here. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Gerus is still with us, and enjoying a happy retirement.

They do. About 10 years ago a student in Casselberry, FL (near Orlando) bought close to 350 bullet proof vests for our local police dogs. She did it through her 4H project and raised about $150,000. It just goes to show that we love our canine deputies here in Central Florida

Actually, just found a link to the story. I remember this because I was the advisor of a local youth environmental club at the time and some of my kids did a fund raiser to help raise money through our school. This kid was amazing and it goes to show how important it is to get kids away from the TV's and computers and back out into the real world and involved in positive activities
