I don't think Baez has any plan. No rhyme or reason to have these people on the stand. He drags them up to try and discredit them but he has no idea what they might say or what he is really looking for. No goal. Just takes up time and talks minutae for no reason. This testimoney is a big nothing. Then when Baez argues the case he will just make up something using some aspect of what this guy said. He will just invent a closing argument using this stuff somehow.

I know! His technique is to say in a snarky voice what he wants the witness to say. Then when the witness says, basically, "No, that's not right," he just says the same thing again in a snarky and exasperated voice. Guess he's hoping the witness will break down finally and confess to the murder, like in the TV shows.
But I think you're right, and in his closing he will just mischaracterize what the witnesses have said. Can an attorney do that? I think they can. It's the jury's lookout to remember what they heard originally.
