2024 Hurricane and Tropical Weather

The Maritime Shipping trackers show the impact of a pending hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico:

Very little tanker container or tanker traffic between Hurricane Milton and the Florida west coast. Lots of activity around the Port of the Everglades and the Miami ports, with what looks like numerous shipping vessels bound for the Gulf ports in Texas and Louisiana just hanging out on the eastern Florida coast.

Move the cursor to the west to see all the ships and tankers hanging out near the Texas coast trying to avoid Hurricane Milton.

There are several tankers out there off the Louisiana coast that are tankers with a destination of Tampa, clearly hanging out for the hurricane to pass.

Here is a very cool visual tool to see the winds around the globe. Turn the globe with a finger (touchscreen) or a click-and-drag with a mouse on a computer screen. Zoom in for a close look at those hurricanes.

Oh, that's wonderful

If I enlarge the image, the center eye of the hurricane is records a wind speed of 1 km/hr. I don't know how accurate that is, but it does just emphasize what a complex phenomenon a hurricane is.

Thank you Antie Cipation

They will be protected from the water surges but what about the winds? Those trees will likely be uprooted, and those small boats blown away, not to mention some of those campers toppling over.
Better there than being in the path of surges though.

I experienced a hurricane once in my life, in Hawaii when was a kid. We were stuck in a hotel, on an upper floor, in the bathroom as instructed. When it was over the windows had blown out and there were palm trees in the swimming pool. Cars were scattered and overturned on the streets, and the garage and ground floor were flooded. It was frightening at the time.
This however is 100 x worse.

Was your experience Hurricane Iniki??? Hit Kauai in 92... pretty sure it was 92. We were there , a full year later..... almost everything was still shut down and the sense of heartbreak and despair was still with all the people.

Hurrican memories just hang on........ f o r e v e r

Fellow WS'ers in the hurricane zone -
Please take care of yourselves and the ones you love. I always think of the many homeless animals and people during these kind of natural disasters - stay safe and well.

This. It is expensive to evacuate. People don't know where to go, or how to get there. I understand this. There is a lot of poverty in Florida. People who are "invisible". Living in small, old houses, often with a disabled parent. Maybe a few young kids, in a rural area, but still within storm surge. Dogs, chickens, they just can't wrap their heads around leaving their home. Maybe they drive a 2001 Toyota Camry, gets them to the store. With bald tires, no spare.

"Seminole County had to clarify an evacuation order after issuing a wrong alert
that told the entire county to leave the area ahead of Hurricane Milton.

An evacuation order has been issued in the county exclusively for people in mobile homes,
low-lying areas
and those with special needs.

Locals panicked after receiving an alert sent by mistake that stated
that the entire country had to evacuate ahead of the historic storm."

This is so real. People living in cars that barely get them from one hiding spot to another. People have barriers that are insurmountable. If you’ve never lived in forced poverty, you can’t possibly relate. My daughter sent me $100 for gas so I could leave.
