In November torrential rain and storms have devastated parts of Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka, affecting millions of people, and there has been reports of more than 900 dead in the region.
In the last week Indonesia was hit by an exceptionally rare tropical storm, named Cyclone Senyar, which caused catastrophic landslides and flooding. On the island of Sumatra at least 440 people have dead. People are still missing, believed to have been buried in landslides.

On 30 November Sri Lanka reported at least 193 deaths, and more than 200 still missing after floods and mudslides had hit the island in one of the worst weather disasters in years.
A state of emergency is declared as the president says it is the "most challenging natural disaster" in the country's history.

One of the places with the highest number of deaths reported is Kandy, I had a penfriend there back in the 1970s. I lost contact with her many years ago, but I hope she and her family are safe if they still live there.
