I don’t get it. The Newfoundland meteorologists are sounding the alarms, but from what I’ve seen on Twitter and elsewhere, there’s almost no discussion or notice.

This is going to be a big storm—category 1–and all the trees are in full leaf.

I was thinking the same thing. Is there no tributaries that water will push inland, no flood warnings? The entire coast isn’t a cliff like in the movies. Not at all what I’m used to since we got them a lot.

The warnings are all out, and are increasingly more dire. I’m not sure why there’s no sign of people preparing. Their last storm similar to this was about 8 years ago, from what I’ve read.

The hurricane is hitting Newfoundland on September 11th, a very solemn occasion, of course. A very difficult anniversary.

Many US planes were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland that day, and they took great care of the passengers and crews.

Gander is a tiny town. 38 airliners, totaling 6,122 passengers and 473 crew arrived that day. Gander is west of where the hurricane will likely hit on Saturday.

A good thread on Twitter about it:

They were halfway to America when the pilot made an announcement. “We’ll be landing in Gander, Newfoundland.” What? Why? Where’s Gander? Newfoundland?

There is a good book about Gander on 9/11/01, called "The Day The World Came To Town". I recommend it.

Snip:
Showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave were continuing to organize over the western Caribbean on Friday. This system will drift into the southwestern Gulf of Mexico later this weekend.

From Sunday to Tuesday, an area of low pressure may attempt to develop over the western Gulf. AccuWeather forecasters have been watching this zone for more than a week, and on Friday, they raised the development risk to a high level.

"The key [to tropical development] will be if the center of low pressure can remain over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico long enough," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Rob Richards said, adding that it is likely that the system will be over warm waters long enough to become better organized into a tropical depression or storm.

Nicholas is a rainmaker. I hope those on the coast can get to higher ground.

Storm surge and tropical storm watches have also been issued, meaning dangerous storm surge and tropical storm-force winds are possible within 48 hours, respectively.

I agree, Tropical Storms can be devastating. Especially slow moving ones, that just keep circling and dumping water. I remember one in Florida, that caused tons of flooding. Barely a blip of news mention.

Snip:

Residents along the coast from Port Aransas to Port O'Connor face a life-threatening storm surge of up to 5 feet as Nicholas barrels down, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Nicholas came ashore near the eastern part of the Matagorda Peninsula, about 10 miles west-southwest of Sargent Beach, Texas, about 1:30 a.m. ET Tuesday, packing 75 mph winds.
