2024 Hurricane and Tropical Weather

A further thought about this: people have been advised to keep out of floodwaters because of the risk of chemicals and pollutants in them, so I wonder if any of these other substances could also corrode EV batteries in the way that salt water does.

I don’t believe it’s corrosion that causes the fires.

It is the amount of sodium ions in the salt water that cause a short circuit of the electricity which abnormally causes the battery to “activate” abnormally and generate extremely high amounts of heat. There is even enough sodium in the crust from evaporated salt water to cause the same problem even after the salt water recedes.

There aren’t enough other electrolytes in the contaminated water to do so. I think most of the problem is from petroleum - based oils and fuels like diesel oil and gasoline.

I was wondering what happened with his house. I had thought the straps should have been wider where they crossed the roofpeak. Well good for him. There was another family who chose to stay in a concrete house. 2-3 stories, that his late fathet had designed esp for hurricanes. Anyone hear what happened?

Yes, he was in the thick of it all, but focused too much on a man named "LD."
Perhaps BE was directed to focus on him? jmo

Edit: I posted a few X postings and that was it.
LD has received far too much attention and glory for his foolishness.

On social media he is being referred to an an American hero.

Expecting others to be copycats in future storms, seeking fame and glory.

Didn't he succeed mainly because the sea water was sucked or blown westward out of the bay? Wasn't that a fluke which could have gone exponentially bad had the hurricane shifted a few degrees and blown the storm surge into the bay? Do I have that right?
What a jerk off, looking for publicity, now other copy cats will die and first responders will be in danger if future hurricanes approach slightly differently.

Hurricane humor that finally cracked me up. Sorry if it offends anyone.

Good news: we are in Sarasota, sad to see the debris everywhere tho.

Great news: the power came on 15 minutes after we arrived!!

We left PCB just after 7am CST (8 EST). We stopped for a bathroom break & topped off the gas tank before we got on I-10. In Lake City (I-75) we stopped again and topped off the gas tank. The third stop the gas line was so very long. We had 3/4 of a tank of gas so didn’t get any.

Lots of heavy traffic around Gainesville & Ocala. When we looked at the off ramps, there were long gas lines. Many had police directing traffic.

We saw two gas tanker trucks with police escort. A number of other tanker trucks too. One truck was being escorted in the left shoulder. The police car had sirens and lights. People didn’t bother to get over which is Florida law. What the Helicopter is wrong with drivers?!?

We are lining up people to take care of my yard. The neighbor and his friends took care of the front yard which wasn’t bad. We will stand the tree back up in the morning.

I took lots of photos of the yard. The roof looks ok, no loose shingles.

They keep your phone dry, too. Seen it a bunch in flooding events, here in Australia. It's less of an issue since waterproofing improved on phones, but still. Floodwaters are nasty.

Condoms are actually common in theatre sound tech scenes for protecting microphone packs from sweat! Or else they used to be, I haven't been in stage stuff for a while. They do need to be unlubed tho, which that one.... looks like? can't say I've ever seen anyone shove one over a whole mic like that.

My grandson is ok. His company was staged in St. Lucia so that after the storm they could start to remove trees and work along with the power companies to restore power. Unfortunately. he is somewhat traumatized because he was in the location. where tornadoes hit last night, and helped with searching and rescuing the people. He saw dead bodies for the first time in his young life.
Very glad your grandson is ok, but so sorry he's been traumatized. I thank him and all other National Guard personnel for their service! They have been deployed a lot this year. We also have friends who are linemen and are in FL, GA, and NC and have been away from their families for several weeks, working long and dirty hours. Please keep these folks in your prayers.

According to an article in the Mail,

"Joseph Malinowski, 54, nicknamed Lieutenant Dan after the famed 'Forrest Gump' character, has sparked fierce scrutiny from his fanbase after he very casually dropped the N-word while livestreaming on Kick.com - a popular streaming platform."

Specifically:

"'If you want to get back in my good graces, it’s going to take time and a lot of work. It’s going to be hard. Cause once I cut you off, you're done n****… Sorry, alright, that's it, you're done,'"

In addition, it has emerged that he has a long criminal history and is well-known to the police.

Well he just sunk his own boat...

FYI - Hurricane Helene recovery efforts have been threatened by armed militia in North Carolina

This article was posted today about hurricane officials in NC temporarily re-locating away from areas in Rutherford County, North Carolina where local armed militia have been out threatening to attack FEMA workers and officials. Unbelievable.

Hurricane recovery officials in N.C. relocated amid report of ‘armed militia,’ email shows

Safety fears are growing as misinformation collides with a large-scale federal recovery effort.

Around 1 p.m. Saturday, an official with the U.S. Forest Service, which is supporting recovery efforts after Hurricane Helene along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, sent an urgent message to numerous federal agencies warning that “FEMA has advised all federal responders Rutherford County, NC, to stand down and evacuate the county immediately. The message stated that National Guard troops 'had come across x2 trucks of armed militia saying there were out hunting FEMA.’”
Chimney Rock, in Rutherford County, has become one of the centers of tension and conflict after a rumor spread on social media that government officials planned to seize the decimated village and bulldoze bodies under the rubble. Authorities and news outlets debunked the assertion, but people still took to social media imploring militias to go after FEMA.

People have been yelling at federal employees delivering aid or showing up to do repairs, saying, “We don’t want your help here.”

One Forest Service employee, she said, was pulling into a gas station when someone yelled at him to leave, saying “We don’t want the government here.”
“It’s terrible because a lot of these folks who need assistance are refusing it because they believe the stuff people are saying about FEMA and the government,” Duncan said. “And it’s sad because they are probably the ones who need the help the most.”

Homeowners insurance can be a nightmare in Florida.Interviewed a family who is still fighting to get money to rebuild from a hurricane 2 years ago.It is not uncommon for hurricane victims to have to take insurance companies to court and even have full fledged trials.
