Here's a different screengrab view of the gear shift cap being on/in tact in BK's car when he was pulled over by LE on October 14th, which occurs at 1:29.
I've read that the gearshift would be one of a few primary locations LE would typically sample to look for (victim) DNA, as well as the gas & brake pedals, and maybe the trunk.
IIRC, BK and his dad took his car in for service / maintenance after they got back to PA.
So it makes me wonder if something happened to the gear shift cap (or gas pedal/brake rubber pads) between mid October and mid December, if any were replaced during that service.
I wonder if BK told his dad someone had broken into his car and stole some parts like the gearshift cap, and his dad said oh that's too bad son, we'll take it in and have them do a thorough going over and make it good as new for your trip back to WA after the holidays.
