7.0 Earthquake Hits Haiti Hospital Collapses

My sis-in-law is in Florida (has been since Friday) - has finally been reunited with one of the 2 children. Love this pic! However, the girl's brother is still tied up in all the red tape. He supposedly is on a plane with two other kids today, but there is talk about Orlando holding onto the children, wanting to put them in foster homes first - meanwhile the adoptive parents are there, frantic to get their children. Also something about the adoptive parents having to have the paperwork to be foster parents.Things are very unclear right now as they are trying to get the straight story. We are hoping for a reunion with her son since she already has the daughter.

I think your sister in law is awesome, and I pray they will not split up the siblings.
I wrote on my face book during the concert that I wish I can go and get 1-2 of the babies. (but my situation does not allow for it) Keep us updated. :)

United Nations troops used pepper spray yesterday to hold off a crowd of hungry Haitians queueing for food at a makeshift camp in the grounds of the wrecked presidential palace.

“They’re not violent, just desperate. They just want to eat,” Fernando Soares, a Brazilian army colonel, said. “The problem is, there is not enough food for everyone.”

It seems to me with all the money they've collected, and all the countries helping, they could at least feed the people by now.

My opinion only

Anderson Cooper reported yesterday that nearly 5,000 Americans are missing in Haiti. He is highlighting the search at the Montana Hotel. Bil Hawkins, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, states they are "trying to recover bodies with respect and dignity and honor ...for some sense of closure ...". AC states that the Montana Hotel is one of the most searched sites in Port Au Prince. ... Some Americans who died have already disappeared. He's talking about how the Haitian government is bulldozing people into piles and not even covering them with dirt. Dishonoring the dead. Mass graves not covered over ... just dumped on the ground ... little effort has been made to cover them ... this is not how anyone wants their loved one's life to end. Haitian government could at least make the effort to bury their citizens and others but they are literally just leaving the bodies in piles. AC said the Haitain government has answering to do as to why they are treating people this way - the dead and the living - no one from the government has answered their calls to explain why they are not making an effort to give the dead a proper buriel.

Lynn University Richard Bruno's lovely daughter, Lauren Bruno. nods while AC says that her dad served the foreign service for 21 years. Lauren does not blame the State Department but wants her dad home however that could be done. She realizes this is a disaster that is hard to deal with and AC assures her they are working to recover the people at the Montana with dignity. She thanks the rescuers for their help. She wants people to know that her dad was a wonderful person who only wanted to help people and make people happy by teaching and trying to help. Lauren has sisters and they are hanging in there but it's hard for them. All the Lynn U families need closure and want their family members home for buriel. AC wishes them strength.

This is a total disgrace. they also buried people in mass graves without taking pictures of them for ID.
This is making me angry. We have to demand a change.

Hi songline. How though? I get concerned for AC when he reports these things while still in Haiti. The truth needs to be told imo. Denial does not solve a thing.

Someone has been appointed to oversee the donations. I was in the kitchen when they interviewed the gentleman so I only noticed that that was the subject of the discussion - no details sunk in as I was actually cooking. Haven't seen the segment come up again yet.

I love AC and I am glad he is reporting this. It has to be reported. but it still makes me mad that the dead are not getting dignified. even the ones in a mass grave have not been ID'd.
I would never suggest denial
I think Anderson has protection. I do not think he is foolish..

You are asking How....I am assuming about the mass graves...other wise please clarify.
Before putting them in a mass grave they should have taken pictures. there is a lack of food
but there seem to be no lack of cameras. :(

And by now everyone should be able to get at least one meal till more food arrives:

Girl pulled out alive 15 days after Haiti quake
17-year-old was under rubble of home that collapsed in Port-au-Prince
<<<SNIP>>>
Darlene Etienne, near death from dehydration and a broken leg, was rushed to a French military field hospital and then to a hospital ship, groaning through an oxygen mask with her eyes open in a lost stare.

"She's alive!" said paramedic Paul Francois-Valette, who accompanied her into the hospital.

I know I have not been here, but the concert was awsome.
Many of the songs were really awsome. All the performers were feeling very deeply and I sat here in tears, wishing I can go bring some babies home.

some of the songs that still keep playing in my head 5 days later are.

Madonna: Like a Prayer
Justin Timberlake: Hallelujah
Beyonce: Halo

Haiti Telethon Raises $57 Million

Obama pledges $100 million aid to Haiti
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2010/01/obama-pledges-100-million-aid.html

There are others groups and countries who gave so it must be into at 250M by now. (estimate)

there should be no body hungry or thirty there by now.... NOBODY.

You stated that we should demand a change, a stop. I wish we had the power to do that. I don't disagree but I don't know how we can do it. That is why AC is calling the situation out on national TV - hoping to affect change I would think. It's too late for so many because they've already been put away undignified like that with so much time having gone by, etc. I meant I wish there was something a regular American like me could do to stop the degradation to humanity but honestly I can't think of anything.

Also I didn't mean anything about you and denial. What I meant is that AC is telling it as he sees it even if it's ugly because to deny it (to be politically correct for instance) will never help to change anything. A lot of times I make a statement under someone's post that seems like I am saying it to them but I'm just tacking on a new thought that's totally unrelated to the reason I first replied. I think that's what keeps happening with my communication that gets confusing. In other words, I added the denial statement that had nothing to do with what I think you believe or said previously. It was a new thought I had at that moment. Like one thing leads to another but is not directly related to the above. Make sense?

IF all the poor and needy were being fed, I'd agree with you. BUT, I'm reading there are a lot of hungry people in Haiti. WHY can't "they" get food to them with all the food and money pouring in? Put the food on tanks and run over the torn-up roads - get out there and FEED those people.

My opinion only

Ideally it would be fantastic if aid workers had been able to get food and water to everyone that needed it. But I think that logistically the numbers are just too great for it to happen as quickly as people would like.

3 million: Estimated number of people affected by the quake
1.5 million: Homeless people living on streets, including the thousands who lived in slums or makeshift homes prior to the quake
300: Aid distribution sites that are up and running

As quickly as people would like? It's been how many days now, and how much money has been collected?

FEED THE PEOPLE NOW, ANY WAY YOU CAN.

ITA it has been 3 weeks .
Logistics had been a huge problem but by now with 150 plans coming and going daily
RICE & OATMEAL goes a very long way.

FEED THE PEOPLE NOW...

Yes there are camera there.
Not enough meds & food but there are cameras.
Why not take pictures before the mass grave is covered up?
Why not send the Americans home, we have enough plains there daily?
I know that in some catastrophes in the world that was done.
why not this one. :(
Anderson cooper is good to report the truth.
This is making me sad and hurt for the families that may never get closure. :(
