What We Know About Chilling Case of Dismembered Students Found in Mexico

They were found Sunday March 2nd in San José Miahuatlán, Puebla, about 6.5 hours from the beaches they were visiting, in an abandoned along the highway Volkswagen Vento, according to Central Puebla Irreverente. The vehicle was near the border between Oaxaca, the state they were taken from, and Puebla, the state they were found in. So this is going to require the cooperation between 2 states.

Video surveillance from Feb 24 shows the vehicle driving along the Atlixcayotl highway, about 90 miles west of where the bodies were found, Periodico Central reported. Newsweek says the video surveillance shows the victims alive in the vehicle:
“Chilling CCTV footage captures the last known sighting of the group on February 24. They were seen traveling along the Atlixcayotl highway near the town of Atlixco, approximately 90 miles west of where the remains were later discovered.”
(Link below)

The victims are all said to be from Tlaxcala and were vacationing on Oaxaca’s beaches. One report indicates they all left Tlaxcala on the same day, and the wording indicates “together” as if they were all friends, but I’m still not certain about the relationships.

Most reports take this stance:
“The nine people reported missing are said to range in age from 19 to 30. They had all traveled to beaches in Oaxaca, though it’s unclear how many of them knew each other.”

From what I’ve gathered, it seems 2 of the victims were friends/traveling together and 2 more were as well, but it’s unclear if each PAIR of these friends knew each other — for a lack of a better way of explaining it….

At least one was a parent— a 28 year old mother to a 5 yr old and 3 year old.

Some were reported missing on February 27th and others on February 28th, so the video surveillance of them all together on the 24th confuses me. Some were visiting Zipolite, Oaxaca, and some were visiting Santa Maria Huatulco, Oaxaca— both towns/beaches in the state of Oaxaca. These 2 beaches are around an hour drive apart, and seem to be very popular.

9 pairs of hands found. 8 in a bag and 1 pair in the trunk, so all 18 of the victims’ hands were found. Bullet holes and signs of torture on the body parts. :(

The dismembered bodies of the previously reported missing females were found in the trunk. The dismembered remains of the missing young men were found under a bloody tarp in the cabin of the abandoned VW sedan. Some reports are saying some body parts were found outside of the vehicle. Not sure if that’s true.

A female named Brenda, was reported missing but later found alive and alone in Puebla. Before being found, she was last seen traveling in a Ford Fiesta with her friend, Angie, one of the females found in the trunk. Hopefully Brenda can shed some light on what happened to Angie, her friend, and the rest of these young adults. Did she escape, or did she and her friend separate for a bit, so only one was taken? Nothing is being reported about Brenda except departed for Oaxaca with Angie, seen in the Ford Fiesta with Angie, lost contact on the 27th and reported missing, later found alive. Can we assume Brenda wasn’t in the surveillance video of the Volkswagen? I have not found the date of when Brenda and Angie were in the Ford Fiesta together. Was it before or after the 24th, the date of the Volkswagen surveillance? Considering the date of VW footage and the “last seen alive in a Ford Fiesta” and last heard from on tbe 27th I’m confused about that footage from the 24th considering the location of the footage, inland & hours away from the beaches.

Others reported missing by the Oaxaca Attorney General include Raúl Lozano and Noemí Moratilla, both 28, who were last seen in an Audi at San Pedro Pochutla, a half hour inland from Zipolite, on Feb. 28.

So horrifying and sad :(

Just noticed this case and have found updates in some Mexican media.

I'm cutting and pasting to clarify the story as it appears in the MSM El Pais, and adding comments from having visited there.

"At the end of February, 10 young people were kidnapped between the tourist towns of Huatulco and Zipolite, two of the main tourist destinations on the Pacific coast [of the state of Oaxaca]. The bodies of nine of them were found inside a vehicle, 400 kilometers away".

The victims are known in the media as the Tlaxcala nine, they all came from that area, near the biggest cities. There's no indication they were students, but they knew each other.

From the OP's post, I think they drove to the beach in a few vehicles around Feb. 24th.

Brenda Salas somehow escaped and got back to her family. She's said she was kidnapped by local municipal police.

An eleventh member of the group of young people was arrested the day before the kidnappings started, and has allegedly told police: "[He and his friends] came from Tlaxcala to commit some of these acts: robbing ATMs, robbing shopping centers, robbing account holders... Not all [of the youths], but a significant portion of them. There were others who came with them; we think more of a tourist trip."

The investigation is focussed on the police in the small town of Santa Maria Huatulco, (also just called Huatalco, but inland, around the airport, vs the beachfront resorts and condos).

Investigators have reportedly discovered a network of 40 unofficial security cameras. But even more dramatically, they have arrested two of their own State-level police authorities, who were based in Huatulco.

(Just to note, the strip of Oaxaca beaches is isolated by a massive escarpment, with - until a highway just opened - only a few steep, narrow, windy roads connecting it to the cooler plateau where most people live.)

In addition, "on March 1, a few hours before the bodies of the young [people] were found...a Huatulco businessman...was found murdered. He had been shot eight times, confirmed the Secretary of Government, Jesús Romero. A placard accusing him of being a thief was found on his body...This crime has become a key factor in the disappearance of the Tlaxcala group, since some of the young men had been staying at his hotel."

Everything else, such as in the NY Post linked above, is still speculation.

However, the media report refers to the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel. I recall several very similar crimes by them in other regions, going back 10 or 15 years.

They used gruesome dismemberment, and left innocent victims where they would be found en masse, as a message to everyone in the area: 'don't dare mess with us'. It's a sort of terrorism.

And they are the ones with enough money and power to corrupt an entire police force plus State prosecutors.

While young thieves from the city wouldn't know about them, I'm very surprised a local business owner would be so foolish as to cross them.

Cartel members can be paranoid and over-react. IMO, possibly the one guy from this Tlaxaca group was caught stealing or robbing, and the police (or Cartel members dressed as police) decided to round up the whole group plus the hotel owner, on the off-chance they might be associated with a rival cartel.
