A view from the inside: observations from our own court observers #2

My email got kicked back too. Here's what I wrote:

Dear Mr. Safron,
It has come to my attention that Monday, March 4th, will be the last day of employment for legal correspondant, Beth Karas. This has got to be some kind of sick joke. Compared to the rest of your "stable of talent" over at HLN, Beth stands out as the only one with any sense whatsoever. Is CNN now solely catering to the Kardashian crowd? Even though I am very interested in the Jody Arias trial coverage, I had to turn it off tonight due to the hideously unattractive panelists with shrieky migraine-inducing voices on every HLN program. Surely I am not the only viewer who desires truly knowledgable, genuine, non-hyped, legal expertise that Beth Karas has been providing for many years, and there should definitely be a place for her on your network. I beg you to do whatever is in your power to remedy this situation as soon as possible.

Sincerely yours,

CNN- Zucker

CNN just brought over Zucker from NBC. They are in the midst of a major overhaul of programming.

IS - future of court programming. This is just my unbiased perspective. The days of a cable network having 6 hours of courtroom coverage is gone. Courtroom trial coverage will be streamed online - as we are watching with the Jodi Arias stream.

Mr. Safon is a marketing guy (he worked with AC360 & NG to name a few). Try from the angle of a web produced program for Beth's talents. Similar to TMZ Live - Harvey Levin (remember him - "he's a lawyer"). He launched TMZ Live first as an online hour daily web program. Interactive with tweets / skype / etc. Now it is syndicated. He built the momentum o/l for TMZ Live .. got the numbers & then got it picked up. Web produced program might excite CNN as it is "new media" & may be lower cost.

In the not too distance future all of our cable & internet will all come in one cable & be viewed on one box. It won't be "appointment" viewing - all interactive.

Is there an o/l petition for Beth? Need to come up with a "tagline" for the "please save Beth" campaign ...

Apologies if this is not the appropriate forum to post this (the "insider's forum) on WS.

There was a petition, in one of the other threads a couple of days ago, but I can't find it. I did sign it.
I'll keep looking for the link.

I'd be happy with an hour show if it was good. As I said before, Beth is better than what's on now. I do like NG, but liked her better when she wasn't so over the top. Dr. Drew is in desperate need of a decent co-host. :)

Maybe we can get a "save Beth" thread started for us.

JVM needs to go! They should fill the spot with Beth and a non tabloid style of serious trial discussions with intelligent and honest informed opinions. Not manufactured debates.

ITA - I love Beth. I have always been amazed that she has not gotten more air time. But it's a number's game - viewers & ad buy.

Here's a link to the gentleman: http://www.cnn.com/CNN/anchors_reporters/safon.scot.html

Scot M. Safon is Executive Vice President for CNN Worldwide, where he is responsible for managing the domestic US television network HLN. He is based in CNN’s world headquarters in Atlanta.

Question: where is the o/l petition for Beth - or did I read that wrong?

Thank you & kudos on Rikki Lake ... brilliant. My sister was sexually brutally raped & murdered ... it's great what you are doing for her. My thoughts are with you.

Thank you!!! I wrote it down wrong.

Then it should be [email protected]

There is also a contact form on the HLN site.

Very sorry to read about your sister. Very very sorry. Thank you for sharing.

Can you or anyone help with that tag line? Is Save Beth Karas too weird sounding? What is a good line? Help!!! Wanna make the FB page tomorrow! I appreciate all of your input Labradorable!

I really need someone to answer this for me please. Don't the jurors get to see her face close-up like I do while watching online? No big screen for the jurors to watch her face closely?

In this day and age, I'm so surprised to find out the jury isn't supplied video access of the trial to watch again, and they have to rely on their notes so much. I feel I have more the advantage to grasp info from home, more than the jury. Jurors are the ones that make the big decision.

No one but the court reporter sees her face close up like we do online. They are in person but in the jury box a distance away. ,this courtroom was carefully created with a focus group so I feel confident in the distances.

I'm glad they get to write notes and ask questions...not always allowed!

Thank you for that link! Here's the email I sent (it didn't get kicked back):

"Dear Mr. Safon,

Beth Karas will no longer be working with your network?? Say it isn't so!

Beth cuts through the legal babble and makes trials easy to understand. She has warmth and appeal. Can't say the same for some of the rest of your on-air talent. Sorry.

Please can't you find a way for her to keep reporting trials on your network? For many of us she is the voice of reason in a sea of screeching talking heads...very refreshing!

If Beth goes, I will no longer have reason to watch. I believe a lot of viewers feel the same way.

Please reconsider. Thank you for your time."

I hope everyone bombards them with emails...SAVE BETH!

Perfect! And glad we finally landed on a good link!

Without talking he keeps saying..in her little "move" I notice how she highlights her left forehead in a little lift up to present it as "this is how he was when I shot him in the head". So rehearsed and staged. Calculated.

Bailiff crosses to talk to an armed guard at the jury door in front of us. Highly unusual in the middle of testimony. SHe stands there for a fairly long time...kinda weird.

Flores returns to the courtroom after that little break and after Jod's demo.

He ws "screaming obscenities" but she can't remember the words.

She remembers when she closes and opens her eyes..."blinked hard". Yet can't remember clean up/washer/packing / driving/KILLING

LIAR

she screamed "STOP" with the gun...rrrrrrright

BOMBSHELL!!!!!!!

The finger. "that's the only visible injury" she admits she injured her l ring finger during the crime. ding ding ding!!!

She slipped up with the finger and trying to wiggle out but no wiggle room.

Dad taking notes non stop throughout this finger business.

"You did say the only injury you received was..." Perry Mason moment

she remembers every word he said then forgets the rest

Tri color head down writing intensely during this.

Maureen hand over mouth writes down about JA dropping knife and screaming.

Katie,
What do you mean by "without talking he keeps saying..."
Who is not talking and how can he say anything without talking? Thanks.

Yep, it was shown on the feed.

After ja got off the stand she went back to the defense table and started writing with her rubber golf pencil. The attorneys were up at the bench discussing the issue with Judge Stephens.
I didn't see her shed a tear once her performance on the stand had come to an end.
Was it during the hearing to have some records unsealed? That is when I saw her writing.

Thank you for your excellent court room reporting. :)

She never cried. She was faking. Another thing, when Nurmi mentioned death, it never phased her. Monster this one.

I'll go back and answer questions once I get all my notes out.

So we walked Katie to the trucks and all sat out there talking and I was bound and determined to talk to Beth again about wth is going on with In Session and HLN coverage. Basically she thinks they will still cover the trial BUT thinks it might get cut off in the morning.

I had a really long talk with her. She's so nice. She's one of those people while she's talking to you she's reaching out and touching your hand or arm. I dunno I just really like that but I'm a sucker for affection.

Ok so she really needs our help. I talked to her about starting a "cause" facebook page. She likes the idea. And the CAUSE is to get her to keep covering trials. Somewhere. I don't have a good idea on the perfect title and if anyone out there wants to take on this project, that would be great. She's in to it. I just keep telling her how many fans she has and I don't think she really has any idea. I think we need to mobilize to help her. And there is an email address she gave me to write letters to protest her job loss or try and persuade them to keep her on live trial somehow. She really doesn't know what she's gonna do.

She gave me permission to post her email address here and said she's launching her own FB page in March.

She will be on a CNN show tomorrow night at 10pm est I think. and also Good Morning America early Sat. am 7:30. I gave her so many hugs and we both got tears in our eyes. I go way back with her.

Also I told her and guess I will go on ahead and tell you all, I was contacted by a producer for the Ricki lake show ironically just as I was walking in to court yesterday to ask me to be a guest. I was shocked when I told him I was just walking in the courtroom and he said "for what?". I assumed he contacted me related to my involvement in this trial but not at all. He'd just googled our case and knew a TON about it so asked if he could call me back today and did.

They are doing a show on murder for money and want to highlight my sister's case. This is a near and dear subject for me as I hold the insurance companies complicit with her death. We sued them and lost. It's a HUGE part of our case and if not for them, she'd be alive today and they didn't follow their own checks and balances (in fact "waived" them). Had they make ONE phone call they'd have found out her killer had a prior conviction for insurance fraud and would have never sold the policy. I'm shaking typing this as I feel so strongly about this and it was so unjust for my family. So I agreed to be on the show. They are flying me in March 11 taping the 12th. So...will keep you posted about air dates or whatever. Kind of weird timing as he knew NOTHING about this case even! Very little anyway.

Oh! I had a long talk with Julie Christopher on the sidewalk which was super interesting. I know she bugs a lot of people (the intutive) but this kind of person is in my world and I really found her interesting. She's french and gorgeous. Don't want to go in to details other than I had that encounter.

Ok for Beth:

at HLN write if you want to give them something something as in begging for laying her off:

[email protected]

her email (with permission)

[email protected]

I think direct fan letters would really make her day! Her last day is Monday I think. I'm in total denial. I need to bring her a very special gift!!!

I will write a sort of "form letter" if you want a copy to send HLN. Haven't done so yet so just pm me if you want it...feel free to use it. I think we need to bombard them so they know how many fans she has. Thousand and thousands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:please:

Katie,
First, thank you for the notes. We all love you.
Second, I am sorry you lost the case against the insurance companies involved in your sisters death. That is shameful. And I am really sorry for your sister and you and our family.
Third, thanks for asking Beth for her email. I will write her today. She is special and I will miss her.

Finally, this case and a lot of other things has taught me you cannot count on truth in the news from the media. They don't highlight the facts Juan has proven. They highlight the tears and we who have followed know how fake she is and how cruel she is. Yet they are telling the nation that there are people on the jury who will feel sorry for JA. Even JA's friend who visits her in jail says she is confident it will be a hung jury. Makes me sick to my stomach. I remember that sick feeling after CA walked. If it happens again, we may as well all face that there is no justice in this country regardless of evidence or how wonderful the prosecutor might be. And Nurmi and Baez are disgusting. There is a difference between defending someone wrongly accused and defending a monster. All my opinion.

I really need someone to answer this for me please. Don't the jurors get to see her face close-up like I do while watching online? No big screen for the jurors to watch her face closely?

It looks like jury sits to her right side, not really close and she covers her face with her hair and tissues. Not sure they see it all.

They appear to be adjustable shelves. If you try to step on the front edge of those they will tip and fall forward. Maybe Jodi should have been asked to demonstrate that too on a mock-up shelf.

That is exactly what I thought! Did JM miss an opportunity? I do know he should never ask a question unless he knows in advance what the precise answer is. maybe he didn't want a glove scene as in OJ.

Ball check! I missed that! :floorlaugh:

Did you hear Nurmi say 'eviscerated' when describing Jodi's rights during a death penalty trial at the special hearing? He has a lot of Freudian slips! 'Drop dead,' etc. Poor Nurmi--I think it was hard to see Jodi on the stand during Juan's masterful cross yesterday.
