About NamUs

I had a tiny hope that the update would bring a change to the account registration process - as a non-American user, I would love to have an account to view rule-outs and other details visible only to registered users. Unfortunately that hasn't changed: you need a US address to register for an account.

I appreciate everyone here who shares rule-out lists!

I just put a random US address in. Oh no siree, I'm not in Scotland, I promise I live in PA.

I wanted to register on some crime site and was refused because I did not live in the US (I do). I was using a little-known service provider and so re-tried on my Verizon phone and the registration went through. I don't know if the provider made a difference or it was just a fluke that I was rejected/accepted.

I have not had issues with accessing exclusions. But for some reason the capability for downloading these as csv files seems to be spotty. Not sure if it's my browser (Firefox) or something else. Copying and pasting is pretty laborious if the list is long.

Just curious, but why does NamUs list color for each eye? I would think it's extremely rare for anyone to have two different eye colors. I've never met anyone like that. Maybe I've just lived a sheltered life.

One of my sisters has two different colored eyes. One green, one brown and it's not like they're close i.e. greenish-brown or brownish-green. Nope, a green and a brown and very noticeable.

Why Do Some People Have Differently Colored Eyes?

Hi,

I was wondering when NamUs takes people off of the list. Some one I know was entered into their system, is still listed, and yet the law enforcement agency that oversaw her missing persons case had found her partial remains. I emailed the person what the law enforcement agency had told me but never got any response and she is still listed. Just wondering if anyone here knows?

Thanks,

Mike

NamUs doesn't remove cases until or unless the LE agency tells them to. I'm surprised the NamUs staff member didn't get back to you. The one I deal with most often always responds. I've sent in several resolved (missing found/UID identified) cases but the NamUs RPS still has to validate the info with LE/ME-Coroner and get permission to remove (archive) the case.

I'm wondering if the LE Agency that has the case you're speaking of is keeping her listed because of an ongoing investigation. They may not want it widely known that she has been found and identified at this time.

Quick question: Does NamUs sometimes show a MP and matching UID simultaneously to the public while they resolve the match? I noticed that right now MP85546 and UP86369 are both up with the same name and photo and assume they obviously know and are working to confirm the match? (May he R.I.P.)

Oh, my. That is interesting. I haven't seen NamUs give resolved cases to the public since the really early days of NamUs when registered users could actually get emails when a UID was identified and/or a missing person located. But who knows with the new admin at NamUs.

OTOH, I'm thinking maybe they got the photo of UID Juan from the El Salvador ID. And maybe the photo of Missing Juan is from a TX ID. And maybe the NamUs RPS isn't even aware of it. TX is a huge state with a ton of cases. It's gotta be a beast trying to keep up with them.

@CCJD So you think someone overlooked it when posting the second one? I'll keep an eye on it. I predict the cases will be gone sometime in the upcoming week. Maybe a medical examiner has to confirm he's the same person?

Missing Juan last seen 9/29/2021 - NamUs Case Created 10/20/2021
UID Juan found 11/1/2021 - NamUs Case Created 11/15/2021

Both in Brooks County but ...
Contact for UID Juan is Brooks County Sheriff
Contact for Missing Juan is Hidalgo County Sheriff (I wonder why)

Two different jurisdictions entered the cases. You'd think Brooks County Sheriff would have searched NamUs to see if Juan was entered as a missing person when he entered Juan the UID but maybe not.

If the cases aren't gone in the next week, you should contact either jurisdiction or maybe email the NamUs RPS.

@CCJD I'll email the reps if it stays longer than a week, but I can't imagine no one will notice it. Poor man and his family.
Thanks for responding with your thoughts.

The UID was reported as a "near complete or complete skeleton". The MP had only been missing for a month. Even in South Texas, would that have been long enough to reach that state? The UID was found with the MP's wallet, which presumably is where the same photo for each came from, but maybe they need dental records or DNA to confirm. No height/weight was estimated for the UID. Maybe there was cause for doubt about a match?
ETA the MP's photo was from an El Salvador ID according to NamUs.

I am hoping one of you who has a NamUs account would consider submitting this case. It seems to be an open case with law enforcement assigned to it, so I am not sure why she isn't in NamUs. Thanks to anyone who takes a look:

Just curious about this. There's a few UID cases in NamUs now that have predicted eye color based on DNA phenotyping. Here's an example:
The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)
There's also a recon image based on hair color from DNA phenotyping, which looks slightly different than the hair color in the initial recon. It seems to be from Parabon.

This seems likely to be quite helpful for some cases. Any thoughts on how widely available this analysis might become?

ETA I just now found the thread for her here along with some discussion of this issue. NamUs was a bit confusing as their title says she was found in Albany.

I came across this case, which is not in NamUs. It seems like it should be. It's on Doe Network. From what I can tell, it hasn't been resolved (?)
Is there anyone able to/ willing to submit it to NamUs? Maybe we would find out why it hasn't been added, or perhaps they would go through the process and actually add it?
The case is: VT - VT - Christopher Michael Jarrold, 32, Brattleboro/Ludlow, 25 June 1993

Vermont is not one of the 11 states that require reporting MPs to NamUs.
Is NamUS Reporting Required In Your State? Here’s A Look At State Legislation On The Missing & Unidentified Persons Clearinghouse - Biometrica Systems, Inc.

Theoretically anyone with a registered NamUs account can submit a case, but since it has to be vetted with the LE contact for the case, it makes more sense to just ask them to submit it. It looks like the Ludlow police are the contacts for Mr. Jarrold.

Thanks, @Curious_in_NC
I especially appreciate the 2nd link. I didn't realize NamUs had such a useful FAQ.

I don't reside in the U.S. to be able to create a NamUs account but maybe I will send the Ludlow police department an email suggesting they submit the case.

How do you tell if a missing person or unidentified person entered in NamUs has DNA available? And then if they do, how do you know if/when that DNA has been run against other possible matches in NamUs/CODIS?

I guess I am wondering how likely it is to find a match in NamUs for someone who is listed as "Unidentified/Unclaimed" compared to an active missing person? Is it possible or have they likely all been checked against each other.
