About NamUs

There's an issue with NAMUS as of writing this. No cases show up on search, at all. No matter what you do it give "No Cases".
Direct links to specific cases still work however, it's just the search function is messed up.

This happens periodically if maintenance is happening

Sometimes closing and restarting your browser will clear the problem.

As @doggybag2355 said, it just happens periodically.

And if they're doing maintenance/upgrades, they usually do it on weekends when the Regional Program Specialists are off.

Does anyone know why NamUs changed to make you log in to see UID rule-outs?

When did they make the change? Anyone know when, or why?
It’s been at least three years since they made the change. No explanation that I ever saw why we had to register in order to see the exclusions. They also make me change my password every three months whether I use it or not. It’s a bit much.

It happened in 2018 when NamUs 2.0 was launched and NamUs became housed on the NIJ Cloud. During the transition, NamUs went from .org to .gov, I.e. a government website, when things got tightened up considerably including: hiding biometic info from public view, no longer receiving updates/changes to cases we tracked and going from 2 passwords (one for identifyus.org & one for findthemissing.org) to only one at namus.gov.

On the other hand, that's also when registered users were able to view rule outs for missing persons, which had previously been hidden from public view.

Oh, and we had to re-register.

From NamUs on May 13, 2018:

On May 21, 2018, you may access NamUs 2.0 from www.NamUs.gov using your existing username and password. Upon your first login, you will be required to activate your new NamUs 2.0 account and update your password to begin using the new system.

We sincerely thank you for your support and understanding throughout our transition to NamUs 2.0!

It's honestly sad that you have to look elsewhere for exclusions. I would make an account on NamUs but I'm not from the US. Why would they gatekeep this information especially when it can be life changing for the world to know something as simple as exclusions. Do they have a reason to do it that I'm missing?

I think it's the other way around. To get a lot of information you have to have a need to know it. We the public don't have any need to know.
