AL - Carlethia “Carlee” Russell, 25, faked own abduction, Birmingham, 13 Jul ‘23 #5

  • #161

I had to post this because I think the premise by the author of the article that introducing legislation to try and prevent future faking of incidents such as this, is (wait for it) RACIST!!! Read it for yourself and see what you think. I think it is ridiculous.

It is ridiculous and I am tired of this type of thought process as it excuses people from being responsible for their own behavior.

Clearly the author chose to ignore the fact that the states surrounding Alabama already have those tougher laws on the books, and changing the penalty to match the crime had nothing to do with race. But there will always be some...just pouring gasoline on a fire.

So, I think the media as well as the public can’t have it both ways, the media over sensationalized this case only adding to the public outrage of an immature woman doing something very very foolish that wasted the time and resources of the Birmingham community and LE in which she’s being held accountable and hopefully getting the help she needs for a more well balanced productive life. Her case made headlines every day. That national coverage only increased upon her voluntarily return home with false claims that unfortunately her parents publicly supported. Combined actions and the high profile attention placed pressure on LE and the justice system to respond swiftly to the public demands that she be punished to the max. The media should have redirected their attention to truly missing persons instead of further inciting an already outraged public. The media is creating a divisive atmosphere all for ratings and using social media all for financial gain- they should put the spotlight on themselves.

It’s a felony in other states. Alabama needs to update the law regardless of the publicity this case generated.

Q

In addition, to me the robe and toilet paper are telling. If at a Red Roof Inn, simpler to sleep in a Tee and your underwear, and the toilet paper can’t be that bad and isn’t that important. It’s as if she were going somewhere where there was no tp at all. Just thoughts…..
Are there any new subdivisions in the general area where the houses are still in the process of being built but there is a show house that is the sales office? A lot of prospective buyers go to the sales office to peruse the floor plans, models, upgrades, etc during regular business hours. Could there be vacant models that her mom has shown and may have codes for that Carlee knows? Perhaps she stayed in a vacant home still not completely finished waiting for customer upgrades.

I see there's quite a few residential building companies in that general area. There's a few pretty close to the I-459 called The Preserve, Taylor Burton and Tower Homes.

I think it's a good law to introduce. Now more than ever because there are so many individuals out there on TikTok and Instagram who purposely push the envelope when it comes to scenarios that get them internet fame. Most of that fame is fleeting since the players highlight just how dumb they are doing things like the Teeth Filing challenge, the Niquil challenge or the Gorillia Glue hair gel challenge. The point is to go viral, getting millions of views. More idiots followed them into infamy, pain, embarrassment and doctor's bills.

But Carlee's stunt didn't just involve herself, it created an instant galvanization of LE, private citizens, news outlets and federal investigators searching for a women and a toddler. Just like that idiot boy who thought it was funny just to walk in to a stranger's home unannounced and might have come thisclose to getting shot. His little stunt involved trespassing, not so funny and not only stupid but incredibly dangerous for everyone who was affected by it, including himself.

Just like law enforcement implements new technology to keep up with new and more inventive ways to cheat through AI, LE have to fine tune laws to address the types of behavior that has flourished with technology. This is no different, imo.

As to Carlee's failure to provide the location of her sojourn while her city searched and expended time, money and anxiety over her stunt, I believe her silence is rooted in the fact that she told someone what she planned on doing, even if it was during an argument, a threat, or plea for sympathy. Not sure who that may have been or if they didn't take her seriously. But after the first 24 hours of her absence decided to zip their own lip in case they faced charges, too. MOO

Thomar Latrell Simmons addressed his ex's kidnapping hoax for what he described as "the first and last time" in a YouTube video Sept. 1, nearly two months after Russell disappeared for 49 hours before admitting she faked her own abduction. He said he's had no contact with the Alabama nursing student since the ordeal.

"I'm still healing, still coping," Simmons explained in the video. "It really traumatized me."

Saying he was home at the time, Simmons responded, "What? Stop playing," and was told, "No, I'm serious. No, we can't find her." Simmons recalled thinking, "What is going on?"

He said he got in his car and quickly drove over to the site. He "went to the search party, had no sleep, didn't take no shower" all while he was "looking for my girl."

Thomar Latrell Simmons says questions surrounding Carlethia "Carlee" Russell's abduction hoax have tormented him in the weeks and months since Russell appeared to have vanished along an Alabama highway in July after she placed a bogus 911 call to report an endangered child.
[snip]
Simmons briefly addressed the bizarre ordeal, which garnered national media coverage this summer, on a new podcast he co-hosts. In the 24-minute recording released over the weekend, Simmons revealed the couple had a “little argument” shortly before she disappeared.

“I mean we had a little argument but it wasn’t nothing to kidnap yourself over,” Simmons said on the podcast 205 Boyz.
[snip]
“I’m confused, like, ‘What happened?’” Simmons said on the podcast. “‘What made you do this?’ I don’t understand.”

Did he have a Podcast before CR's fake abduction or did he create it it after the incident?

Either way it's interesting that he has also gained audience/followers from the 'Fake Kidnapping'.

did a Google date search and, no, the "205 Boyz" podcast did not exist before this episode.

(the results visible are due to some weird thing about old pages being updated with new widgets, I've long since lost any idea of how social media works)

9/5/23

Simmons appeared baffled by the situation and when pressed on what was going on before Russell left, said they had just returned from New York City on vacation and had only had a minor squabble.

'We hadn't a little argument but it wasn't nothing to kidnap yourself over,' Simmons told host Marcus Moody.

[..]

Simmons denies during the episode that the podcast is an attempt to chase clout and gain attention in the wake of the media firestorm facing his ex-girlfriend.

He adds that he is yet to reach out to Russell since the entire ordeal and says she hasn't tried to speak to him either.

'We haven't had no contact with each other,' he said and he doesn't seem eager to open the lines of communication anytime soon.

[..]

He says he's still got to look out for his own mental well being at this time.

'I've just been going day by day, every day just been getting better and better. Especially with my friends and family, I'm thankful for,' he said.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — “This is my last time talking about this situation.”

That’s what Thomar Latrell Simmons, the former boyfriend of Carlee Russell, made clear during his podcast, “205 Boyz,” to talk about Russell, how she faked her kidnapping in Hoover in July, and if they had talked since her arrest on filing a false police report charges.

During the podcast, which debuted Friday, Simmons was joined by friend and co-host Marcus Moody, who asked Simmons about what his life had been like since Russell’s hoax, as well as the online rumors about him having a part in her going missing for several days before walking home.

“(I’m) trying to get back to my normal life, but it’s never going to be normal for me,” Simmons said. “I can’t even go around Birmingham without people knowing who I am. It’s crazy, bro.”
