AL - Carlethia “Carlee” Russell, 25, faked own abduction, Birmingham, 13 Jul ‘23 #5

Emory Anthony is one of the top criminal attorneys in Birmingham. He has defend murderers. IMO, I think most locals knew how this was going to go knowing he was her attorney.

So when is she going to restore the public's faith in her character by telling us where she actually was? No, I guess she can't, because it was probably pretty awful.

They should have ‘offered’ her a plea. Tell us where you were and we won’t send you to jail for a year!

Realistically though don’t they have to know where she was in order to complete the investigation and charge her? Makes me wonder if they aren’t disclosing that because it will have adverse consequences for an innocent person.

At the time, her charge was a misdemeanor in AL. The Legislature upgraded making a false police report that is threatening (public danger) to a Class C Felony.

At the end of the recorded interview, it’s interesting what the bill writer states regarding the Carlee Russell case.

IMO, I think there’s a negative reaction for Carlee as it appears no one wants to hire her. I would have been devastated @ her age to have national negative publicity, not only about the fake abduction, but also the theft from her employer.

Certainly not something to brag about, having your name highlighted in reference to a legislature bill change for harsher charges. I won't be surprised to see her in the future doing some type of tell all to try and redeem herself. Maybe Dr. Phil? All jmo.

She did not help her cause in the least by displaying absolutely zero remorse. Her non-apology, apology as presented by her lawyer was sterile, unfeeling, and fell so far short of the mark. It seemed disingenuous, imoo. Perhaps she could, if she truly is, start there and issue a genuine apology. Whatever she does though, it needs to come from her. amoo

IMO there is nothing further that I need to hear or see from this individual. Her actions, false report (a lie IIUC), her seemingly insincere and IMO fake ‘apology’, and actions since and through the attorney say all that needs to be said. And if the individual is having difficulty finding employment, that seems to be a self-inflicted result from those actions. MOO

Right! Not even close to the mark. I think in some weird twisted way she is enjoying being in the news even if it’s not positive.

She is desperate to be known and remembered. At least she didn’t unleash a hail of bullets to get attention.

It won’t surprise me if she finds a way to make money from this in the future. ‘My silent suffering caused me to have impaired judgment for a brief period in my life’.

From Jan.17, 2024 story in ^ link.
"Senator April Weaver will sponsor the bill in the Senate. The Alabama Legislature is expected to take up the bill when it gavels in for the regular session in February."

A quick search did not find unearth it immed'ly but after a few zigs & zags, I found HB 82, 2024 Reg. Session (aka ACT #2024 -345.), amending Section 13A-10-9 w effective date Oct 1, 2O24.

She can't get a full-time job. Quoted from the Chief of Police, from the article above:

"She could do better, she could spend more than $50 a month, I mean I think she got off pretty light, and under those circumstances I was hoping that the judge would at least make her fulfill the restitution,” Derzis told WBRC Tuesday. “Go borrow money to pay us, do something, sell some items, don’t get your nails done, whatever the situation, I am not very happy about it.".

Most folks thought she should be a required to tell where she had been during the time she was missing, However, at the time it was a misdemeanor.

When this happened, Chief Derzis said the cost was higher. Estimated cost: $40-50,000.

Plus the numerous volunteers: It’s fire hot & humid in Alabama in July & not to mention the bugs & critters in the “woods” the volunteers searched through.

I do hope she got help!
