One of the LE individuals at the press conference made the statement that the calls regarding the car abandoned at the car wash, were NOT about the Alabama couple, just the abandonment. Even James, when interviewed by Brian Enten, indicated he "did not want to call 911", and just called the police office". Think about that.... IF there was a strong reason to assume it was them, who WOUNDN"T call 911???

I personally believe we do have a case of James getting his "15 minutes of fame" handed to him by Brian. If Brian had not spotlighted him, I'm not sure that he would have actually been given reward money....

However, I still think there will be partial reward given to him, because of the publicity, his general involvement, and the subsequent release of the surveilance videos. (But we have to remember, he only reviewed those tapes YESTERDAY).
In his interviews yesterday, James explicitly stated that he did not call 911 because all he knew at that time was that there was an abandoned car, which he didn't consider an emergency. He did call the police station, and then the Marshalls called him asking if he'd towed that particular vehicle and where he'd sent it, which he said was Tri-state Towing.

That cracked the case once the video from the car wash was seen as well.

IMO James did his heroic citizen's duty or we'd be looking at a much more grave outcome down the road.

I'm a New Yorker and we've been hearing "see something, say something" ever since 9/11. He did. Bless him.

IMO

Has it been confirmed anywhere why VW was calling 911 just before the crash?
I'm kind of thinking she was trying to get them to call off the chase by threatening suicide, but of course they wouldn't do that. It will be interesting to hear the call if released. Moo.

Yes I was referring to CW with tats etc. i will find it but HE supposedly had gang ties here in Alabama.

The car wash dude. Man he just hit the lottery with his ID of them!
Just goes to show, it does pay to do your civic duty. Some of the time, at least. <modsnip> I hope he doesn't get robbed or something, due to the reward money. He seems to know how to take care of himself, though. He's alert, we know that much.

The whole thing just has a bizarre overtone to it. It being her last day in the job, I don't know if there would have been any repercussion if she'd not gone through with it and then he'd told staff he'd had a sexual relationship with her (pure speculation that was the case), or other favours?

Why was she visiting shops after the escape when she could have planned all of that before?

And then the car wash, I get that at some point you'd have to attempt to live a somewhat normalish life. But I don't understand what could possess them to use a car wash in the week after with it still painted across the media. I understand you need fuel, food and water if you don't have any but giving the car a clean? Bold.
I haven't read anything suggesting they actually washed the truck. They went to the carwash IMO to abandon it. Which is a really poor place to abandon a vehicle, since it will be obvious within a short time period. They could have left it in some parking lot and not had it noticed for days. Especially since it was bought and not stolen -- likely LE was not looking for it until James called.

I like the idea someone posted that maybe they intended the truck to be stolen from the carwash.

Actually I think they should have left it in an airport parking lot, leading LE (if it ever got traced to them) on a wilder goose chase, wondering if they might have made it onto a plane somehow. MOO
OK, peeps; I confess; I can barely tell one midwestern state from another! My bad. IN, not IL.

Doubt a terminal illness would have you hoping for the endgame to be a shootout with LE. Sounds like someone seeking excitement and adventure and watched too many movies.

Not even a real Motel 6, an independent motel that had lost or given up its Motel 6 franchise license.
I guess since they were fugitives, they couldn’t opt for something nicer. Plus, they had really blown through the money buying all those vehicles. Still can’t believe they hadn’t planned for a cabin or RV or hiding out in Mexico. This was destined to fail.

Was this her attempt to get LE to back off so they could get their arsenal pulled together for the shoot out?
Maybe. If true she was foolish to think that would work. LE stayed on them and wrecked them out. JMO.

It sounds to me like she really loved Casey, even if he was only using her. She must have loved him so much that she wanted to help.

I wonder if they will have another presser soon, since CW will be returned to Alabama quickly, and we may have future pressers by the US Marshalls task force in Alabama, with information included in them that is from Indiana findings.

I don't think there will be a presser just for the coroner's findings when it is released, which usaully takes some time. Perhaps just an initial press release in Indiana without a press conference.

The Sheriff in Indiana (Wedding) said that there would be no charges against CW from Indiana, he is facing enough serious charges in Alabama to take care of him, something to that effect. So probably no future press conferences, just my guess.
I'm guessing that the Indiana Sheriff has all the evidence needed to prove that CW did not shoot VW? MOO

Can someone fill in a blank for me? How did the US Marshall’s know which motel they were in? I must have missed this detail. TIA

Their plan was to have a shootout with both of them losing their lives.
Glad it didn’t happen. But shocked that they had no expectation of a future.

Good point; it was only a little over a week ago, that she potentially had a bright retirement ahead of her. Savings, a very solid pension, a home, an unblemished work record with commendations, even. She could have had a nice life: international travel, whatever she wanted. But instead of going for that, she chose to make a series of decisions, that cut her life short within a week. Wow. That's really sad.

I wonder what that "dark side" was about, that the former co-worker they interviewed mentioned? Where/how did a "dark side" develop? Had she had a rough childhood? Was it the stress of working in LE and the prison system? We'll probably never know, unless her mother says something. Her mother must be in total grief and confusion right now.

The colleague who said that VW had a dark side was an employee she fired, IIRC.

Hmm. Interesting. The manager at the motel they were staying at said that he never actually saw them and said that it's possible someone checked in for them.

Now it's very possible he is lying but also possible they indeed had some help.
I e-check into hotels all the time and am able to use my phone as a room key. I seldom interact with the hotel staff.

It was either her mother or MIL IIRC, who said she was the type who wanted to help people. Something of that nature.

From what I’ve read, after they saw Casey on the car wash surveillance, they then saw Vicky coming out of the motel with a wig on. She got in the car with CW and the police chase ensued.

I was wondering about that; wondering if they had a motive to say that about her, like maybe she'd fired him. He also said, that no one at the prison was surprised at what she did, though. I wonder if there's any truth to that.

Casey’s first words were “Please help my wife. She just shot herself in the head and I didn’t do it.” (See link)

Edited due to information in this thread stating he showed no remorse for her death, which goes against the opinion I had written. Interesting.

That's interesting as far as what happens with the cash, vehicles, guns. Since the property is in Indiana I think Indiana would have to seize it? Or possibly the Feds. But if they aren't charging him with a crime and they can't charge VW with a crime, then due to recent changes in Indiana law that increased requirements for civil forfeiture, I think at least Indiana would not be able to keep the cash, guns and cars via civil forfeiture.

Since as far as we know VW obtained all the cash and cars and guns legally, I think for the Feds to forfeit it they would need to charge VW with a federal crime--and they obviously can't do that. Fed civil forfeiture without a conviction is only permitted if the property being seized is proceeds from criminal activity--usually drug or theft related.

That said, civil forfeiture is a nightmare area of law. The government can seize property and put the burden on the property owner to prove in court they are entitled to the return of the property. The law is shifting toward tighter restrictions on the government's ability to engage in civil forfeiture absent a conviction for a crime. But there are still limited situations where they can seize and keep assets without securing a related conviction.
