Bond Set for Couple Accused in Dakota Burke-Everett's Murder
"There were healing injuries beneath the new burns. Probably the most extensive I've seen in my career. They were horrific," said Lt. Paul Burch, Mobile County Sheriff's Office.
Assistant District Attorney Jo Beth Murphee testified it was ultimately head trauma, including a fractured skull that killed Dakota. Prosecutors asked for a high bond calling the couple a flight risk and uncooperative with investigators.
(snip)
"That was his daughter. He had no emotional attachment to Dakota. As for why? I can only tell you what our law enforcement opinion, is that this child was an inconvenience to this new couple," said Lt. Burch.
(District Attorney) Rich says the hasty marriage between the two just four days after Dakotas death may not hold much weight. "They weren't married at the time these act were committed and I think that's what important. They got married afterwards and I think that speaks volumes about them and spousal privilege in this particular situation," she said.
(snip)
The judge set bond for both defendants in the amount of $20,000 for aggravated child abuse with a $1,000 cash component and $150,000 for murder with a $10,000 cash component. They are due in court for a preliminary hearing on February 3rd.
A celebration of the toddler's life is Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home. Dakota will be buried at Valhalla Cemetery. A memorial motorcycle "Ride for Dakota" also takes place on Saturday. The ten mile procession will leave the funeral home after the service and end at the cemetery.

Is anyone else infuriated that 1) these two poor-excuses for human beings and so-called "parents" even qualified for bail and 2) beyond disgusted at the ridiculously low bail amounts for MURDER charges?
Am I on another planet? What in the Sam H3LL is going on here?

Where is the #JusticeForDaKota?
Because I have to tell you, right now, I feel insulted on her behalf.
Purely my opinion, posted with a whole herd of :cow: - very angry at the BS I just read.
:censored:
:silenced:
:tantrum:
ETA: are they trying to make it easier for her/them to bail out?Someone help me make sense of this! I don't understand. This is another textbook case of the victim becoming voiceless - because their rights are not constitutionally protected as defendants are. :moo: pullhair:

Welp. Can't say I feel bad about her jailhouse "run-in."
"If a prisoner of war had been subjected to what this child went through, there would be an international investigation." District Judge Bob Sherling said that on Tuesday after listening to testimony about the nearly six weeks of alleged abuses that led to the death of 20-month-old DaKota Burke on Jan. 8...
Offering testimony during Tuesday's preliminary hearing, Mobile County Sheriff's Office Sgt. James Riddick offered a chronology of testimony. Summing up statements ranging from Nov. 22 to Dec. 30 of last year, Riddick told the judge how family members, authorities and medical personnel described the discovery of as many as 25 different bruises, fractures and hemorrhages in 10 different places on DaKota's body...
He said one of the doctor's described DaKota's head trauma as an "immediate lights out," that would have rendered her incapacitated instantly.
Tuesday morning, District Court Judge Bob Sherling sent the case to the grand jury...
When asked if as far as the actual act of abuse, is it believed both are involved in it, Murphree said, "The fatal head injury? It is believed that that was Chrisopher Knapp."
Lt. Paul Burch with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office said, "There were multiple people that said that little Dakota was terrified of Chris. She physically trembled anytime she was present with him, whoever else may have been in the room."
Ugh. That was difficult to read. This woman knew her baby was terrified of that jackleg and apparently didn't give a damn.
