AL - Five people, ages 22-35, slain at Citronelle home, 20 Aug 2016 *Arrest*

 • #41
I think it's fairly unreasonable to expect police to hang around if the person hasn't been found at the location. Even if there is a warrant for an arrest. Departments are often understaffed. If they hung around every residence in a case like this...there would be no police left to go on other calls.

It's a sad situation all around. The guy left. He came back. It sounds like he killed them while they were in bed. Had they been able to call the police again, I'm sure they would have responded since that is their job. But unfortunately, it doesn't sound like that happened.

Would it have been nice if police could have stayed? YES. But sadly that just isn't how things work.

Yes, it is sad, 6 are dead, butchered. I hope all the other important calls LE had to answer saved some lives.

I really do feel bitter and angry about this. I don't feel LE did much of a job to help these people. On the other hand, if this family felt they were in so much danger, why in 'ell did they go to bed and go to sleep? I sure wouldn't have.

I am really upset about this. Dial 911, piffle! The Lord helps those who help themselves. Too bad they weren't armed.

If the cop had sit there all night, and at 6:15 am, daylight, said, OK, looks like he's gone, time for me to move on. Then the guy comes back at 8 am and kills them all while eating breakfast. There are not enough cops in this country to give personal body guard service to every person/family who feels threatened.
That's the reason to own a firearm. You lock down the house and sleep with the gun by the bed or under the pillow. If the perp decides to kick down the door to get in, you have to be ready. If necessary, have the adults take turns sitting up on alert. If the whole family felt safe enough to go to sleep, they must have thought the threat was over.
Sad that it comes to this sometimes. But if you have a protective order, and have already called LE cause the person is lurking, then is the time to shoot him.
All MOO.

Agreed wholeheartedly. My SO is LE, has been a detective for two years, was a patrol officer for seven years prior. He's often stretched so thin because the resources made available by his department are few and far between. To expect an officer to provide constant vigilance over a single property is wholly unrealistic. And to the person who said "its their job, if they don't like it, quit"-most officers love their jobs and are proud of the work they do. They certainly aren't in it for the pay or the accolades. At least once a week my SO is in fear for his life. It's not an easy job and they have no control over the amount of resources available to them.

I'm sorry for the soapbox rant, but it irks me to see people questioning/blaming LE when, from the outside, the answer to this horrific crime seems simple had the cop just stood vigilant at their doorstep. But knowing from an insider perspective how unrealistic that really is, I had to say something.

according to this, ANOTHER live baby was found in the home. and the end is confusing, they said the crime was reported by a woman who walked in sat afternoon and reported a body. im guessing that was LL... but did she think there was only one? how horrifying!!! and who's baby was there still?

The woman kidnapped by her abusive ex-boyfriend after he murdered her five friends in their beds escaped his clutches when he momentarily left the vehicle, Mobile County District Attorney has revealed.

Wow. That's the first I read about a child left behind. And who do all those outside toys belong to?

To enforce the law when it is broken. There was a trespass call and they didn't find the trespasser on the property, they can't just wait around for him to come back. The Citronelle, AL PD employs 8 officers and 4 auxiliary officers, they can't just sit and wait in case a criminal might show up again later. I'm positive the very vast majority of trespassing cases when someone says I'm calling the cops" the trespasser hightails it on out of there and doesn't come back anytime soon. http://www.cityofcitronelle.com/departments.asp

I don't care if I offend people so I would like to know what was going on that was more important that night? Spending less than 15 minutes looking for a man (trespassing call or not) who has an active warrant only for that same man to come back and kill that many people, deserves answers. I will question officers when I feel they need to be questioned and I think the officer/s in this case need questioning.

" ...sad, 6 are dead, butchered...."
Yes, agreeing, extremely sad. sad, sad. Changing one variable - like LEO(s) staying around for hours - would not necessarily have prevented loss of 6 lives.

If LEO responding to 911-trespassing call had stayed around, close to home, sat on front porch or in patrol vehicle, it's possible that there would 7 dead, butchered. If one perp killed six people at one time & location, IDK if perp would recognize laws against injuring or killing an LEO.
Not clear to me if only one LEO was in patrol car, or if 2 LEOs responded, either in 1 car or 2. If 2 LEOs, could have been 8 dead.

Also as rob posted: "If the cop had sit there all night, and at 6:15 am, daylight, said, OK, looks like he's gone, time for me to move on. Then the guy comes back at 8 am andkills them all while eating breakfast. "< ---bbm
And if LEO(s) had stayed thru breakfast time, perp could have returned & killed them all at noon.

And back to Trident's post: "I hope all the other important calls LE had to answer saved some lives."
I hope so too. But in any case, imo, LEO(s) staying longer would not necessarily have saved those 6 lives. JM2cts.

Shannon Randall and Joseph Turner had 2 young children. One was the 4 month old that LL took with her. The other was a 3-4 year old child. The whereabouts of the young child haven't been mentioned. I'm wondering if the "4 month old" left behind that the Daily Mail refers to is actually the young child and they got the age wrong.

I didn't mean this case in particular. I was replying to the article where the courts ruled that police are not required to protect you from harm

This is a shocking story. At least they have the perp now and he can (hopefully) cause no more harm.
These posts have been such an interesting read about the role of LE. As many have said, this event may not have been preventable and LE do have a lot of pressures, but it would be interesting to see what the other call outs were that night.

Here he is talking to reporters:

He says he did it because he was on drugs, meth specifically, and the drugs made him think things were happening that weren't really happening. He says he let his girlfriend and the baby live because he came down and realized what was going on. He says that he loves her, and says he's sorry to the families.

Oh my god, I can't believe they allowed reporters to be that close to him and to ask questions. Is that usual? I'm a bit disturbed by that whole "show".

That was pretty awful. Some of the questions those reporters asked were hurtful and way out of line, IMO.

BTW, is there anything else about ANOTHER child being found?

I'm just shocked he was walking about in public! Where was he going? Why was he out? Do they not put prisoners in cars/vans to transport them from A to B?
