Suspect in Alabama house murders used ax, gun in middle of night, police say

A man accused of slaying five people at an Alabama home brought an ax to attack his victims, striking one who had been sleeping in a reclining chair, and also used guns he took from the house to shoot them, an Alabama sheriff said Tuesday.

Derrick Dearman entered the house in Citronelle before dawn Saturday, Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran told The Associated Press.

"They were down for the night sleeping, and he had enough familiarity with the house when he entered — I guess you could say in a rage — and he's disabling people as he's in there," Cochran said. "He was able to overpower them before they were able to protect themselves."

An ax and a gun were used in the killings of each of the five adult victims, police allege in criminal complaints filed Tuesday in Mobile County District Court.

<snip>

Dearman's first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday morning. Alabama court records don't indicate whether he has an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

<snip>

As he was led away to jail on Tuesday, Dearman said he barely remembers what happened but said that he deserves a harsh punishment.

"I deserve to die," he said.

After reading quotes in your post, I had to verify straight from the source http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/08/2...s-used-ax-gun-in-middle-night-police-say.html and found it did actually state:

"An ax and a gun were used in the killings of each of the five adult victims, police allege..." bbm, ubm.
"...brought an ax to attack his victims, ...striking one who had been sleeping in a reclining chair, and also used guns he took from the house to shoot them, an Alabama sheriff said Tuesday."

Suggests imo, he first did a 'circuit' of all victims w an axe to render them unconscious/groggy/incapacitated, then made a second circuit, to fatally shoot them. Seems imo, if had had fired any shots before all victims were unconscious/groggy/incapacitated, one or more might have escaped, counter-attacked. or at least called 911. Considering apparently modest size of house, he must have been extremely quiet.
If he did this w 2 circuits, seems to show he reflected - for a time - on how to prevent anyone from escaping and how to kill everyone there. Not instantaneous. Or alternatively, entered loudly brandishing weapon(s), kept everyone under control w threat of using. Still had time to reflect. IDK.

Second, who owned the gun(s) used? Did he use handgun or long gun?
Per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_United_States_by_state for handguns or long guns, in AL:
Permit to purchase required?................................... No.
Firearm registration?.................................................No
Owner license required?...........................................No
Background checks required for private sales?....... No
Even if gun(s) used were lawfully purchased, might take time/be difficult to ID the owner. I hope not.

Third when did he take guns from house? Before the shootings, suggesting they were not his guns? Or after shootings, suggesting they may or may not have been his?

Puzzling, but JM2cts.

BBM and Snipped for focus

I wonder if they were still concerned about him and one stayed up to keep watch and fell asleep in the chair. If he had a gun and didn’t wake up soon enough, that would fit.

It is disturbing that he was able to kill five adults with none of them (from current reports) able to challenge him. His GF was awoken with him over her. Did she not wake up when she heard the shots? Did he shoot them after he woke her so she would have to witness the shootings? I am not sure we know the big picture here yet.

The photo of the house I've seen in the media shows it to be really small. I'm having a hard time understanding how he attacked five adults with an axe, later to go back and shoot them? Disabling someone with an axe would not be a silent event. How could one of the latter victims not heard something, and been alerted? Add to that there were guns in the house? Puzzling.

Now having re-read Everyday Grace's link, I'm more puzzled about sequence of events.

First step................ = Perp w axe entered home.
(Second or ?) ........ = Perp searched home for guns.
(___ ?) .................. = Perp located guns.
(____?) ................. = Perp used axe on each victim.
(____?) ................. = Perp shot each victim.
Last step ............... = Perp exits home.

How did he accomplish ^ this ^ in this small-ish sized home? Had he (or someone) drugged them to induce a deep sleep?

SOMEWHAT GRAPHIC

I too, find it very puzzling due to the small size of the house, and him entering, chopping at a person, would have to intensify a person to screaming, wouldn't you think? I just can't put this one together, and did everyone sleep through this? Honestly, I am saddened, but I can't understand unless he shot first, which my understanding he didn't, idk, I could be totally wrong.

And I wonder why he could not have been overpowered? So many questions!

Sickening!

I think there may be something we don't know yet based on the social media from those related to the victims. They seem as angry at Laneta as they are at Derrick. Very very sad.

Leelee, i saw those remarks on FB as well that suggest (ok, outright accuse/vilify) that Laneta is complicit in the crimes. you are right - so sad!

I sure did review them and I hope that they are not true.
Until I hear differently from LE, i am going to assume she was an innocent victim. If i am wrong, then i am gladly wrong. it breaks my heart that she is being run out on a FB rail after such a tragedy.

Cops: Suspect in massacre at Ala. home confessed; said he injected "ice"

A Mississippi man accused of killing five people with an ax and gunshots in a south Alabama home told investigators he parked in the woods nearby and injected methamphetamine “ice” into his veins shortly beforehand, new court records reveal.

Laneta Lester was awakened by the sound of a gunshot and saw her ex-boyfriend Derrick Dearman kill the other adult occupants of the home: three men and two women, according to search warrant affidavits.

Dearman gave “a full confession” when he was interviewed after the slayings, detectives say in the affidavits.

Dearman, 27, of Leakesville, Mississippi, has pleaded not guilty to murder and kidnapping.

He’s accused of attacking the victims as they slept Aug. 20, then kidnapping Lester. She had recently moved into the house in the small town of Citronelle, Alabama, to escape a violent relationship with Dearman.

Lester told detectives that after the five had been slain, she grabbed the only other survivor, her brother’s 3-month-old infant.
