Cops always tend to get shot when dealing with domestic violence calls.

Man mad at family and shoots at cops when they come to stop things. Jmo.

Basically agreeing w above: domestic disturbances are a type of call where LEOs are (most?) often injured or killed, whether by gunshot, stabbing, sucker punch, etc.

OTOH this did not seem to start as an everyday domestic violence call: Events began when "Subject set fire to son’s house, yard and car and killed the sons dog." <-- from OP's link http://www.claycountyweb.com/articles/hostage-situation-in-randolph-county/ July 9.

On the other hand, Dex, if you're saying that domestic violence perpetrators are not usually candidates for Spouse of the Year or Parent of the Year, mos' def' agreeing 100%, they are rarely nominees for ^ awards. JM2cts.
