Not publicly listed - does that mean she was not reported missing?

Sorry to multi-post...am to able to watch the presser unfortunately.

I don't see the gap in her front teeth like the reconstruction photo had?

I don't know if she was ever reported missing, but she wasn't in any publicly available MP listings.

I'm so sad for her... Confused as to why there was never a public listing, it feels like no one was looking for her (though I realize that may not actually be the case... It feels like it). :(

Great resemblance otherwise, especially on the sculptures. Notsomuch on the NCMEC recon.

This article says she was identified in 2011...?

Dorning says a family member saw an update to the story than was aired in 2009, and believed that the woman may have been connected to them. Investigators say they took DNA samples from family members around the country, and finally confirmed the woman's identity in May of 2011.

Why would they wait this long to release her name and still have her remains listed in NamUs?

Yes, it's confusing. One of the articles says this:
Davis' remains were released to the family a few months ago, and they buried her in California.

Then later says this:
Investigators used computer imaging to create a picture of what she may have looked like. Until this week, they did not know who she was.

Maybe I haven't had enough coffee yet but this doesn't make sense to me...

I agree, circumstances and everything don't match. One of those where you want to fit a square peg into a circular hole.

I can't imagine that the DOD would be incorrect. No only would it have to have been incorrect in DoeNet and NamUs, but also in the news report just released.

And if we accept that the DOD is probably correct, for this to be Paulette Webster, not only would her DLC have to be incorrect, but also her DOB. (or else, they severely underestimated the UID's age and Paulette was alive for a decade after her disappearance).

Pretty far-fetched IMO.

Yeah no kidding, was the recon just that far off? Sheesh :banghead:

A few more details here now of how she came to be Identified:

http://www.whnt.com/news/whnt-madis...emains-found-in-1997-20120306,0,3761962.story

apparently family out in CA heard a news story about in 2009, and called in saying they hadn't heard from Cynthia in several years, and that's how the ball got rolling.

Several years... Or a decade? :sigh:

Sheriff Dorning said it took several years to get the (DNA) results back, though, because they used the FBI Crime Lab.

Years?!?

This whole story confuses me. They just updated the UID's NamUs profile on Feb 27th to update the exclusions. The news article says the body was released to the family to bury in California last year. Why wouldn't NamUs have put identified on the profile???

The detectives probably kept the NamUs case managers out of the loop.

The article above says her ex-step-father phoned about the case. Apparently, he is blind so he made a call in 2007 as he could not view the Jane Doe picture. It took 2 years or more for the FBI to process the DNA.

This is the kind of story that is hard for me. There are so many people out there who do not report the missing for various reasons. Or they will post on FaceBook or in some of the old search engines. Many do not file police reports because of guilt, lifestyle, etc. I have found several UID that could be a match to a family placed internet post. Does anyone here try contact these families to try to encourage them to file a report? I wouldn't know what to do. I think the sad thing is many family members of the older UID cases are not computer savvy and they are passing away themselves.

What I find curious is that it was the ex step father who called in about the possible match with Cynthia .... it makes me wonder how much the biological family were interested in finding her at all.

Do you know the family personally that placed an internet post about a missing family member?

I also agree with you that some missing people are never reported missing due to their lifestyle, or just because the family isn't computer savvy... It's very sad.

My heart breaks for all the missing peoples' families and for the unidentified people that never got their names back.

I thought that also.
