BBM: Your post solidified what I had been thinking, as I started to read about the horrific, militaristic sounding murders of these two beautiful girls who had the whole world in front of them.

I am only on page 1 of this thread, but, the convicted Canadian serial killer, former Colonel Russell Williams had a lingerie fetish, was stealth like and stalking in the hunting of his prey, kept souvenirs of his victims (lingerie among other things), and was horrifically brutal in his murders.

In November of 1999, he was promoted to Major, whereby he served in Ottawa as a multi-engine pilot career manager.

He is a pilot.

He frequented the U.S.

He murdered 2 of his known victims and sexually assaulted 2 of his known victims during times of elevated pressure at work (promotions, etc.)

If it is possible to see if in any of his official military business included Ft. Rucker during 1999, it would be wise to do a Freedom of Information request to the Canadian Government.

There is a task force currently investigating Williams profuse international travels, and possible crimes.

Russell Williams - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wow, fantastic sleuthing, Wondergirl! And only one page into the thread too. I'm glad you've joined us!

This is most definitely worth checking into, in my humble opinion.

LR1, thank you so much for sharing this very valuable link.

I'll post all my notes on this Chronology of Events, but first I want to focus on what I think is the most important information contained in the CoE:

The Big/Little Store:
Photo, Details, Timeline & Questions

truck.jpg

Details
  • [The girls were] last seen at the [Big/Little] convenience store on East Broad Street by the railroad tracks near Carroll High School. They were last seen at this location by two eyewitnesses [Merritt and daughter] who gave the girls directions to U.S. 231 and who overheard the other girl [Tracie] on the phone say, "Hey Mom." It was about 11:30 p.m. when the two witnesses left the location when they felt the girls had made contact with their family and it was safe to leave them. (CoE 8/4/99)
  • Ozark police released a key piece of evidence in the month old investigation of the murder of J.B. Beasley and Tracie Hawlett. The piece of evidence is a partial picture of a white, gray, tan, or beige pickup truck that was parked in front of the Big/Little Store where the girls stopped to use the pay phone. The truck was parked at the store between 11:30 p.m. and 12:00 midnight on the night of July 31, 1999. Police feel that the owner or driver of the truck may be a witness that hasn't come forward and they are asking the public for help in identifying the owner of the truck. The picture is only a partial picture of the vehicle, so the make and model of the vehicle aren't clear. Police have been parking a variety of pickup trucks at the store and taking pictures of them to see if it would clear up the identity of the make and model. So far they haven't found a match. Yesterday afternoon at around 5:00 p.m., the parking lot of the store was filled with investigators and police vehicles working at the scene. (CoE 8/31/99)
  • Police are still looking for another possible witness who may have seen something at the Big/Little Store on the night of the murders. The security tape taken on the night of murders shows a light colored truck leaving the store just before the Mazda, which the two girls were in, left the store. (CoE 12/12/99)
  • Two women, Marilyn Merritt and her daughter, gave directions to J.B. and Tracie at the Big/Little Store. They added that after they gave the girls the directions, [Merritt and daughter] left the store heading west toward downtown Ozark and the direction to 231, and the girls left right behind them. [Merritt and daughter] didn't notice what happened to the girls after they left the store. The white truck that was parked at the gas pumps at the Big/Little Store left the parking lot before the girls did. They would like to talk to the driver to find out if they noticed anything unusual. (CoE 8/27/00)
  • Police Chief Tony Spivey said that the white truck in the video at the Big/Little Store is believed to be a 80's model Nissan or Toyota with oversized tires or four wheel drive. (CoE 9/17/00)

Timeline (According to CoE)
  • The white truck is parked at the store between 11:30 p.m. and 12:00 midnight on the night of July 31, 1999.
  • Merritt and daughter give J.B. directions to U.S. 231 while Tracie calls her mother.
  • Upon giving directions to J.B. and hearing Tracie say, ""Hey Mom," Merritt and daughter feel it is safe to leave the girls, as Tracie has made contact with family.
  • Merritt and daughter leave the store, heading west toward 231.
  • J.B. and Tracie leave right behind Merritt and daughter.
  • The security tape shows the white truck leaving the store just before the Mazda — J.B. and Tracie — left the store.
  • Merritt and daughter don't notice what happens to J.B. and Tracie after they leave the store.

Questions

1. Was the white truck already parked at the Big/Little Store when J.B. & Tracie and Marilyn Merritt & daughter arrived? Who was there first? Were J.B. and Tracie followed there by the white truck? Aren't these questions that could've been answered to some degree by Merritt and daughter?

2. What was the white truck doing at the Big/Little Store? The store was closed, no gas purchase was made, and no one was seen exiting the truck at any time. If the white truck has nothing to do with the murders, isn't it some coincidence that it sat there idling during the time J.B. & Tracie and Merritt & daughter were there talking, and then left at the same time as the other two vehicles?

3. Merritt and daughter left the store first, heading west. J.B. and Tracie were also heading west, so they would've been following right behind Merritt and daughter. When the white truck left (after Merritt and daughter but before J.B. and Tracie), which direction did it go? If the white truck was also traveling west, then we have:
  • VEHICLE #1: Merritt and Daughter, followed closely by
  • VEHICLE #2: The White Truck, followed closely by
  • VEHICLE #3: J.B. and Tracie
In your mind, if the white truck left the Big/Little Store and headed east, does this reduce the chances that the white truck had anything to do with the murders?

4. Clearly the white truck was at the Big/Little Store at the same time as Merritt & daughter and J.B. & Tracie. Surely Merritt and daughter must've mentioned this to LE. So why, then, has it never been reported that witnesses observed a white pickup truck parked at the gas pumps during this key time? MSM articles only reference the white pickup truck being spotted by the surveillance camera. LE has to rely on this partial view of the truck from inside the Big/Little Store instead of eyewitness testimony from outside the store. Why?

5. What made Merritt and daughter feel it was okay to leave J.B. and Tracie when the white truck was parked at the gas pumps? The suspicious white truck was a potential immediate threat to the girls and had every advantage compared to Tracie's mother on the other end of the phone as potential protector.

6. Were Marilyn Merritt and her daughter the original intended victims?

7. What does the surveillance photo tell us?

8. If the occupant(s) of the white truck is NOT responsible for the murders, why haven't they come forward? An obvious reason would be fear of being charged with a crime they did not commit, but knowing they would be cleared through DNA testing and print comparison, why not come forward? This would help LE rule out the white truck as a vehicle of interest and direct their energy toward the real killer(s).

9. Is it possible the occupant(s) of the white truck overheard Merritt giving J.B. directions, left the store going in a different direction than the other two vehicles, and caught up with/cut off J.B. and Tracie, perhaps as they were heading south on 123?

10. At what point did Merritt and daughter turn off/leave the route taken by J.B. and Tracie?

This answers my question about the white truck. SO it was there when they all were there.

"ok now let me explain- for those who saw the Haunting Evidence episode, John had drawn a map to the place he felt the actual murders had taken place. it was a place i'd never seen. they didn't tell where it was located. chase and i went looking for it the day after the broadcast. we were driving down herring av and i just glanced up and saw the chain across a clearing that entered the woods. it was at an angle and i'd never noticed it before. this is where john said the murders were committed. to the right is that "bottom" area that scared me- thats the creek. when you pull up into this clearing it is, although in the city limits, like being in the middle of nowhere."~quoted from website. Also a person who went to visit the memorial and get a feel for the area.

here's the link:

What get's me is when she mentions the "ice house" in the other forum, behind it there's "Jone's Pool"?
Which I can only imagine as a local swimming hole on a Mr. Jone's land?

I believe the poster at the link , and I are talking about the same creek on Herring St. It's really small, I remembered it only after I got home, so no pictures.

Wonder if any other locals or someone familiar with the case knows about Jones Pond? And the ice house being mentioned, could it be the one on Jones St.? I am not into psychics, but I really got a creepy feeling over there in that area. I was glad I had someone with me!

This whole area is more of a rural semi-rural ...so no night time construction around here. I have seen it in the bigger towns at times, but not here.

This is the former Big/Little store. I took this photo coming into town from Hwy 27 exactly as the girls would have if they had been lost and arrived in Ozark via 27. The store is exactly the same except for new paint and signage.

I found a picture of the original Big/Little store:

Yea, I kinda had to see past the "psychic" part of it. And look at it as a first person perspective. But I think she has a point. We all get that really eerie feeling in certain spots in the case. IMO it's just instinct.

Just thinking about why the girls may have stopped. They had been driving around for quite some time, in a place they didn't know---Wouldn't bodily functions have at some point forced them to pull over? The store they found was closed, and I'm guessing there isn't anywhere else to "go" in that area. Then, while pulled over, a vehicle pulls up behind them...And from here you can insert your own scenario of fake police cars (or at least the girls' belief that it was a cop that had pulled up beside them).

In that scenario, and not being a girl I'm asking the question honestly, would they have "gone" together or would one have more likely stayed with the car? And would there have been dew on the grass at that time of night?

Just a little info on the Reddy Ice factory on Jones Street near Depot Lane in Ozark:

Reddy Ice Website:
http://www.reddyice.com/maps/al-ozark.php*

Ozark Area Chamber of Commerce:
http://www.ozarkalchamber.com/home/...nessDetail/tabid/91/ItemId/430/Reddy-Ice.aspx

CorporationWiki (lists Manager and Secretary):
http://www.corporationwiki.com/Alabama/Ozark/reddy-ice-inc/57338657.aspx

*Several addresses are listed online as the location of the Reddy Ice factory, including addresses on both Jones Street and Depot Lane. The map on the Reddy Ice website is of some other location entirely.

I would love to find out if the Reddy Ice factory operated 24 hours a day, including on weekends, back in 1999. I also wonder if any employees of the factory were ever checked out.

I think the girls would be very disappointed with the way the special birthday night was going. I wonder if that caused them to do something uncharacteristic?

  • #229
Clearly the "oversize tires" OR "4 wheel drive" information DOES NOT come from the security photo released.

Where does that info come from, and "normally" if a truck has oversize tires it is ALSO 4 wheel drive, so that is just baffling.

The oversize/4X info indicates to me that the truck could have been offroading.

If the driver of the truck was offroading in the mud somewhere, and suggested to the girls to try it, then maybe they took up the offer, as a little something different for a birthday adventure, since their original plan had gone so wrong?

Locals, are there offroading/mudding trails in the vicinity of the store? Is it a past-time in that area, the way it is north of the border?

This is an excellent point. It has the simplicity of truth to it.

At the same time I wonder, though, how a killer happened upon them at this point in time when they would've been vulnerable. The key is that, in this scenario, the girls stop voluntarily. The killer has nothing to do with their stopping, nor the location they choose at which to stop. He has no control over the circumstances, the environment. Which makes it not very likely in my mind. To explain a little further:

If he'd already been following them, how did he know they'd pull over somewhere conducive to his plans? Did he just hope, or get lucky? It would've been out of his hands. It's more than likely, IMHO, that the girls would've just driven safely back to Dothan, never giving the killer an opportunity to strike.

As far as a complete coincidence, certainly the girls would've chosen a fairly remote spot to pull over if this was their reason for stopping, so the chances (especially at this time of night, in this very small town) of a car coming by during this brief window of time would've been slim. The chances of a car driven by a person looking to sexually assault and murder people is too slim, in my humble opinion.

I would definitely like to hear others' takes on this scenario.

This is very interesting.

Tracie Hawlett's step-father says that a news article by The Birmingham News misquoted him on several comments attributed to him. He also said that the newspaper told him that the news article was going to focus on the lives of his daughter and J.B. Beasley, who were both found murdered found murdered on Aug. 1, 1999

It isn't exactly clear as to which parts of the article Robert's is referring to as being inaccurate. He did say that some of the comments that were included in the article were of rumors he had heard or that he was assured that the comment he was making at the time would be off the record.

A news article by Robin DeMonia, a Birmingham News staff writer, includes new information in the case of the murder of the two Dothan teens. Among the new items are several quotes from Mike Roberts, Tracie Hawlett's step-father. Here are a few quotes from the article:

"It was muddy and almost out of gas, despite a fill-up the day before." (talking about the Mazda car the girls bodies were found in)

"Miss Hawlett's arm was scratched, her pants had briars, and the $95 New Balance tennis shoes she had bought the week before were covered in mud. First into the trunk, she had been shot once in the temple."

"Miss Beasley was dirty, too, and also had been shot once, apparently in the cheek, Roberts said"

"They also have one palm print from the trunk lid, Roberts said."

"One theory hangs the crime on a police officer or someone posing as an officer. Roberts has raised the possibility himself, saying he believes the girls would not have stopped for anything other than a blue light. In addition, Miss Beasley's window was halfway down, he said, and he's been told her license was on the car's console. "

The article was published to the world wide web, on the Alabama Live web site on January 20, 2000.

Thanks for your input and for asking that question.

That info comes from Chief Spivey according to the link you posted up thread and I think it might also answer the question as to if the two witnesses ever saw the truck that night. The witnesses might not have been able to tell the exact color but would have remembered the over sized tires.

That shows you what a fresh set of eyes can do.

The "possible grease stain" in the back of the Mazda is curious. Whatever came of it, after the release of Barrentine?

The possible grease stain that was found in the back seat of the Mazda 929, is trying to be matched to gloves that were found in the glove box of Barrentine's car

there was a grease stain in the back seat on the drivers side of the Mazda 929 belonging to J.B. Beasley, one of the victims in the case.

yes- people love to go "mud ridin' " here. There are some places to go just for that in thearea, but I couldn't tell you what, if any were here then. Most people just know someone that has property thay can do this on.

We have land and our kids friends love to come here when it's nice and muddy - and they bring friends!

As far as the girls needing to stop and use the bathroom. I can't see that. If they did that at the BP they stopped at, they should've been fine to get back home if they had not had anything to drink- liquid in general- not just alcohol. I remember when I was that age- I could hold it forever and no way was I stopping in the bushes! I don't remember any of us doing that back then.

  • #237
Just for reference, when discussing the mileage possibly driven... The 929 had a tank capacity of 18.5 gallons and optimal mileage was 19/24 mpg. With the type of driving the girls were doing, mileage was more likely 12-15 mpg. The 929 had a 6 cyl engine, thus the less-than-completely impressive mileage.

Dime Detective- I have a guess about the Clinton Ave address of Reddy Ice Co. I might be way off here, but it seems like there used to be a restuarant a long time ago- I'm talking about back in the 80s called The Ice House in that area. I wonder if this is the former location of Reddy Ice and they relocated from there, to the new plant on Jones Ave?

Realistically, you really have to wonder about the timeline.

If the girls left home at 10:00 pm, and curfew was 11:30 pm, that didn't really leave alot of time for a birthday party, did it?

How long was the driving distance from their home to the field where the party was, anyway?
