Oh my bad. I’m from the UK and not up with the lingo in the US. Sorry for any confusion

No worries. Its like this: The sheriff's department covers the county which is the larger area containing all the towns, any cities and rural areas. The Police Department is a city entity and they are responsible for everything within the city limits but not beyond. The county sheriff is sometimes called upon by city jurisdictions within the county to reinforce. I hope this makes sense.

You may know this. But just in case. :)

PD - police department. They have jurisdiction in the city limits.
Sheriff - they have jurisdiction in the county limits (including cities)
State police can pull your butt over anywhere in the state. :)

I wasn't here for the circus of them reporting Cupcake was found but what a terrible error to make for all the people hoping so hard she will be found. :(

Still trying to catch up with the threads and MSM reports, UGH!

Thanks a lot for that @Quill saves any future embarrassing posts from me.

Great thanks and is LE the same as PD?

Yeah sorry. So the reporters were Infact just receiving calls from LE.

In the UK we don’t have mass hysteria like this so it’s an eye-opener. Everything is very much hush hush
Yeah, this usually doesn't happen but I think there were so many people on the scene because of all the police presence and they were really hoping she had been found. Someone likely heard she had been found and reporters started reporting it before they had verified the information.
Imo

so before all the mayhem - the POI's - is it confirmed they are unknown to anyone in the family? Nothing released on the vehicle they towed yet, correct? and we don't even know if these two are in fact the kidnappers? I just went through and set up the media thread and I don't think we have this information confirmed - JMO.

So who has her - and why is a bounty hunter getting tips??? I would like to know this relationship too. MSM link posted in media thread regarding the bounty hunter and the tip.

In the US, in most states there are cities and counties. Cities are inside the counties. The cities have police departments (PD) and then the areas outside the cities that are in that county have Sheriff’s Departments, and there is one Sheriff and many deputies. Sort of like a police chief and many officers. This isn’t 100% the way it is everywhere in the US but in a majority of places. It gets confusing even for Americans.

Then Louisiana has Parishes instead of Counties and gets us all confused haha!!

I don’t know how things are in the UK so maybe it’s similar. But I thought I’d offer the info to be helpful. :)

Yeah I was wondering if this was a regular occurrence, seemed out there for a reporter to be receiving such calls. What a sad day for all involved, I just want her found.

Even though I’m local to Bham I am not from the US originally. When I first got here the whole sheriff, city PD, city jurisdiction, county and state jurisdiction, etc was very confusing. There is a lot of overlap too which makes it even more confusing. Some of that overlap is also redundant which can lead to even more confusion. Got it yet? :)

Y’all, this isn’t a Missing Persons Case. It’s a Three Ring Missing Person Circus.

Yes, here on WS we refer to the police, sheriff, etc. as LE. (Law Enforcement) - but we also have US Marshall, FBI and the Texas Rangers....

I've updated her media thread through this last page of posts that are MSM links. What an emotional rollercoaster to go back to the beginning of little Cupcake's kidnapping. I did not include links from pages 6 on until the page where it was absolutely confirmed by LE that she was still missing and the Amber Alert is still active. I'm heartsick ...again. JMO

Please note - anyone can update the media thread but you must provide a MSM link and only 10% of the article can be posted. Thanks
You must have the patience of Job. I appreciate your hard and consistent work. Thank you @oviedo for a sometimes overlooked effort.

Ah I see. No here in the UK it’s very much black and white. We have the Police (LE / PD) who take control but depending on the case it can be dealt with by detectives which we call CID. They are higher but we really only have one person at a time relaying information, it’s very much concealed for fear of jeopardising a case.

And to add to the confusion, some cities within the counties don’t have their own PD so the sheriff’s office covers their law enforcement needs. There are quite a few cities in Jefferson County, where Bham is located, that don’t have their own city police. Hope everyone has that straight now...sarcasm!

It is really the same way here. The sheriff's department should have only been on scene as reinforcement unless they were outside the city jurisdiction. One agency was in charge and I believe that should have been the BPD unless I am mistaken.

I really don’t, but we can leave it there. *jumps down an Alice and wonderland hole*

Yes. We call them under an umbrella term of Law Enforcement. If they get a badge and gun they're LE. :)

Are those cities or small towns, though? I live in a state with lots of rural counties with many tiny little towns. Many barely even have a stoplight so it makes sense for them to be under the jurisdiction of the county sheriff.

You just summarized all my last few questions after trying to catch up and sift through what happened and what didn't happen!

It's absolutely a three-ring-missing-person-circus!
