“Every single officer that’s on a search for this child wants to find that child. Not to be a hero or anything like that. They are putting themselves in the predicament that the parent’s are in right now,” said Jefferson. “What goes through your mind- because I’ve been on these types of calls... what goes through your mind is the fact that we as police officers, we wear the uniform, we have that hard shell on the outside but we are humans at the end of the day. A lot of them are parents. We’re thinking about our own children. We’re thinking about if this were my child, what would I want people to do?”

“There will be some tough questions (directed towards the family): Is there contention among family members? Could this child be the center of a custody battle? Could this be something related to a mother, father, aunt, or uncle or grandparent or whatever. They have to ask those hard questions. If the family endures that, they can continue their search in a different direction once they exclude the family members,” explained Jefferson.

In all honesty, all the video feeds I saw were from behind the yellow tape. I thought a lot of the info the reporters were getting from LE was via cell phone. I thought they did a pretty good job of containment. Unfortunately, no one can control what comes out of their mouths.

They were let into the secured area with LE. They were on the right and left side set up INSIDE the secured area. I wondered about it when I first saw it. Usually the press is inside, all are in the same area with a law enforcement officer ensuring they do not enter the actual crime area or near the family.

She could have been found deceased. Do we really want the media video the victim of the family under those conditions?

I worked with media for 40 years. Good and some very bad situations, never did I allow them unsupervised. Its for there protection.

Yeah I was wondering if this was a regular occurrence, seemed out there for a reporter to be receiving such calls. What a sad day for all involved, I just want her found.
I've never heard of LE calling a reporter, either. Maybe the Sheriff was asked by a reporter and then gave them the false information. It all happened so fast, maybe that's why it was reported before it was cleared up.

It is really the same way here. The sheriff's department should have only been on scene as reinforcement unless they were outside the city jurisdiction. One agency was in charge and I believe that should have been the BPD unless I am mistaken.

We have multi-jurisdictional involvement with this case because...the child went missing in the city of Bham. The two POI’s were picked up in the city of Center Point, which does not have its own police, so the sheriff had jurisdiction there. The sheriff also runs the jail even though the city of Bham has a jail for infractions like drunk driving, etc. PLUS, 2 different court jurisdictions depending on the crime regardless if it happened in or out of city limits. All very confusing especially those unfamiliar with the US.

I live in a small town outside Bham. We are inside one county but have a street address of a town that's in another county because our town is big enough to have a post office but not big enough to have its own mail routes. That town is north of me, but my phone number comes from the town south of me, neither of which are Tuscaloosa, which is the biggest city inside Tuscaloosa County.

All the little cities, towns, and communities in the greater Bham area are even more confusing!

And then add in volunteer EMT, firefighters, etc and we've got a circus with way more than three rings and twice as many clowns.

Are those cities or small towns, though? I live in a state with lots of rural counties with many tiny little towns. Many barely even have a stoplight so it makes sense for them to be under the jurisdiction of the county sheriff.
Right, if the population is great enough for it to be called a city, it has it's own PD. Usually. MOO.

I'm think a reporter overheard a deputy saying she was found and the reporter called it in to his coworker. JMO

How does that work for public school districts? We had some of that around here and it went to court due to school districts enforcing the residence requirements.

Also, again wondering which of these areas the suspects (POIs) resided int?

Center Point is actually a big city but only recently incorporated. They will eventually have their own police, I think, but they don’t even have their own city school system yet. There are however very small towns in Jefferson County that do have their own police departments. Some with only 2 or 3 full time officers.

eta: clarification: My zip code correlates with my city and public school districts. My zip code sometimes comes up with a connected larger metropolitan city when online shopping.
In my state:Federal overrides State. State overrides County. County overrides City.

so before all the mayhem - the POI's - is it confirmed they are unknown to anyone in the family? Nothing released on the vehicle they towed yet, correct? and we don't even know if these two are in fact the kidnappers? I just went through and set up the media thread and I don't think we have this information confirmed - JMO.

So who has her - and why is a bounty hunter getting tips??? I would like to know this relationship too. MSM link posted in media thread regarding the bounty hunter and the tip.
Chief Smith said in last night's presser that they haven't found any connection between the two POI's and the family. He has asked for the public's assistance in the form of tips and video; especially any taken at the party or apartment complex the night Cupcake was abducted. He also said that they are waiting on DNA testing from the vehicle. MOO

So you’re out past McCalla or something like that? There are tons of goofy instances of similar problems of which Tuscaloosa County is only one of them. Shelby County is another that intersects with Jefferson where even Birmingham has city limits within but the general area is covered by Shelby County sheriff. Craziness for sure.

Thank you - that's what I recalled but I wanted to re-establish a starting point again today. I can't shake the feeling that something is going on behind the scenes here - it was an awfully big turnout with LE today for that search - and awfully public too IMO. wonder why?

Thank god you can all just call 911 because this is so confusing!

School systems in central Alabama most definitely enforce residency. Most of the city run systems are superior to the county system so those cities with superior schools will not allow anyone outside of their city limits to enroll in their schools.

The POI’s resided in the city of Center Point under Jefferson County Sheriffs jurisdiction.
