I lived in Shelby County for awhile. Teeny tiny town and commuted daily to downtown Birmingham. I was there a couple of years and still didn't learn my way around all the different parts of Birmingham. Thank God for GPS bc ppl tossed around "center point" "mid-town" "five points" "riverchase" for meetings and I never knew if it would take five mins or 45 mins to get where ever we were going LOL

I know what you mean but my line of work took me all over central Alabama. I would probably be the best taxi driver in town because I don’t need my GPS. My friends that grew up here don’t know their way around as well as I do. I can get almost everywhere, including every location that’s been in the news about this case. I’ve already been to these locations numerous times. Not sure if it’s good or bad but I’ve been able to visualize all the locations and geography.

When I left earlier, I thought they found her?
Who was the kid in the green jacket? What was all the cheering?
Can I get a brief summary of this **** show today.....I simply can't catch up on 40 pages right now!
The crowd started cheering when they saw a child who looked like Cupcake.

The Jefferson County Sheriff (not to be confused with Birmington Police Chief Smith) was misinformed by one of his deputies that Cupcake had been found. The Sheriff passed that misinformation on to the news media.

Cupcake wasn't found. :( MOO

Still missing. Somebody jumped the gun....then a bunch of ugly words from us all, some tears and anger, a press conference, reward upped to 25,000, 20,000 of which comes from crimestoppers and poof! Now we are back to where we were this morning. Heavy Sign.

Sorry, I can’t read everything right now. I think the comments were carefully scripted as well. I think they were meant to appeal to a female.
Am I the only one who thought "holy ****, this is real life Criminal Minds" when listening to the chief's plea? It sounded like it was carefully scripted out and they used very specific and even odd-sounding phrases.... ie. "assuming" the perp is frightened and appealing to that. Safe passage is even a bit of an odd way to put it and he repeated it so many times.

That and then he point-blank said he was appealing to a "certain group." It kinda seems like they know a little bit about what situation they are looking at here...

But hey, maybe I've just watched one too many episodes since this all started. :)
. I want to know what’s up with the white female, are we still looking for a sequoia, and what about the other reports of a couple trying to lure other kids with candy? Was that just made up?

I’ll admit, I’m very cynical. When reports early on said the grandmother got a tip and called it in, my first thought was that it would certainly take the focus away from all the very troubling information circulating about Cupcakes family members. I’m still thinking this “tip” was a red herring. I hope not. I want to be wrong on this. MOO

Yup. Agreed

I don’t know...I would think that there are some situations where it may be helpful for a more polished outsider to step up to the mic, but I can also see where it might an advantage to have a local do the talking. Perhaps it depends on who really is the target of the message: the perp, someone in the community who may know something, or both.

You may be right but we’re 48+ hours in and there’s still no Cupcake. Maybe a more dynamic speaker who is a local LE would be better.

Money talks..

It really doesn't. The snitch culturebis very strong. Usually all a reward does is cause a bunch of false tips that have to be weeded through. By a bunch I mean thousands in a high profile case.
People reporting their exes. People calling in their dreams or visions. People making up stuff on the off chance that they are correct and can collect the reward. If any good tips come in, they get lost amongst the junk ones.

I can only think of a couple of cases where a reward has worked.

Don't forget, "I saw on Facebook somewhere..." MOO

Wow. I completely missed that. I kept seeing the yellow tape in the background on the 3 I kept switching between. I had to turn one of them off because the camera (with open mike) was behind the line with all the bystanders. You could hear every single thing they were saying (the cheers, “I see her pigtails,” there’s the grandmother). Just too invasive. 40 years - you must have the patience of a saint

They were just I side the secured area about 4 feet.

I noticed, because I worked with press for years. I was shocked they were in the secured area at all.

Its all about protecting the crime scene, protecting LE, witnesses and family.

MOO, someone heard something, heard the cheers, and well we know the rest....

Birmingham PD Chief may be a fabulous chief and person. I have no reason to believe that he isn’t. However, I do not think he is a good public speaker for a news conference at least. I thought his statement and answering of questions was flat and lifeless. Yes, I’m sure he’s exhausted, but this is about finding 3 year old Cupcake and he needs to have the FBI doing the pressers. They have experience in appealing to perps and can come across as strong, determined, and forceful.

Ditto, ditto, ditto....

I haven’t watched the presser yet but it doesn’t sound like anything new but your interpretations of what he said -and what he didn’t say- are interesting - I think they know more than they are saying - but then I thought that when LE had A press conference last summer in another missing case appealing to that one person IMO
