Yeah there is nothing warm or fuzzy about any of this. Nothing.

The only potentially warm and fuzzy thought is that she’s been passed off to a non violent woman who just wants a child and that this child is safe, warm and fed and will be found unharmed.

After the SM fiasco last night, I'm surprised we don't have anything new yet. Maybe we will find out more to go on this evening. MOO

I think that fiasco may have influenced a few of the responses at today's presser though. I think he may have been a bit more gentle with a couple of responses before... but today he was just blunt.

I think they are just as fed up as we are.

Human and Labor Trafficking the Topic of Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Federal Bureau of Investigation Annual Conference — FBI

The Homewood initiative took place July 11 with the department’s Vice and Narcotics Unit. Sgt. John Carr said multiple arrests were made at hotels on Lakeshore Parkway and Oxmoor Road. Nine women were arrested and five men. Authorities said the men were “Johns” or pimps. An Alabama law passed in 2016 prohibits media outlets from publishing the mugshots of anyone charged with prostitution without special permission from a judge therefore the mugshots of the females were not released.
14 arrested on prostitution charges in Homewood in FBI human trafficking operation

Thank you for these. Posting these over in the Human Trafficking Awareness Thread as well:

This is encouraging to me. I'm also an optimist. :)

Birmingham attorney offers to represent 3-year-old’s abductor for $1

We have quite a few leads we’re following up on…we’re doing everything we can to bring this child home,” Chief Smith says.
this worries me - i recall similar feelings during the Mollie T case - while she was missing and how they appealed. I hope this isn't going to go down a similar path - we've lost too many children on WS these past few months IMO.

Maybe they lawyered up and LE are just waiting to see if anything comes back on the car. Or they are looking for more evidence to try and charge them. In the meantime they are detained and will be charged with unrelated charges at the 48 hour mark. Just so they can hold them on something.
BBM

Unless, they're minor charge and they make bail.

I'm sorry, after the presser, not hopeful.

Given the attitude in the community? I would rather stay in jail if I were them!

Yes, but they are just one tip away. All they need is the right one. If they have "quite a few leads" to follow, it may be there somewhere. Keep the faith. MOO

This does NOT give me a warm fussy feeling....

Imho

I wouldn’t put much into the County being low on funds. The BPD is well financed and have an extremely robust police force. It’s a separate entity from the county. The county dist attorney is involved because this is a felony and not under the jurisdiction of the city court system. When you add in the county deputies, FBI, Federal Marshals and the BPD they have adequate resources to investigate. The biggest single problem is the community not trusting LE even though a child is involved. If you ever drive by one of these local housing communities they are a bee hive of activity in the evenings. People cooking, socializing, kids playing, etc. For the Chief to be pleading for info it’s MOO they’re canvassing has produced many people saying just enough but unwilling to point fingers. That’s why he said “he knows” people have video, cell phone video, information, etc. It would seem almost impossible for someone to swoop in and grab a child without WAY more witnesses.

That kind of thing can also hinder the investigation because they have to follow through with every lead, and if it turns out to be unrelated or untrue it just creates a lot of extra work for the them.

You would think that anyone with important information would go to the police first and not put it in SM, but that's not always the case.

Imo

That's precisely why I think the Chief appeared a bit annoyed today. Because it probably resulted in a ton of phone calls and tips. When it should have just been taken to LE and not the internet. Hopefully the family is also taking these things to LE so LE doesn't have to get them from social media.

Has LE gotten search warrants for the apartment of the couple detained? Did LE take cell phones? Are they able to do these investigative things with no charges being filed?

It would seem LE needs more than the SUV to check into this couple’s background.

$6K reward for info, arrest in Alabama 3-year-old’s abduction

Really behind... Noting:

12:30 p.m.
ADDITIONAL REWARDS OFFERED

...The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office is offering a $5,000 award, and an anonymous citizen is offering $1,000. The awards offered total $11,000, including Governor Kay Ivey’s $5,000 award, which was announced Monday.

We have quite a few leads we’re following up on…we’re doing everything we can to bring this child home,” Chief Smith says.

According to Chief Smith, officials believe Kamille may still be in the area. Police have not disclosed whether she was in the vehicle that was recovered.

[...]

In the video, which has been shared over 1,000 times, Guster offers his services to Kamille’s abuctor(s) for $1, in exchange for the child’s safe return.

“If you reach out to me…you bring me this child, pay me a dollar, I’m your lawyer at that point. I can’t tell people who you are…I won’t even look at your face. I just want this baby back,” Guster says.

With the 48 hour mark coming up in the next few hours, I think we’re about to get a measure of clarity here.

Three main options:

Release them without charges.

Hold one or both on unrelated charges.

Charge one or both with something related to this crime.

I’ll say it right now, if “meth” somehow pokes it’s way into this equation we are all in big trouble. Moo. Just saying this in advance. This is one word that we don’t want to hear here.

I liked how he said something along the lines of “Social Media is going to do what Social Media does” (don’t quote me please, paraphrasing :)), and that they do “monitor” SM but rely on “facts”.

Also the use of the word "rhetoric." moo
