Now I remember...

I don't remember another case where co-workers actually reported that they could not comment due HR...

LE/lawyer directions, yes... But HR... No...

I am sure it happens... But this just sounded a little off to me..

The information I want to see from the medical examiner is time of death.

This ^^^^^...

I really, really, really want to know the time of death, too!

It's very, very common. I've worked places where that is just general policy and if something does come up in the media, we were reminded by the PR people that employees are not to speak to the media.

Well Karen was still employed with them until her death.

With our not having the official time of death(TOD) per the ME I just wanted to narrow the window of time down as much as possible with the teeny amount of information that we do have.

Monday, July 22 8:00pm-
Hobby Lobby in Wildwood, Al closed .

Monday, July 22 About 8:30pm-
Karen Shahan closed the store that evening and as a manager of the flower dept likely completed any closing duties with her reportedly leaving the store at approx. 8:30pm

Tuesday, July 23 Before 10:00am-
Hobby Lobby opens for business at 10:00am and Karen Shahan was scheduled to work the opening shift that morning. This would have had her due to arrive shortly before 10am(but IMO as early as say, 9:00am solely dependant upon what exactly she had to do that particular morning in prepping for her floral dept to open for business at 10am)

**Other info/details that may help narrow down the window of time between Monday 8:30pm and Tuesday morning before 10:00am**
~We know there is time elapsed after Monday, 8:30pm when she left Hobby Lobby due to her having made the trip home from work(under 5mile distance btwn work and home).. <<It is due to the next detail below that we are able to establish her having safely made it home from work>>

~We know that Karen Shahan was found to have been dressed for bed when her body was found.. This indicates more elapsed time after she left the Hobby Lobby at 8:30pm, Monday, made the short trip home from work, and had the time to have come in from work and at the very least we know for certain change from her work clothes into her sleeping attire..

~The other detail has been reported from very early on and comes from more than one neighbor of the Shahan's..it is the neighbors all having referred to Karen being murdered Monday night.. Several of us remarked that this quite likely is information that the neighbors learned of in each being interviewed by investigators.

~ And then last, but certainly not least is the detail that IMO most points to possibly when Karen was murdered.. The neighbor's reporting hearing a loud noise coming from the Shahan residence about 10:45pm, Monday night.
------------------------------------------

As I said so, so very little information that we have to work with.. So, given the above window of time marked by 8:30pm Karen's last being seen alive when leaving Hobby Lobby..and then marked by the 10:00am open for business we know Karen was scheduled to work, therefor due to arrive at some point shortly before 10:00am..

In going with the murder being overnight Monday, IMO I find it easy to assume that we can safely cut out the post-dawn morning hours of Tuesday, July 23.. Also IMO I find it reasonable that Karen Shahan did NOT speed straight home, rush into her home, and go directly to her room and immediately change into her sleep attire..while I admit most anythings possible given we have so very little info, but again just in my own opinion I find it more reasonable that there was a lapse of a couple hours of time after Monday, 8:30pm when she left work, that would account for and include getting and/or eating a late dinner, bath or shower, and any number of other daily/nightly routine occurrences that Karen IMO most likely did upon arriving home, up to the point in time when she had actually gotten dressed in her sleep attire.

Taking into account one of the last slivers of info that we have, IMO is what narrows it down to what I strongly believe to be the closest to her time of death.. The neighbor's reporting of having heard a loud noise from the residence around 10:45pm..

With all of that said and noted I come to believe that its most likely between 10:30-11:30pm, Monday, July 22nd when Karen was killed..

All jmo, tho and please feel free to correct, edit, or add to any of the dates, times, or info in this post:)

And quite possibly if RS was perhaps staying in a hotel in Franklin, TN, an approximately 3 hr. drive from home, he would have had to leave between 7-7:30 pm to arrive back in Bham by approximately 10:30 pm. He and youngest son could have met at a restaurant for an early dinner and he might have retired to his hotel room for the evening before 7:00 pm with plans to leave very early the following morning for a visit with his other son in Ft. Campbell, KY which is another approximately 1 hour away.

He could have cleaned up at his home in Bham and been back on the road to his hotel room in Tn by 1:00-2:00 am and back there by 4:00-5:00 am...regrouped and headed out to KY around 6:00-8:00 am, arrived around 7-7:30 until around 9:00 am. We don't know if anyone from KS work tried to call him to check on why she hadn't made it into work per schedule.

I think I may have posted that HL opened at 10:00 am but on looking at the website, I believe it, in fact, opens M-Sat at 9:00 am so KS probably was scheduled to be back at work around 8:00-8:30 am if she was the opening manager which we don't know if that was the case.

This is all based on the possibility that RS was in Franklin, TN on Monday but that has not been reported. If he was in Ft. Campbell, Ky, you would have to assume all times would be an hour earlier...IOW, he would have have had to leave Ft. Campbell around 6-6:30 pm to arrive back in Bham by 10-10:30 pm on Monday evening...give or take about a half an hour because most of the trip is interstate and speed limits are 70mph but you can easily drive 80mph in AL and not fear being stopped for speeding.

What I did read in a posting below one of the articles was someone from the church saying that everyone knew that he had been out of town for a few days. I have not heard this so this is pure rumor based on something I read.

This is all JMO and pure speculation on my part. Any or none of it may have happened. Just running a possible scenario through my head.

Hobby Lobby hours are 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. Other than the correction in store hours I am inclined to agree that the murder took place close to 11 pm.

I must have missed or didn't notice the reports that Mrs. Shahan was dressed for bed.

I agree... The noise heard by the neighbor must have been valid enough to present in reportings ...

and... It does fit in with the time line...

She was found in night clothing... Forget the link, though...

  • #414
BinB said the person/s he talked with at Hobby Lobby said she was found in a nightgown.

If the time of death was established before midnight it might lead cops to kind of rule out burglar, especially if she had the TV on and was sleeping or relaxing on the couch. I know they say nothing is ruled out, but they can probably tell if it seems like someone could know her habits and schedule.

Two things:

First:I think if the night clothing is true, she did not interrupt a burglary in progress.

Second: The title of this thread is misleading. It has never been confirmed that the husband was out of town when the slaying took place. It has only been confirmed that he was out of town when her body was discovered. Perhaps that should be changed????

Yes, Mary.....that's the buzz I heard too and in addition, it has been repeated on SM that she was found on the family couch. But since it's SM, consider it rumor.
And your second point is well taken and has been mentioned by another poster on this thread as well. I agree with the both of you; it should be changed.

What is SM, please?

Thanks,

Salem

Her friends commenting on their social media pages.
But they are being very outspoken about that and perhaps it is now in the local news.
