AL - Karen Shahan, 53, murdered, Homewood, 23 July 2013 #2

  • #361
Good grief. I just now noticed there were two threads for Karen.

I did not realize there was a timeline/media/no discussion thread for the case and just posted there. I wondered why there were only two pages of posts. And I have been posting in her thread for a while now.

Sorry about that.

Was that Pastor Matt Baker from Waco, Texas? If so, he almost got away with killing his wife, Kari. LE quickly ruled her death a suicide. Her family had to really fight for her.

http://abcnews.go.com/2020/texas-pastor-matt-baker-convicted-wifes-2006-murder/story?id=11092046

No - it was Bill Guthrie. I think it was in 1999. Same thing, though - daughters fought to have LE look closer at what had been ruled a suicide. He put massive amounts of sleeping pills in his wife's chocolate milk then went to church for his "daily prayers." He had been having a long-term affair which had actually resulted in termination from his previous post. They were both married.

Guess we just never know about people and what they're doing behind closed doors.

Thank you. I had not heard of him, Googled him, died in 2011.

When I posted about Matt Baker I could not remember his name so Googled "pastor murders wife" and was sickened to find that it is not so uncommon.

Interesting... I viewed the video in the media thread (last post) and it was reported that the church terminated Shahan's employment... While a form was presented on the screen...

Did any of you Sleuthers get a chance to view that form? It went too quickly for me...

Actually you were both right, I saw both murders re-enacted on the ID channel. The one with Bill Guthrie was on last night.

I can't think of why people think they can commit murder and get away with it. smh

RS is no different than any of the rest of the murder's whom I watched on trial last year.

Even a cop can't commit the perfect murder!

I'm not sure what form you are talking about, but I too question the fact if he indeed was terminated or was his last day to work at the church on December 31st? I'm puzzled about that information. Can we find out?

There was a quick pic of a typed paper/form...

I went back and froze the frame... But it was still unintelligible to me...

I thought it may have had something to do with the ending of employment of RS... But I couldn't tell..

Do we know for sure the length of both of Shahan’s 2012 mission trips? I think someone said that they are usually only for a few weeks due to Baptist non-registration in Kazakhstan. But Shahan's LinkedIn profile says that he spent a full year in Kazakhstan during the school year of 2012/2013. Other sources suggest he was away Sep 2012 - May 2013.

If that is the case, he returned just two months before Karen’s murder.

And he may have had time to develop an overseas relationship that later warranted the sending of many emails, and obtaining as much money as he could for their future plans. The Shahan's life insurance and personal savings were meagre in 2010 (bankruptcy), but that financial picture could have changed somewhat by 2013.

Shahan’s online biography says he spent the 2012-2013 school year as a visiting professor at the Bible Institute in Almaty, Kazakhstan

I am quoting my own post (sorry) to share that someone way more tech savvy than I was able to make the paper/form more visibly clear... And it was an announcement by RS that he was to embark on a mission abroad...

But a 'visiting professor' may only have two to three lectures in person, conduct video conferences- it can mean many, many things. In other words, this does not necessarily mean he was physically present for sixteen consecutive weeks.

Does anyone know the age of Shahan's boyfriend? (Shahan was involved in children's ministry.)

If his boyfriend is young, there may be many kids in Birmingham that need counseling. The DA should start looking for these children to testify.

I don't know how bad his teeth were but my daughters was cheap $750. While my other children's have been $4,500.
The photo showing the braces on his teeth looks to be older.
Wonder where he is living under surveillance? With his mother?

It IS interesting that RS's boyfriend has not been named or ID'd....

I wonder if LE found any "interesting" sites on RS's computer?

LOL!
That older picture was more than likely taken back in 1985 when I was working with him. That was the Richard Shahan I knew. Ya'll are too funny!

I do have a question. On this board, I have seen a picture of his interpreter but I can't find it. If any of you would be so kind as to link it again, I would appreciate it. I'm just wondering if that picture was an older picture...of a person that I knew...but it wasn't the interpreter!!!

Also, does anyone know if Karen went to the 2012-2013 mission trip with Richard...or did she stay behind back in Homewood?? Inquiring minds want to know. :banghead:

We don't sleuth people who are not involved in the crime. Thanks
