GUILTY AL - Savannah Hardin, 9, forced to run til she died, Etowah Co., 17 Feb 2012

What a witch.....

Alabama grandmother who made 'bone-thin' 9-year-old girl run for three hours until she collapsed and died is found guilty of her murder and now faces the death penalty

Joyce Haydin Garrad, 49, was convicted for the 2012 of Savannah Hardin

Court heard she made the youngster carry wood for three hours

Savannah had a seizure and died three days later in hospital

Garrard admitted making the girl run, but said it was to train for school

A surveillance video caught the grandmother saying she would run the girl and teach her a lesson

911 operator said she 'asked for a smoke' while girl was unconscious

I am late coming to this trial and Thank you to all that have kept us up to date on this trial. What a terribly sad case. It almost sounds like Savannah was water boarded and forced to run. She had to have consumed monumental amounts of water to become that hyponatremic. Her temp was low 90's in the ER. OMG. I really hope the hospital didn't drop the ball...

Garrard sounds like a narcissist, which I am sure did not play well to the jury. In the pics of Garrard, she looks way older than 53. I am surprised in a way that the jury found her Guilty of Capital Murder, but then not surprised as her lies and indifference made her look REALLY bad. I really thought the jury would come back with Felony Murder or Manslaughter, but Alabama juries don't seem to play.

I wonder if the Stepmom will be offered a plea deal. From the sounds of it, Garrard seems like a Monster that could make your life a living hell. I bet she was extremely abusive to her step daughter, who may have been afraid to go against her MIL by sticking up for Savannah. Savannah's father does not seem to be a peach either.

I feel terribly bad for Heather Walker. What she has endured at the hands of this family is reprehensible. No mother should have to go through what she has gone through as her life has been a living hell. I am so glad that in the end, Savannah had her there by her bedside, and Heather could take solace in those final moments. OMG. That brings tears to my eyes. I hope Heather has a strong support system and knows that she did everything she could within her power and knowledge base to get her daughter back. It is in cases like this that I wish there were pro bono attorneys to help mothers like Heather. IMO

I'm so relieved the jury got it and found her guilty. JH is next. And if I were Heather Walker, I'd file a wrongful death civil suit against Robert Hardin for moving back to Alabama and taking Savannah to live with this old battle axe & step mom without telling her. Sue him for everything he's worth!

RIP Savannah. Your life mattered.

YAY!! I am so glad she is guilty. Please please make sure she never ever gets out.

The other person I feel extremely bad for is the mother of the child who told Garrard about the candy bars. From what I read, that mom was so concerned she called back to say it was not a big deal in fear that something bad might happen to Savannah. Sounds like people were afraid of Garrard and her nastiness and they avoided confrontation with her.

Jessica Hardin seemed to follow that path too. I hope her DT will talk about DV and that it is not just between spouses or significant others. Do you all think Robert Hardin will be called to testify in her trial?

I just asked DH about the seemingly conflicting testimony between the ME and the pathologist for the Defense. I got my physiology lesson for the day. I was confused about the brain swelling and dehydration parts, the core temp being so low, and the treatment rendered.

From what I gathered, Savannah became dehydrated from running for an extended period of time without electrolyte replacement like Gatorade. Her kidneys shut down, along with the drop in Sodium, causing her brain to swell. Her hypothalamus, which regulates body temperature quit working, causing her core body temp to drop. The seizures were a result of the brain swelling. He highly doubted she was alert and most likely was obtunded. The medics probably started an IV of .9% Normal Saline and intubated her to protect her airway (provided Garrard didn't interefere with that too). An amp of Dextrose 50 (D50) may have been given.

Once in the ER, they probably put warming blankets on her and got a CT scan along with the lab work. Once the labs came back, they treated her with the 3% Saline IV. All this now sounds like the ER did things appropriately, based on the history they were given (despite the lies) if I am thinking correctly. This is conjecture on my part, based on the info gleaned from the articles you all kindly posted.

I am now wondering how long Savannah was seizing before Garrard had Jessica call 911. Savannah obviously had gone into multi organ failure, resulting in her death. The magnitude of the cruelty has just hit me. OMG.

May Savannah RIP. Prayers to all that lived her.

IMO

Hi Zuri,Yes, so terribly cruel and horrific. The killer gramma gave several different versions of her story--so kinda like Casey Anthony, some of us feel that in the many different stories, there probably is truth. One of the versions had Savannah going inside "to take a bowel movement". Some of us think that (like you said) everything was shutting down which caused her to lose control of her bowels etc. We think that's why her pants were off and she was so wet. Killer gramma tried to clean her up. So, I think Savannah was in bad shape for quite a while before killer gramma had step mom call 911.

the best she can hope for is LWOP.......the worst is death.......the jury will make a recommendation to the judge who will proclaim the final decision........

Granny will be hanging with other murderers such as Betty Wilson and Amy Bishop.

Oh wow, definitely the outcome I was hoping for here but actually not the one I expected!!

SO SO glad sweet Savannah now has justice, now lets see about this step mother aswell.

I have some conflicting thoughts on the father...on one hand he has lost his daughter by his mothers hand which must be a truly horrendous thing to live with... but then surely he must of had some inklings of what this woman was like and he still left his children with her...

I was so impressed with our southern justice last night in Alabama, with a swift and correct sentence. This jury is hand downs the best I've seen in a long time and it's just unfortunate Caylee's and many other killers didn't receive this type of justice. Wish I could go to AL and support Heather in the next trial with step mom. RIP Savannah.

I couldn't follow this case closely because it literally made me sick. I heard about it on NG and couldn't believe how sadistic her grandmother and step mom were. It just breaks my heart to think of what this beautiful child's life and excruciating death were like. I'm so glad the grandma was found guilty. I pray she receives the DP as does the stepmother. Actually, I think they should be forced to run just like they made Savannah do until their deaths.

OMG Zuri, Thanks so very much for relaying your dear hubby's physiology lesson. As Shelby said, we had speculated that Savannah's little body was already shutting down when she was in the yard. It's helps to have someone with medical knowledge to explain the process of how this happened. I wonder how the throw was also wet? It sounds to me like JG may have hosed her down in the yard, perhaps in and attempt to revive her or clean her up, JMO. I was floored when the prosecutor showed her Savannh's pants that she made the comment 'they probably smell uriny'. (paraphrased)I thought Wth kind of response is that? Anyway, being curious, I checked the weather for Feb 17, 2012 and it appears it was a nice Feb day with a high of 66 degrees. Sounds like it was a nice afternoon to be outside for everyone, except for poor Savannah. :(

I haven't heard anything about RH except that he lives overseas and JG said she hasn't spoken to him in 'quite a while' and he never showed at any of the custody hearings with Heather. I wish one of our verified legal experts would chime in here. I am curious if Heather has grounds for a civil suit against him.
If so, he may never come back to the US. Who knows?

MOO

Hello kato969. I was also conflicted about the father at first, but when I read the daily beast exclusive interview with Savannah's bio mother the other day I gained a whole new perspective of him.

Jury convicts grandmother of capital murder in child's death

Joyce Hardin Garrard faces a penalty of death or life without parole for the February 2012 death of Savannah Hardin.

Garrard showed no reaction when the verdict was read, but she hugged her three attorneys before being led out of court by deputies. She glared toward the audience as she walked out silently.

FINALLY!! savannah's story made the headlines in USA TODAY........i hope the whole world sits up and takes notice that juries are tired of children being killed

her own grandmother for god's sake :furious: omg

I hope the audience glared right back at the old b****.

I have a lot of anger at Savannah's father. It is patently clear that he simply used his own daughter to punish his ex, Heather. He had no wish to actually raise her or be her father, he simply used her and warehoused her with his 🤬🤬🤬 mother to spite his ex wife. He couldn't even muster the energy to feign outrage at his mother for killing that precious child he claimed to be protecting from her big bad bio mom. Couldn't even be bothered to show up at trial, either to support justice for his child or support his "wrongly" accused mother. What piece of work.

What a Monster!!! So Glad Justice was served here and...SO quickly!!! I Hope she gets the Max sentence!
Poor little girl. = ( My youngest child is 9. Can't imagine this horrific crime as I look at my girl!!
God Bless Little Savannah~ RIP

I would give the old bag the DP. The poor little girl had no choice but to be tortured. Alabama is a DP state.
A little girl died a terrible death because of that old bag and hag murderer.
