Alabama - Coronavirus COVID-19

Hurricane season starts June 1. That’s nothing new for those who live along the Gulf Coast, but what is new this year is the fact hurricane season will happen during the coronavirus pandemic. Evelina Burnett of Mississippi Public Broadcasting, Tegan Wendland of WWNO in New Orleans and WBHM’s Andrew Yeager described how officials in their respective states are preparing.

Challenges for Emergency Responders

  • Alabama’s Emergency Management Agency director said they’d normally operate with 125 people in a command center. Instead, they’re figuring out how to best communicate with people working remotely
  • Officials in Louisiana held an exercise with the National Weather Service this week to identify weaknesses. They’re hoping any major storms will come later in the season when presumably the pandemic will have waned somewhat.

People are not being careful here. It's pretty much business as usual. Last night we traveled I-65 from Montgomery to Nashville. We have to attend the the funeral of a close family member. I'll admit I'm worried. We made as few stops as possible. I didn't see the first person wearing a mask.

I've seen more people wearing masks this week than last week in my area south of Birmingham.
During the first week of June I was in Panama City Beach Florida for six days, I saw only three people wearing masks the whole time I was there, it was like covid19 had never happened!

Alabama sees record 40 deaths, another 1,673 COVID-19 cases Tuesday

“MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Alabama hit a grim milestone Tuesday with 40 COVID-19 deaths, a record for the most in a single day. The state now reports 1,136 COVID-19 deaths with 28 more cases that are probable.

Alabama also added 1,673 new cases, bringing the total to almost 56,500. The state has more than doubled the number of cases of the respiratory illness over the last month and the last two weeks have brought more than 17,000 of those, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.”

“Williamson has warned the healthcare system cannot support the sustained increase of COVID-19 patients for long.”

"I do think we are beginning now to see the effect of the 4th of July on cases, so I'm not at all surprised to see those number continue to rise over the next several days," says Williamson.

On the other hand, he says he's not sure if we're yet seeing the effect of the 4th of July on hospitalizations, and says those are likely to rise this week or next week.

His biggest concern is the spike in cases and hospitalizations with school around the corner.

“As we approach the gathering of children in August, in k12 and in our colleges, I think we set ourselves up for what could be a potential disaster,” he says.“

The Governor finally told everyone to wear a mask, but it was a bit late if you ask me. Moo.

Former Alabama senator dies of Covid at age 78, and in his last words warns, 'We messed up'

“We let our guards down. Please tell everybody to be careful. This is real, and if you get diagnosed, get help immediately,” former Sen. Larry Dixon said.

A former Alabama state senator died of Covid-19 last week at age 78, officials said.

Former Sen. Larry Dixon, a Republican who also served as the executive director of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners, died from Covid-19 on Dec. 4, the board said in a statement on Friday.

Dr. David Thrasher, a close friend of Dixon and a pulmonologist in Montgomery, told NBC News that Dixon's wife, Gaynell Dixon, told Thrasher that his last words to her were a prescient warning to the people of Alabama...

Its getting bad here. People as a whole are not even trying to be careful. Cities are having public Christmas events, sports are going on as usual. I’m waiting for it to hit hard in the next few weeks.

Three out of our family of four have covid 19. My youngest daughter won't be going back to school until next year. If she had tested positive, she could go back in 10 days but because of contact with us she has to quarantine for 14 days. They get out of school for the holidays on the 18th.
I'm ready to feel healthy again and for this to be over.
