I haven't heard that phrase before.. what does she mean?

I think of them differently. Swamps are more water, marshes are floody-y areas? You notice that the larger bodies of water on Sauvie are named 'lakes'. To me that implies deeper and more permanent than a swamp.

Wow, that's one of those topics where you could get lost in wikipedia nerdiness.

Ha PDX...all my sis said was "Swamp"...to me is a low body or water...not a lake...but heck, she could have been on too much caffiene driving from Portland to Memphis...

You are right about the houseboats. They are secured and are more correctly referred to as "floating homes." If they get loose, and they sometimes do if we have unusual flooding, it is a big problem. No plumbing, no water, no electricity. They are really not boats at all.

Now wasn't there a fire up there just a few weeks ago in regards to the location of the houseboats.Don't get me wrong...Portland may have houseboats everywhere...but was this Sauvie Island where the houseboats burned ???

Grandmaj..if you are talking about me, this was no rumor..it was on national news here...can I provide a link...not unless I can go to ABC,CBS,NBC,MSNB,HLN,FOX...if it didn't happen...someone tell me...because when it was broadcast it concerned my sis who was here visiting me and worried about her friend...truthfully, how the heck would I know this...I'm 2,000 miles plus away...

Okie Dokie Grandmaj..not sure what the heck you are talking about...but this report was not a eye witness report...it showed the boats burning on the big ole TV amist the color crayons my grandson had made on the screen..he thought it was paper.......and it was on national news...so be it....confirmed info...that's what I'm talking about! ThankYou!

Yeah, I was really fixated on that in the beginning and now it seems we are leading back to a close-in search, doesn't it? This makes SO much more sense to me *if* someone had pre-scouted the area. Why? It takes SO long to get around the island.. if I was short on time, going to the area you suggest makes more sense.. you don't waste all the time over the bridge & on the slow island road. IF those dirt roads are private enough and safe to go down, that area always made sense to me.

On our adventure, free and I tried to go on one of them, but there was a private residence with a man outside and it was clear that his was a private road.. but that was north from your pin.
I think cyclemama may have explored down that dirt road, back in the spring.

The way kgw says (multiple) bodies of water to search.. coupled with the earlier ground searches this fall, I expect they are more in the interior. We'll see when the news is on in a few.

Thanks for all the "leg work" you do for all of us, also PDX. I had also just been zooming in on the map near the pin on the west bank across from Sauvie Island. There are numerous places to drive to the edge and push something out into the water. In fact, a couple of the areas look like boat docks.

I don't know how much traffic--hikers, businesses, homes, etc.--are in the area, but it looks much easier to me, too, than driving across the bridge, etc.

apparently, there are many houseboat fires in portland lol. My earlier link was an old fire, so I deleted it. Here's the Nov. 2010 fire location, by the airpor??? Why would you want a houseboat by the airport, but I digress

Where are the bridges to get onto the island? I know this has been posted before, but I can't even see it on Google. (LOL--If I make it small enough to see, I can't find the bridge...When the map is large, I can't see the bridge!)

There is only one bridge on and off the island. I did a map from Sheltered Nook to the Bridge for you. Hopefully you can see it this morning!

On local news, the reporter said they just saw boats w/divers going down the boat ramp at the end of NW Ferry Rd..

It's "sounding" via the reporting that they are searching many areas of water.. Which would make sense to me as a lot of places I saw them searching in early October were also near larger bodies of water..

Just remember, they always can be searching more areas than you see on the news...
I cannot stress that enough from seeing in person areas they have searched vs areas they show on the news..

They, for obvious reasons (the news) cannot be at or find every search location.. =)

Makes more sense to me too PDX. Unfortunately though, if the Channel is where someone would have taken Kyron, I fear he is long gone. Didn't we talk about how fast the channel moves earlier in this case? Have to go back and reread.

Most of waterways don't freeze over here. We get one or two snow storms but it usually doesn't stick around long. (except for two years ago when we were all trapped in our houses for a week straight...LOL) I think with the dry suits the divers use, they can go all year round. Maybe a SAR expert can weigh in on this one.

LOL, I was going to say that waterways in that area don't freeze over, but....!!!

Yes, the gear is really the main limitation for divers. Anyone that is a SAR diver up there is going to be prepared for cold water and have the appropriate suits for it, as the water up that way is ALWAYS chilly!

ETA- Bringing over info from other thread. I am not a SAR diver (I only like diving in warm water), but have a close friend who is and have worked with SAR divers several times.

Thanks for answering! So in your opinion (or any other SAR expert here) would they send out divers in these conditions just to be thorough? Or would there need to be a pretty valid reason or tip to send them out there in freezing water temps. Pure speculation, I know.....:angel:
